In this year dedicated to priests and prayer for priests, Holy Church has provided lay people with a special plenary indulgence on first Thursdays of each month.
For the faithful, a plenary indulgence can be obtained on the opening and closing days of the Year for Priests, on the 150th anniversary of the death of St. Jean-Marie Vianney, on the first Thursday of the month, or on any other day established by the ordinaries of particular places for the good of the faithful.
To obtain the indulgence the faithful must attend Mass in an oratory or Church and offer prayers to "Jesus Christ, supreme and eternal Priest, for the priests of the Church, or perform any good work to sanctify and mould them to his heart."
The conditions for the faithful for earning a plenary indulgence are to have gone to confession and prayed for the intentions of the Pope.

His mission intention is: "That Christians in Laos, Cambodia and Myanmar, who often meet with great difficulties, may not be discouraged from announcing the Gospel to their brothers, trusting in the strength of the Holy Spirit".

What is the acceptable time “lapse” between the 1st Thursday and making a Sacramental Confession?

In literature approved by bishops which I have here, three weeks is the acceptable time. In other words, one Sacramental Confession hold for three weeks of plenary indulgences. The other conditions, as set under the revised code of indulgences under John Paul II include, the reception of Holy Communion at Mass on the day one is praying for the indulgence, an Our Father, Hail Mary and Glory Be for the Intention of the Holy Father, and a serious intention to separate one’s self from venial sin. The above prayer is in addition to the usual conditions.

Beginning this First Thursday and until the end of the Year of the Priest our monastic community will have the EF of the Roman Rite offered for the priests, living and deceased, who are enrolled in our Masses. When it is possible liturgically, we offer the votive Mass of Jesus Christ, Eternal High Priest. We also have Exposition and Benediction of the Blessed Sacrament with the “Litany of Jesus Christ, Priest and Victim” which is available from the Institute on Religious Life in a beautiful pamphlet (call847-573-8975 to order). you know, the Bishop of Tulsa had us offer weekly adoration for priests when the scandal was going on…alas, only a few of us attended on Friday, but when they switched to Thursday and began the adoration with mass, it improved.
