The official Parodohymnodist of the blog, Fr. Ferguson, has sent me an offering for the observance of Reformation Day.
(Oh, how I wish there were a choir with big pipe organ out there who would record this and send it to me… anyone? ARE THERE choirs anymore?)
To the tune of “A Mighty Fortress Is Our God”
A mighty fortress is our God,
our Church is His forever:
with faith and works in hand we trod,
the path of truth together.
But still our Lutheran foe,
doth try to tell us no,
and faith alone they say,
will come to save the day,
but they are filled with error.
Did we in our own strength confide,
we’d miss the mark completely,
with faith and works we’re justified,
as Paul tells us quite neatly.
our merits joined with Christ’s
not Wittenberg’s zeitgeist,
can save a drifting soul,
and shriven, become whole,
not lost to endless terror.
So Luther, preach your heart out man,
and take Kate from the cloister,
pin all your hopes on faith alone,
in your Thuringian oyster.
The pearl remains in Rome,
sweet orthodoxy’s home.
Indulge us, please, we pray
to have the final say,
You’re wrong and now know better.
