CDWDS changes in November?

Rorate picked up from Paolo Rodari of Palazzo Apostolico an article stating that, in November, His Eminence Francis Card. Arinze will be replaced as Prefect of the CDWDS by H.E.Antonio Card. Cañizares Llovera, Archbp. of Toledo.

It seems reasonable to assume that such a rare November change would revolve around the fact that Card. Arinze will celebrate his 50th Jubille as a priest on 23 November.  Last week Card. Arinze told me that on that day he will celebrate a solemn Mass at San Clemente Cathedral in Velletri (His Eminence is the Cardinal Bishop of Velletri Segni).

I have received a zillion e-mails about this issue of Card. Arinze and Card. Cañizares Llovera, but I think I must simply support the opinion expressed on Rorate, which is reasonable, insofar as the timing is concerned. I am not so certain that Card. Cañizares will be the new Prefect.

Just a hunch? Or are you going on something more definite?

  2. Chironomo says:

I have seen this possibility mentioned in a variety of places. Why the feeling that it might not be so?

  3. Ron says:

Can I ask the significance of this change? What would it mean? I know Card. Arinze but what is Card. Llovera like?

    Pax Christi tecum.

First we have Archbishop Ranjith apparently not getting the job and now Cardinal Llovera. I had rather hoped that Cardinal Llovara would get the CDW and Archbishop Ranjith the PCFD (with a red hat). It is cruel and unusual punishhment for you to taunt us with such suspense so far from the event. Have you heard any other name? A good one? Surely you can tell us that much without necessaarily revealing who the person is.

Who know what’s the mix is as to whom gets what and why. In a way, I think a lot of this smacks of cronyism anyway. My opinion though, and we’re not there really to know. I just hope Ranjith gets a position to further along Summorum Pontificum.

To anyone who would like to read my fuller article on this, here is the link. All I can say is thank God for WDPTRS, and I am happy they got this first!

All I can say is the atmosphere in Sydney at the moment is absolutely electric, and we all have the sense that we are on the cusp of something extraordinary.

What has been so remarkable is the wonderful sense of charity that is prevailing everwhere. Even in this state of the art media facility in Darling Harbour in Sydney, the audio of one Italian TV network was in disarray. A rival station came to their aid without any problem.

Wouldn’t it be good if people were like this, all times and everywhere. That is the message of World Youth Day, and I ask your continued prayers for the Holy Spirit to come down upon us here.

Sorry I stuffed up there, I am doing this in a media room with lots of journalists, and I am geting ready to go to Cardinal Pell’s opening Mass this afternoon. I will pray for all WDPTRS readers in Barangaroo.

  8. Victoria says:

I watched the Mass at Sydney and the commentary was cringe making. I think that one of the men was a priest; they should have got a couple of practising Catholics. The explanation of the Mass in general, the Consecration and Holy Communion was embarassing.

  9. Padre Steve says:

I have always enjoyed listening to Cardinal Arinze and I hope he can stay on longer. He is a great blessing to the Church!

  10. EJ says:

Sorry too for veering offtopic, I don’t mean any disrespect, but I can’t help thanking Andrew for his comment – thanks for that and God bless as you are privileged to attend WYD! Your description of the electrified atmosphere and also of that sense of charity which prevails were what was I also experienced in Toronto and Cologne too, and it’s not just the pilgrims that are inspired and deeply moved and changed by the experience, but especially the locals, you will enounter very grateful people randomly coming up to you to welcome you or thank you for being there. God bless you!

  11. Jacob says:

For those of you on the ground in Sydney, did Cardinal Pell go forward with his proposed renovation of his cathedral? Are the choir stalls placed making the EF next to impossible or was the design modified?

  12. Louis E. says:

Cardinal Canizares Llovera is one of the more conservative voices in the Spanish hierarchy, and close to the ICKSP.Nicknamed “The Little Ratzinger” by some,he has been a member of the CDF since 1996.Translated from Granada to the primatial see of Toledo in 2002,he was made a cardinal in Pope Benedict’s first consistory in 2006 (at the 2005 conclave Toledo was represented by his predecessor,Cardinal Alvarez Martinez, then months short of 80).

It may be worth wondering who would replace him in Toledo as the Spanish primates are reliably made cardinals.

As for Cardinal Arinze,I note that he is one of the dwindling number of prelates consecrated prior to the 1968 Pontifical not recognized by some more-Catholic-than-the-Pope traditionalists,I wonder if he would be called upon to do consecrations on those willing to be reconciled.

  13. RPTolan says:

Hmmm, Arinze could get his 50th; Cardinal Canizares Llovera could consecrate Toledo to the Sacred Heart and later become the new Prelate for CDW; and our Lord could still pull off an Advent return of SSPX. Personally, I’d Like to see Archbishop Ranjith cover the globe with Teeth aqs the President of Ecclesia Dei.

Still not sure why the nay-saying on Cardinal Canizares Llovera. He got an early nod, with no reason to look back nor to stop him in his tracks.

If we all pray, maybe we could add some of the English and Saint Cardinal Newman as well!
