Pope Leo went to France and said a lot of things.
Among the things he said…
And with you, Europe, firmly rooted in its heritage, will continue to flourish and to inspire the whole world.
To the French Bishops he said…
In this way, you carry forward the heritage you have received from your forefathers in the faith, stretching back to the earliest times of the evangelization of your country.

Pope Francis wrote to you on the occasion of the reopening of Notre-Dame Cathedral in Paris: “I invite all the baptized who will joyfully enter this Cathedral to feel a legitimate sense of pride, and to reclaim their faith heritage. Dear faithful of Paris and France, this dwelling, which our heavenly Father inhabits, is yours; you are its living stones. Those who preceded you in the faith built it for you” (Message of Pope Francis on the occasion of the Reopening of Notre-Dame Cathedral in Paris, 7 December 2024). Encouraging the baptized to “reclaim their heritage of faith” is now part of your mission as Pastors, as you seek the renewal of the Church in France.

QUAERITUR:
What is this “heritage” of which he spoke? Of what is it comprised?
Isn’t the Traditional Latin Mass, Usus Antiquior, which has Gallican influences and was then celebrated in a settled form for half a millennium or so at least part of, not to say “rooted” in, France’s…
… heritage?
…. heritage of faith?
…faith heritage?
… heritage you have received from your forefathers in the faith?

Andouillette is also part of their heritage. A truly disgusting concoction. When we told the bar man in the French bar next to the Bistrot where we stuck the fork in to the andouillette, he exclaimed…. “even we frog eaters dont chew on that merde”…. he was the sawn off midget twin brother of Jack Nicholson….
So there is room for truly merde like things.
Why shouldn’t there be room for the most beautiful thing this side of heaven.
Don’t wait around the bishops will turn their noses up at only the truly beautiful…. but gulp down the most awful…offal….
Pass the sick bag.
I wish he had also gone to Chartres, older than Notre Dame. In the stained glass windows and statues, we feel the heritage of our faith.
One exception. The original gothic high alter was knocked out by a “liturgical reformer” in favor of a Romanesque one. See this history of liturgical reformers:
• – 1763: The original medieval Gothic rood screen separating the choir from the nave is demolished to update the space for modern liturgy.
• Late 18th Century: The choir area is redecorated and a new classical high altar (designed by sculptor Charles-Antoine Bridan) replaces the old medieval setup.
Mostly meaningless clatter. Francis, I mean Leo is getting rave reviews on all the Euro establishment outlets.
Yes, the ancient form of the Mass and sacraments rooted in France’s history are what the Pope is referring to when he spoke of “heritage of faith”. His recent comments are aligned with his previous call to the Bishops of France to find concrete solutions to better welcome the faithful who are drawn to the ancient form of the Mass and sacraments.

And yet, TC still remains in full force . . . . while he has all the power to reverse it with one simple document. Heck, even with one simple proclamation.
I don’t doubt his sincerity. The way in which he expresses his thoughts, however, clearly shows the philosophical school in which he was educated and in which he still finds himself; it is a labyrinth which makes action almost impossible, and a clutter which makes consistency almost unattainable.
Oh well. “Cunctator” isn’t the worst epithet to aqcuire.
He sounds good, says nice things, but I am beginning to lose hope. I look at some of the very questionable appointments he has made. Roche and Fernandez remain in place. Most significant of all, there has been no meaningful relief given to those attached to the Traditional Latin Mass, merely the availability of dispensations which are entirely dependent upon the willingness of the local ordinary to request. If your bishop is hostile to the TLM, as is our new bishop, your out of luck. Our parish had a magnificent Missa Cantata every Sunday, with a trained schola cantorum singing both chant and beautiful polyphony, eight or more adult and young men altar servers, and a large and dedicated congregation which included many young families with children. Now it’s all gone.
Fr. Z, tell your friend it’s a waste of time to pay any attention to the rhetoric of a political roadshow. Normally whatever is said is meant to obfuscate, not enlighten.
