Last night at The Parish™ we had a Solemn Mass for the Election of a Supreme Pontiff.

After Mass the whole congregation sand the Litany of Loreto as the clergy knelt before the parish’s lovely image of Mary over the altar in the transept.

I was watching the procession and Litany of the Saints, and I don’t know why exactly, but it seems like whenever the Litany of the Saints is sung (the traditional Gregorian Chant, especially in Latin, not that Contemporary Becker song that invokes Origen), it feels like “stuff” is about to go down. It feels badass. Like we’re bringing in the army of heavy weights or special forces. It’s not just some song that’s nice to sing at special church occasions.
so i’m just a widower in the great american desert and i know none of the voting Cardinals, but my $0.02 is this: the next pope should not (1) come from a culture where the Church is in freefall (Europe since 1789; the western hemisphere, ANZAC, and red China since at least 1942; South Korea and Japan for the last 60 years or so) nor (2) from the curia – the last two to have done so, Paul VI and BXVI, came to very sad ends – nor (3) from a religious order that has lost more than half its members – looking at you SJ! that leaves this list in no particular order: Njue, Ranjith, Thottunkal, Kutwa, Ouedredrago, Bo, Furtado, Kovathafinaj, Mafi, Nzapalianga, Souraphiel, Ribat, Coutts (really looks the part IMO FWIW), Sako, Haradjoatmodjo, Ambongo, Tsarahazana, Advincula, Kambanda, Carmo da Silva, Goh Seng Chye, Okpaleke, Poola, Ferrao, Mulla, Brislin, Francis, Rugamba, Bessi Dogbo, David.
Yes, i paint with a broad brush. Seems to me that our predecessors in Holy Mother Church have tried to be a goodly bit too fine in their distinctions.
I think I spotted Raymond and the Conclave Crew at the glitzy gathering. Maybe even the pachamama dispenser. Magnificent chandeliers.

It *does* feel like it will be third or fourth vote Friday, doesn’t it. I’ll bet my other nickel on Pizzaballa. And exhale for the first time in 13 years.
From speaking to a priest friend in Cape Town, where Brislin was before he was moved to Johannesburg last year, he didn’t allow diocesan priests to say the TLM. So when I visit I attend the SSPX chapel, which, I was told, has grown since TC was implemented.
