On 2 September 1973 J.R.R. Tolkien died aged 81. Tolkien’s The Lord of the Rings is the best-selling book of the 20th Century, and is joined by seminal works The Hobbit and The Silmarillion.

Tolkien dying on the Feast of King St. Stephen – among other things a Providential accent on his insufficiently appreciated interest in Magyar and perhaps other Hungarian ‘matters’? (See The Notion Club Papers and the Tolkien Gateway “Mágol” article). Meanwhile, his longest published Latin works so far are now there to enjoy in The Bovadium Fragments (though there is Latin verse in The Collected Poems to enjoy, too).

Tolkien was a great influence in my life. I personally believe that if the Great Books list were expanded to include later books, his would definitely be included in the list.

I just encountered a 27 August post by Thomas Hillman at his blog Alas, not me, entitled “Gandalf in Latin by Way of Pop Leo” with his annotated attempt to render the quotation in ‘Magnifica humanitas’ “while we wait for the official Latin version to appear” – with, in the comments, discussion of “a Fan project that translated The Lord of the Rings into Latin by Richard Sturch”, with a link with more details – !
And now I learn that the Vigil of the Nativity of the Blessed Virgin sees the publication of a collection of essays, A Long-Expected Party: A Celebration of Tolkien’s Life, Works, and Afterlife, Edited by Erik Z. D. Ellis and Ben Reinhard – with many an intriguing title, though one also concerned with someone I have not read (Frank Herbert) and another with a wild subtitle, apparently referring to Thomas Merton. And Dr. Reinhard’s byline informs me of his interesting-sounding recent book I had not yet heard about: The High Hallow: Tolkien’s Liturgical Imagination!
