CQ CQ CQ: #HamRadio – ZedNet reminder – Sunday 13 Dec – evening at 2000h EST (0100h ZULU 13 Dec).

Last Sunday we started up our very first ZedNet on in the evening at 8PM EST.   We had five check ins.

I had a devil of a time connecting (cf. Zuhlsdorf’s Law) because Brandmeister has been making changes for security and… I did NOT get a notice from them!   Eventually the change I had to make was communicated to me and it worked after I altered the settings on my DMR hotspot.

Anyone who uses Brandmeister ought to know this about their changes: HERE

In effect, they are applying security to their “masters”. They want you to set a personal password.  I did and it works.

One of the participants in the ZedNet mentioned the possible conflict with the St Maximillian Kolbe Net on 80m on Sunday nights. We are going to stick to this slot for a while, at least, to try to get it going.

I hope some of you hams with DMR etc. access will check in!

Zednet
exists on the Yaesu System Fusion (Wires-X) “room” 28598, which is cross-linked to Brandmeister (BM) DMR worldwide talkgroup 31429, which essentially gives world-wide multi-mode access to a common ham radio network.  Right not, no Echolink.  It worked once but not now.

Any fellow hams who have access locally to a Yaesu System Fusion repeater, a repeater on the BM network, or a multi-mode hotspot that’s registered with BM can get on and have a rag chew…. 24/7/365

WB0YLE gave me a clear list, with links, of everything you need to get involved.

HERE

I created a page for the List of YOUR callsigns.  HERE  Chime in or drop me a note if your call doesn’t appear in the list.

Your Sunday Sermon Notes – 3rd Sunday of Advent “Gaudete” – 2020 – POLL: Rose Vestments?

Was there a GOOD point made in the sermon you heard at the Mass for your Sunday (obligation or none), either live or on the internet? Let us know what it was. Too many people today are without good, strong preaching, to the detriment of all. Share the good stuff.

Also, are your churches opening up? What was attendance like?

For my part,…

Remember… real priests wear rosacea!

Yeah… just go with it.

On Gaudete Sunday the shade of the "rose" vestments (on the celebrant) was...

Speaking of madder, I am reminded of the scene in the Aubrey/Maturin novel by Patrick O’Brian‘s HMS Surprise.  (UK HERE) The ship’s surgeon, an eminent naturalist, Dr. Stephen Maturin was conducting an experiment on some rats.  He had been feeding them madder.  He intended eventually to dissect them to see if the red stuff had colored their bones and penetrated to the marrow.  It was not to be.  Hungry midshipmen ate his fat, madder saturated rats whilst he was marooned on St. Paul’s Rock.  Note the spiffing partitive genitive in the first sentence of the following:

In time it appeared that Babbington had eaten of the Doctor’s rats; and that he was sorry now.

‘Why, no, Babbington,’ said [Capt.] Jack. ‘No. That was an infernal shabby thing to do; mean and very like a scrub. The Doctor has been a good friend to you – none better. Who patched up your arm, when they all swore it must come off? Who put you into his cot and sat by you all night, holding the wound? Who – ‘

Babbington could not bear it; he burst into tears. Though an acting-lieutenant he wiped his eyes on his sleeve, and through his sobs he gave Jack to understand that unknown hands had wafted these prime millers [aka rats] into the larboard midshipmen’s berth; that although he had had no hand in their cutting-out – indeed, would have prevented it, having the greatest love for the Doctor, so much so that he had fought Braithwaite over a chest for calling the Doctor ‘a Dutch-built quizz’ – yet, the rats being already dead, and dressed with onion-sauce, and he so hungry after rattling down the shrouds, he had thought it a pity to let the others scoff the lot. Had lived with a troubled conscience ever since: had in fact expected a summons to the cabin.

‘You would have been living with a troubled stomach if you had known what was in ‘em; the Doctor had -’

‘I tell you what it is, Jack,’ said Stephen, walking quickly in. ‘Oh, I beg your pardon.’

‘No, stay, Doctor. Stay, if you please,’ cried Jack.

Babbington looked wretchedly from one to the other, licked his lips and said, ‘I ate your rat, sir. I am very sorry, and I ask your pardon.’

‘Did you so?’ said Stephen mildly. ‘Well, I hope you enjoyed it.

Listen, Jack, will you look at my list, now?’

‘He only ate it when it was dead,’ said Jack.

‘It would have been a strangely hasty, agitated meal, had he ate it before,’ said Stephen, looking attentively at his list. ‘Tell me, sir, did you happen to keep any of the bones?’

‘No, sir. I am very sorry, but we usually crunch ‘em up, like larks. Some of the chaps said they looked uncommon dark, however.’

‘Poor fellows, poor fellows,’ said Stephen in a low, inward voice.

‘Do you wish me to take notice of this theft, Dr Maturin?’ asked Jack.

‘No, my dear, none at all. Nature will take care of that, I am afraid.’

Stephen is eventually revenged in a creative way – involving laxatives – which also kept him true to his Hippocratic Oath.

Later in that same book, by the by, Jack will debauch Stephen’s pet sloth with grog and turn it into an alcoholic.

Which it’s tough going for the Doctor on the high seas, as Preserved would put it.

But I digress.

Have a rosy Sunday.

Mexico’s senior Catholic leader backs civil unions for gay couples

The Mexican Catholic Church’s highest-ranking bishop agrees with recent comments by Pope Francis in support of legal protections offered by civil unions for gay couples, the prelate told Reuters, stressing that no family member should ever be rejected.

[…]

Cardinal Carlos Aguiar, archbishop of Mexico City, said in an interview that he backs the pope’s comments from a documentary that premiered in October and used previously unseen footage from an interview he gave to Mexican broadcaster Televisa. The comments marked the first time a sitting pope had advocated any legal protections for gay couples.

“I completely agree,” said Aguiar, a long-time ally of Pope Francis, who spoke ahead of Saturday’s feast day of the Virgin of Guadalupe, one of the Mexican Church’s most important annual celebrations.

In the documentary, entitled “Francesco,” the pope says, “Homosexual people have the right to be in a family, they are children of god,” and “what we have to have is a civil union law, that way they are legally covered.”

The pope’s comments did not signal any change in church doctrine on homosexuality or support for same-sex marriage, which the Vatican emphasized after the remarks made headlines across the globe.

But Francis’ more open and inclusive tone has marked a sharp contrast with his more conservative predecessor, Pope Benedict XVI.

[…]

What a load of Schumer! Notice the dig at Benedict? Go ahead and find something harsh that Benedict said about these people.

Back in October, it was reported that Francis said in an interview that he supported same-sex civil unions.  Yes.  He really thinks that.

That was extremely imprudent.  I wrote that it didn’t change the Church’s teachings, but it is open to misinterpretation and it could lead to scandal about the issue of homosexual acts.

And now this guy in Mexico says this.

The 2020 Vatican Nativity Scene. Cameo appearance by the Mandalorian and “Baby Yoda”

Following last year’s hideous display of bad taste and politically correct pandering, this year’s Nativity scene in St. Peter’s Square plunges to the nadir of this annus horribilis.

From Vatican News:

The Monumental Nativity Scene is made up of ceramic statues. It is a work created by the pupils and the teachers of the Art Institute “F.A. Grue”, the current state art high school for design, which, in the decade 1965-1975, dedicated its teaching activity to the Christmas theme.

St. Peter’s Square will see only part of the fragile collection, made up of 54 statues, exhibited.

In studio, which does its best…

In situ… which is worse…  Hmmm…. doesn’t look like the shot, above.   But… just what is that?

What the hell is this?  Star Wars?

I know!  That’s the Mandalorian with “Baby Yoda” and one of his Sand People allies!

At this point I would insert a short Christmas hymn from a Tusken Raider.

EVERYBODY SING!

To my mind this just about sums up the contribution of the Holy See to the world this year.

UPDATE: Fr. John Hollowell – still battling a brain tumor

In February I posted about a priest with a brain tumor, Fr. John Hollowell.  HERE

Here is an an excerpt from an email update.  He will have another MRI soon, 16 Dec.

If the MRI does show a continued tumor, I’m certainly prepared to wait another 6 months while undergoing the final 3 rounds of chemo. I am totally open to the possibility that somehow me living the life of a hermit at this time is the best way to serve my parishioners and students. However, if a miraculous healing were to take place, I would obviously be okay with that!

He says that the cause for a “servant of God” the first bishop in Indiana is open.  He is asking for prayers for the intercession of Bp. Simon Brute.

His prayer:

“Heavenly Father, you gave your servant Bishop Simon Brute pastoral zeal and ardent charity. Through his intercession, if it be Your Will, may Fr. Hollowell’s MRI on December 16th show no tumor, and may this be a miracle that moves Bishop Simon Brute’s beatification and canonization forward. Amen.”

I know you in your generosity will offer this targeted prayer for the intercession of Bp. Simon Brute.

Not… “And I’ll add all my favorite saints!”  Not… “And I’ll pray to “Joe Bagofdonuts whose cause is open in the Diocese of Blackduck!”  Not… “and Jesus, Mary and Joseph and all the saints!”  Not… Not… Not…

Just that.

THAT’s how miracles are authenticated…. targeted prayer that can be demonstrated.

Our prayerful best wishes for Fr. Hollowell.
