I appreciate Leo for wanting lower powers to simply make TC a dead letter, but these bishops will not act unless a direct command is given from the Holy See.
Millennial here (38, M). In my opinion, not much is going to change until this wretched generation of Boomer prelates has gone off into irrelevance. There is too strong of an emotional attachment to the wacky ideas and things done in the name of Vatican II. (Sorry Fr. Z; I realize that you fall into that generation. I don’t mean you in particular, just the generation as a whole. I’m also not judging the Holy Father here; he deserves more time and experience in his current role). That being said, they “can’t put the toothpaste back in the tube” that Pope Benedict XVI let out in 2007 with Summorum Pontificum. They can try their darnedest, but the desire for the TLM, traditional sacraments, and that whole spiritual outlook and way of life are not going away. It doesn’t matter how much the Boomers wish differently.
I attended the final profession of vows a couple of years ago of the daughter of some friends of mine at the Carmel of Jesus, Mary, and Joseph in Valparaiso, Nebraska. Since that Carmel is within the Diocese of Lincoln, Bishop James Conley received the vows of this Carmelite nun (he had also ordained one of her older brothers for the FSSP a little over 10 years ago). The profession and Pontifical High Mass were done according to the 1962 Pontificale Romanum. In his homily at the Mass, Bishop Conley expressed regret that he will not be present in 25+ years to see how the current young generation of priests and religious will shape the Church as they move into leadership roles as pastors, bishops, and superiors. At the same time, he also expressed excitement and peace at that thought, as he knows that the Millennial and Zoomer Catholics who have remained in the Church and are practicing are for the most part devout and traditional, and will pass on that faith to their children. As regards TC: “This, too, shall pass.”

Re Schopenhauer on Latin:
Two years of Latin were mandatory at my little Catholic high school in Arizona back in the ’60s. At the start of the first class the teacher, an Irish-American priest from back East who was also the school principal, looked us over dubiously then said, “I know many of you are thinking to yourselves, ‘why should I learn Latin? A dead language that nobody speaks now.'” Then, “The answer is simple. You’re here to be educated and if you don’t know Latin you’re not educated.”
That was Fr. McGloin on Latin.

I am inclined to agree with Vir Qui Timet Dominum.
As a matter of principle, one ought to stand on principles they profess to hold. If the Holy Father wants _Traditionis custodes_ gone, the Holy Father should say so, preferably in plain grumpy Latin. :-)
As a practical matter, lying low and hoping (or even encouraging) subsidiary orders to treat a thing as a dead letter leaves the thing in place to lurch back to life under some future regime. “It was just mostly dead….”

Talking my language. The character of Melanie Hamilton in Gone with the Wind was based on Margaret Mitchell’s cousin who became a Nun and Mother Superior. Before she became a religious she was courted by Doc Holiday who yes did attend Catholic school and knew Latin and was a Doctor of Dental Care. He died a Catholic death in in a hospital run by Catholic Nuns.
