Thank you for this undertaking – which I would have done well to say already with the first installment – and for this second gazette! It was especially interesting to hear of – and from – Bishop Robert Barron and your sense of this writing of his on ‘the Synod’. I do not know much of Word on Fire, but am enjoying the new book, Tolkien’s Faith: A Spiritual Biography by Dr. Holly Ordway which they have published.

Very interesting, I greatly enjoyed listening. Regarding the Synod, one thing that Bishop Barren could make more explicit is that those of us who have families have a constant and on-going duty to evangelize our children and grandchildren and parents also a duty to constantly encourage one another (evangelize each other). It seems the higher one goes up the ecclesiastical chain, the more the domestic church has been entirely forgotten. This is in my mind is a serious flaw, since I have been greatly affected by the piety of those serious Christians with whom I used to interact with in my work and leisure. I like to think that the faith of my children had a great effect on a friend of theirs who went from leading a promiscuous life to becoming a Catholic.
Finally, most poverty, at least in the USA, would be eliminated if single mothers were married to father of their the children. That is, a more Christian society in the sense that the citizens act like Christians should, would have a bigger effect on social problems than the Church’s anti-poverty programs. Just as good theology leads to better pastoral care, evangelizing the world reduces the social problems that are caused by sinful behavior.

Maybe a more relevant title should have been given to the synod: “Slouching toward Gomorrah”.*

    * Within a big thank you to the late Robert Bork for appropriating the title of one of his books.

I am enjoying these programs. Not too long and not too short. Eclectic subject matter.

Nice of you to mention the Ham radio topic again. I thought your enthusiasm had waned.

And I have a key fob and push-to-start ignition. I keep my fob inside an rfi blocking pouch when inside my residence
