Is this a joke?

This… given the topic, one is forced to ask, “Is this a joke?”

Notice anything?

There is at least one person in there who is not funny. And two whose inclusion is appalling. (Not mutually exclusive.)

The must be some confusion about “James Martin”, which doesn’t include “SJ”. There is a chap in the UK who has a Saturday morning program, named James Martin. However, this invitee is listed as American.

Maybe some one can explain this.

This is scandalous. Given whom he has refused to meet with in the past, it is also infuriating. He’s turned the Pontificate into a joke for sure.

  2. colorado says:

The inclusion of Karen Johnson (aka Whoopie) is appalling. There is a much larger list of comedians from around the world here:

Part of living in the 21st century is accepting that some sort of Erasmian satire is playing out in the background, and you have to do your best not to get involved.

  4. Chrysologos says:

One of the British invitees is Ian Hislop, editor of Private Eye (private-eye.co.uk); his invitation a most courageous one on the part of the Vatican.
I much look forward to Hislop’s subsequent comments.

Where are the comedians he’s inviting? The invitee list is a bunch of unfunny dried up never weres….

mmmm…not exactly comedians, but people who talk a lot and to the dumb masses, who can be swayed by mockery, propaganda, etc. Gee, what upcoming event in the United States, say around November, would be something the globalists would be interested in and want to influence. Ah, yes. Let me go out on a limb and say there is going to be encouragement to use humor, as it can do good! It can influence thought (really, votes) and so on. These twits are going to be told how important they are, they have a responsibility to the culture, to the world! Their ears will be tickled mightily.
The church has spent her influence and credibility, tore it to shreds, now the pope has to go to the dumbed down culture if he wants to get things done. More mockery of the Orange Man, because Orange Man bad.

It could be SJ because he once published a humor book: “Between Heaven and Mirth: Why Joy, Humor, and Laughter Are at the Heart of the Spiritual Life”

  8. Grant M says:

I think they should have invited Eccles for his services to Catholic journalism, or Michael Palin for his services to the Inquisition. Instead we have Whoopi, probably invited for her services on behalf of sacred music in convent chapels.

  9. Jones says:

He should meet with Rob Schneider who’s recently been in the news about some off color jokes he’s said and he’s Catholic. That would be interesting.

  10. Not says:

It would be a wonderful thing for “A” Pope to invite comedians to the Vatican and speak with them about “clean” comedy.
I frankly miss the comedians who could go on daytime television and do their acts.
    No profanity or sexual innuendo.

  11. Kathleen10 says:

Not: Check out Nate Bargatze on Saturday Night Live (You Tube) in his opening monologue and the “Washington’s Dream” segment. A welcome glimpse of the return of actual humor.

  12. EAW says:

According to this article the notorious Jesuit already mentioned will be there.

Look at the bright side: at least he’s not meeting with a group of “liturgists”!
