One can admire the man for his chess genius. However otherwise he was disturbed and believed/said some terrible things. Very, very anti Semitic and anti American.

  2. B: Then you should pray and do penance for him.

  3. Dan Millette says:

Is the other Bobby a certain number 4 from the Bruins?

  4. Irish Timothy says:

Well then Father the other one was to be my hero too: Bobby Orr! Perfect

And I will pray for Bobby Fischer today.

  5. Bobby Orr… yes indeed. What an amazing player in his day.

Yes, we should pray for Bobby Fischer. Here is an article that tells us he had a Catholic funeral.

  7. Tantum Ergo says:

Bobby Fischer turned the chess world when he defeated Boris Spassky in 1972. I remember that chess sets were very commonly sold in department stores, often with a large display. What this crotchety old curmudgeon misses the most is the beautiful “descriptive notation” …
“P-QB4,” (Pawn to Queen’s Bishop 4) instead of the cold “C4” we endure today.
    Now get off my lawn!

    [Good line!]

  8. Venerator Sti Lot says:

    Tantum Ergo,

You make me think of that passage in Evelyn Waugh’s Black Mischief where someone in the British legation is playing long-distance chess, and the spying French legation folk think it is a new code.

  9. Tantum Ergo says:

    Venerator Sti Lot,
Many a chess game I’ve played through the mail. It was exciting to go to the mailbox and find that postcard with the move made the week before. A single game could take a year or more, sometimes even longer if a spying legation (prob-ly Yankees) were trying to fig-ger out what my last move “really” meant.

  10. Rob83 says:

In my younger days, I think I had a chess tutorial set connected in some way to Fischer. The chess book in the house was an old copy of one of Capablanca’s books, which used descriptive notation.

One of his parents, his mother, was a Jew, and many think his real father also was.

When Fischer played Boris Spassky in 1972, Sec of State Kissinger called to encourage him. In 1992 his plans to play Spassky in Yugoslavia was forbidden by Bush41Co. Fischer’s went ahead anyway and became persona non grata. Thus his anti-American attitude

  12. Suburbanbanshee says:

Saints in Heaven do not need our prayers.

    We pray for sinners.

    Suburbanbanshee,

I don’t understand the relevance of your comment to the topic.
