Infovaticana reports that an official of the DDF – while in Peru in advance of Leo XIV’s upcoming visit – actively participated in a pagan ceremony, a rite of invocation to Mother Earth with distribution of coca leaves, breathing exercises, and food offerings on the ground as “payment to the earth”.
As the video shared on social media shows, before the presentations a woman led the opening ceremony. «This month of August is very special for us, for the Andean worldview; it is the month of Mother Earth, who loves us so much, who is so affectionate, who is so generous, who gives us food», she explained to those present. In the Andean tradition, August is the month when the Pachamama is «fed» through offerings and «payments to the earth».
Vatican media, which covered the event, covered up the participation of the Vatican official. However, the video is out there plainly to be seen.

I pray for the enlightening of consciences in the Vatican. The ruling class seems so disconnected from the average layman and cleric. We don’t care about the environmentalism, paganism, or synodality on the ground. On the ground we’re dealing with a culture of indifferentists. We’re dealing with every other couple coming into the parish office for marriage after they’ve been cohabitating for 10 years. Our most faithful have to put up with horrible liturgies and often questionable celebrations of the sacraments. I wish that we’d stop worrying about what chandelier to hang up in the ballroom and begin worrying about the cracking foundation.
I’ll be sure to do a penance today. What a grim episcopal news cycle we’ve had lately.
Incidentally, it was an SSPX priest who first introduced me to praying the Acts of Faith, Hope, and Charity. I’ve found myself praying them more often lately to help weather the latest storms within the Church.

Such a cascade of offenses lately, it almost seems as if many graces have been withdrawn from a now-helpless hierarchy. Perhaps we can keep St. Michael’s Lent as part of our reparation.
I had to look up exactly what the DDF is and does (or should be doing). The DDF is the Catholic Church’s Dicastery for the Doctrine of the Faith, “a department of the Roman Curia responsible for promoting and defending Catholic doctrine. It was established to address issues of doctrinal orthodoxy within the Catholic Church.”
Something is wrong with a member of the above organization engaging in any type of “earth offering/worship” activity. It shows an extreme lack of understanding regarding what Catholic’s worship. We don’t worship created things, we worship the Uncreated Creator. God, the First Mover, the Unmoved Mover, the Uncaused Cause of all else, the Highest Being, the One Who holds all things in existence, Existence Itself. That Being alone is deserving of human worship. Everything below the Creator was necessarily created by another and has no power of its own except that which was given to it. We don’t worship anything that has power given to it, we worship the originating source of the power: God.
It’s fitting to give thanks for created things, but there is a difference between giving thanks to God for the earth and giving thanks to the earth for the earth: one act of thanksgiving makes sense and the other is misguided and potentially dangerous. One Being created another, lower being, and that lower being can’t do anything else but what it was created to do. The earth is limited and can only do “earth” things. God is limitless and can do “Godly” things.
Since humans live in the realm of created beings, we shouldn’t be worshipping anything we can physically see, with the exception of the Eucharist. The Eucharist has been miraculously changed into the body and blood of Jesus, the Second Person of God, and is deserving of human worship and adoration.
It’s upsetting that this type of “earth worship” 1.) happened at all, 2.) gets broadcasted as Catholic news, and 3.) was done before Pope Leo’s planned visit to their country. This gives an impression that Pope Leo will look upon this with no problem whatsoever. That bothers me.
Despite the uproar over Pachamama during the late pope’s reign this sacrilege happens again. How? What are these clerics thinking? And what does the pope say?

The pope is a paper tiger. If he puts his foot down on these kinds of outrages and “orders” priests to follow the rubics at Mass and add nothing… like skateboards, clowns, balloons, dancers.. he will be ignored. He has no teeth to demand the canons and rubics be followed. It appears he can only suggest and encourage proper behaviour. If he sacked a German bishop there would be an uprising in Germany among many. Besides that bishop would remain in place in his cathedral and residence despite anything the Roman bishop would threaten.
But, the TLM folks.. devils they are.

According to Anthony Stine at Return to Tradition, there was an earthquake in that area after this pagan event.
@Anneliese – I wouldn’t give the earthquake thing much credence. I looked into it, and first, Peru has a lot of small earthquakes on a pretty regular basis, apparently. And, second, nothing happened around the dates and location of this scandalous event – the closest epicenters were many, many miles away (8 to 13 hour drive).
Doesn’t make it any less scandalous – I just wouldn’t emphasize the earthquakes as holding significance.
