I wonder if Lady Gaga will get half the treatment dished out to Paula Deen

I am angry.

I want you to be angry.

From Newsmax:

Former Rep. Allen West, R-Fla., offers harsh criticism to pop star Lady Gaga for replacing “home of the brave” with “home for the gays” in a rendition of the National Anthem she gave last week.

Waiving a rainbow flag at a New York City gay pride rally, Lady Gaga, sang, “Oh, say does that star-spangled flag of pride yet wave, o’er the land of the free, and a home for the gays.”

West registered his disapproval in a Facebook post Monday.

“Having served in the U.S. Army for 22 years alongside some very brave men and women, I find Lady Gaga’s defiling of our National Anthem reprehensible,” he wrote.

“This young lady should be taken to Ft. McHenry and given a history lesson as to why Francis Scott Key wrote those words incredible words.”

Lady Gaga’s timing is particularly poor given that this week marks the 150th anniversary of the Battle of Gettysburg and the 237th anniversary of the Declaration of Independence, West said.

“She and all those who cheered her abomination should be ashamed and apologize to every serving and retired member of our Armed Services.”

West served one term in Congress before losing a close race to now-Rep. Patrick Murphy, D-Fla., in November.

Apologizing is not enough. I hope this stunt kills her career.

A reminder:

O say can you see by the dawn’s early light,
What so proudly we hailed at the twilight’s last gleaming,
Whose broad stripes and bright stars through the perilous fight,
O’er the ramparts we watched, were so gallantly streaming?
And the rockets’ red glare, the bombs bursting in air,
Gave proof through the night that our flag was still there;
O say does that star-spangled banner yet wave,
O’er the land of the free and the home of the brave?

On the shore dimly seen through the mists of the deep,
Where the foe’s haughty host in dread silence reposes,
What is that which the breeze, o’er the towering steep,
As it fitfully blows, half conceals, half discloses?
Now it catches the gleam of the morning’s first beam,
In full glory reflected now shines in the stream:
‘Tis the star-spangled banner, O! long may it wave
O’er the land of the free and the home of the brave.

And where is that band who so vauntingly swore
That the havoc of war and the battle’s confusion,
A home and a country, should leave us no more?
Their blood has washed out their foul footsteps’ pollution.
No refuge could save the hireling and slave
From the terror of flight, or the gloom of the grave:
And the star-spangled banner in triumph doth wave,
O’er the land of the free and the home of the brave.

O thus be it ever, when freemen shall stand
Between their loved home and the war’s desolation.
Blest with vict’ry and peace, may the Heav’n rescued land
Praise the Power that hath made and preserved us a nation!
Then conquer we must, when our cause it is just,
And this be our motto: “In God is our trust.”
And the star-spangled banner in triumph shall wave
O’er the land of the free and the home of the brave!

  1. Why do we keep giving the task of singing the national anthem to morons like Lady Gaga? Was this not done in the full expectation that she would pull some stupid stunt? If pulling stupid stunts is what the moron is known for, why would she behave any differently this time?

She deserves to have her career blasted for this and a lot more, and whoever offered her the gig deserves to be canned.

  2. Philangelus says:

This stunt will only help her career. Celebrities thrive on attention, both positive and negative.

This is the same person who sings “God makes no mistakes” when it comes to gays (in the song “Born This Way”) but supports abortion rights because…well, um…no mistakes except if you didn’t want to be pregnant?…

  3. Nordic Breed says:

Nothing will happen to her because she is being politically correct. The PCs in America can do no wrong and the sheeple following are not using their brains for thinking. It’s been that way for a long time thanks to our stellar public school system.

  4. mamajen says:

Her career’s been on a downslide for a while. If anything, this was a cry for attention and an attempt to remain relevant. But hopefully it does backfire.

  5. inexcels says:

Best thing to do with Lady Gaga is the same thing I’ve always done: completely ignore her. That’s the best punishment you can dish out. What is a celebrity anyway, other than someone who managed to become famous through their desperation for attention. It’s like a fire: starve it of oxygen and it’ll eventually go out.

  6. Muv says:

This was a cunning career move. From now on her gigs will be attended by hordes of homosexuals. She will make a mint.

  7. AA Cunningham says:

The latest manifestation of the tyranny of the intrinsically disordered minority.

  8. frjim4321 says:

This only makes sense if one equates “gay” with the”n-word.”

I’m not a Lady Gaga fan, so I don’t listen to her.

If Allen West doesn’t like her, I suggest that he does not listen to her.

Some people aren’t happy unless they have something to be outraged about.

  9. Bosco says:

The general descent into civil anarchy and moral depravity grows exponentially with every passing day. The speed with which all is unravelling before our very eyes is palpable.

  10. majuscule says:

frjim4321… Perhaps you’d “get it” if this was 160 years ago and she sang, “Land of the free and home of the slaves”…?

  11. James Joseph says:

Lady Gaga, another one of my fellow Italian-Americans gone loco with ‘this is sacred ground’ type of trash.

Or in the words of the lady who cuts my hair whose name is Annuciation, “Contraception let’s you have that special moment together without all the worries of am I going to have a kid.”

This was said in the same barber shop that last week some fella came in for a haircut. This is a guy of some means; good money, who mentioned that he and his wife had their last little girl, aged 9 now, really late. He is now 43. His wife is now 39. He kept mentioned how tough it is and how it does not think he could handle another one…. psychologically I interpreted.

How effeminised we have become! A 43 year-man in great physical shape with loads of money is afraid that a squirming helpless infant would destroy him; like the elephant and the mouse.

  12. idelsan says:

The worst part? She is “catholic”.

  13. StJude says:

America’s moral decay is moving along at a good clip.

  14. Bob B. says:

Notice that the Food Network has nothing to say about Sandra Lee and Gov. Cuomo?

  15. Geoffrey says:

This will no doubt help her career… If that’s what you want to call it.

  16. SKAY says:

She may well be invited to this White House by this President to sing the song her way. The low information voters and the Biden/Pelosi Catholics will love it.

It is all about votes to keep the Senate and get the House back for the Democrats so that he can go full steam ahead on the rest of his agenda. It will not bode well for the true Catholic Church and true Christianity and certainly not the Constitution as written.

  17. avecrux says:

I would be angry if someone changed the national anthem to “land of the free and the home of the Catholics” – even though I am one – and this is my home. It’s just nuts to change the anthem. That she gets a pass for it because her “cause” is PC… not surprising.

  18. mamajen says:

    Fr. Jim,

I’ve been around enough to know that referring to homosexuals as “the gays” is NOT received any better than the “N word”. But, like that word, some people get away with it and some get crucified for it. Lady Gaga’s lyric switcheroo was disrespectful to everyone, including the people she was trying to support. Maybe someday the “gay community” will wake up and realize they’re being patronized and being used.

  19. mamajen says:

I can’t conjure up much sympathy for Paula Deen. She’s a liberal who successfully played a role that appealed to a different audience. She displayed questionable business ethics when she kept her diabetes secret until a medication endorsement deal was signed. And if the accusations, which go well beyond using a bad word once, are true, then I wouldn’t want to work with her either.

Political correctness is out of control for sure. But I’m not going to over-correct in the opposite direction. It seems like people are so fed up that they rebel by excusing or even celebrating otherwise nasty/unclassy behavior, and that’s not good.

  20. Stumbler but trying says:

Like all passing fancies, Lady Gags-me-lots is soon a “has been” and rightly so. She may have her homosexual followers all she wants but that still does not make her an artist that is worth considering much less listening to. I don’t.

Catholic? Like Madonna is? Another “has been”…good thing is when our days in the sun come to an end…they come to an end…all a matter of time. Let’s pray for these ladies that they may wake up before it is too late. Pray for me too please as I pray for all of you.

Happy 4th of July everyone! God bless America! May we continue to stand firm under the mantle of the Patroness of the Americas, our Lady and Mother, the Holy Virgin Mary.

  21. Dave N. says:

I can’t think of three people that I would more like to see quickly pass from the national scene than Lady Gaga, Allen West, and Paula Deen. What a collection.

  22. av8er says:

    @Dave N.

LTC Allen West is a Patriot. Not to be equated with Lady Dum Dum or Paula Dean.

  23. monmir says:

When no protesting voice is left it will mean that we will all have become idiots. Scary!
We have become used to soft thinking as we have been lead astray by some of our bishops, priests, and head of USCCB(?) but thanks be to God for all who show us the road to heaven, we must encourage them and demonstrate we know the difference between the right and the wrong road.
Let’s learn to say No and say it loud and clear.
Being passive is not a good option.

  24. The Masked Chicken says:

The question is not whether America was worth defending in the past, but whether or not it will be worth defending in the future. It is, very quickly, becoming, The Land of Big Greed and The Home of the Depraved. There are still many good, honest people, but the tide of evil is threatening to swamp them. One can only bail out the boat so fast.

  25. gambletrainman says:

“I hope this stunt kills her career”.

Sorry, Father, but if you’ve noticed the way this country has accepted homosexual lifestyles, “gay” marriages, children suing to use same sex restrooms in schools, etc., I don’t see how this will kill her career. Surely, her “career” is on the downslide, but that is happening with other “teen stars” as well. When people (especially kids) get bored, the “stars” lose their lustre.
Did not Christ Himself say that before He returns, this world will be worse than Sodom and Gomorrha? He also said that He will be more lenient to those inhabitants on the Day of Judgement (because they didn’t know better) than He will be of us, who know better. Heaven help us!

Hmm…someone here is equating dislike of what someone does with dislike of the person herself.
Opposed to slavery? Don’t own one.

  28. Giuseppe says:

Re. Gaga: a major career boost. She’s been lying low this year; this gives her some added publicity and ‘street cred’ (credibilitas viarum). New York is the home of the gays. Anal and oral sexual acts among consenting adults are no longer unacceptable in much of society. Added advantage: no one will ‘accidentally’ become pregnant, so Planned Parenthood is thrilled that no unplanned pregnancies will be subject to the summer-session laws in Texas, Ohio, and North Carolina. Disdain of sodomy is ‘retro’ nowadays: few in America today would condemn consensual non-marital sexual activity, especially if uncomplicated by pregnancy.

I am not sure how this can hurt her career-wise. Much as I dislike her, her songs are well written, such that they are. Good example: “Bad Romance”. Dumb song, to be sure. But the interweaving of melodies is genius: Anton Bruckner would be impressed how she manages a 3-melody exposition, including one which is predominantly a I-V-bass line. To quote a colleague, “if Schubert were alive in 2011, he’d hang out with Gaga.” (I credit her years of Catholic schooling for some of her musical talents, even though she’s post-V II.)

Re. gay marriage, I do not know a single person under 30 who is not listening to the song Same Love (Macklemore and Lewis feat. Mary Lambert) this summer.

It’s probably the only way she’ll ever crack a Billboard Top Ten list again:
    http://www.billboard.com/articles/list/513562/10-worst-national-anthem-performances-ever

Looking at those, she has to be a shoe-in to shoot to number one….worst ever.

  30. Priam1184 says:

According to the current religion that predominates in this land Lady Gaga is absolutely correct. This is our Novus Ordo Seclorum Father.

  31. letchitsa1 says:

She’s a liberal and liberals love her so nothing will happen. 90% or more of the outcry in this country over anything comes from liberals, many of whom draw their joy from tearing other people down. She can’t stoop much lower, so there’s nothing to destroy there.
