REMINDER: Bp. Trautman’s jihad against the new translation
I want to bring back to your minds that His Excellency Most Rev. Donald W. Trautman will try to derail the new translation during the upcoming meeting of the USCCB in Baltimore (16-19 Nov.).

During the November '09 plenary USCCB meeting should the bishops follow Bp. Trautman's lead and reject the translation for the sake of forcing a review of the whole project?

This is getting so old. How many years have they been dithering over these few needed corrections. It puts me in mind of one Sunday morning circa 1970-75ish when our Pastor said: Next Sunday at Communion time just line up in the center aisle and move forward to the priest or other minister (other minister? What can that mean? We were soon to find out!) Do not approach the altar rail. You will be given Communion in your hand just so. There will be no kneeling or receiving on the tongue. And that was it.There was no leadup, no backward glancing, no grief counselors. Anyone who questioned it was ‘not a good Catholic’. It was to be a 35 year sentence. Fast forward to 2007ish: “The Faithful and their Pastors will be given 3…years to prepare for these very few verbal cosmic changes” and still there is teethgrinding and hand wringing. Oh, dear, what will Bishop Jones say? Will the Jesuits/Franciscans revolt? What will the chancery office do? Ad infinitum. Grow a spine, People of God, and take your medicine like we Roman Catholics had to in the bad old days.

The scary thing is the Japanese (aka Jesuit command – Far East) based their translation on the English one O_O no wonder the Church has FAILED in that country – you think their is a priest shortage here over there the clergy will run out, there is no if it will. The Primate/Epsicopla president over there may a plea last year for missionaries to come from other Asian countries.

I vividly remember a few years back, nominations were being taken for elections at our bishop’s conference. Now normally these nominations come form a list prepared by a committee. But in this case, much to my astonishment, from the grave Cardinal Bernardin raised his hand and was immediately recognized by Bishop Gregory. The late Cardinal nominated Bishop Trautman to run for the ICEL slot, this nomination was seconded by French Archbishop Jean Jadot. Much to my dismay His Excellency Most Rev. Donald W. Trautman defeated the other very qualified men. As they say the rest is history.

Comment by idatom — 12 November 2009 @ 11:04 amI think Bp. Trautman represents a diehard group that wishes to detach the Church in our country from Rome, by way of a separate liturgy. The group seems determined to confront Rome on these texts.
Comment by Tominellay — 12 November 2009 @ 11:06 amThere is a problem with doing something by committee: if one very influential group gets many of its people on the committee they can get the text written the way they want. We see that now with OOXML (the Microsoft Office XML standard) at ISO. It would have been better to have the original text translated by one set of translators, reviewed and corrected by experts fluent in the language translated to (grammar experts, technical experts, the translators, etc.) and then back translated by another group of translators to the original language to determine if the translated product retained the meaning of the original. Then have the person/group that determined the original text determine whether the translation is good enough.

Your account sounds accurate, but you didn’t mention that the number of votes counted electronically exceeded the number of bishops present and eligible to vote. Apparently the names of those who voted from the Great Beyond were never revealed, but there was a rumor that one had the initials A.B.

I encouraged our lay members today at our monthly formation meeting to contact our bishop to ask him to approve the translations submitted at the upcoming meeting and gave them a synopsis of this whole thing. Thank you for making us aware of this; if our continued development (organic?) of the vernacular in the Roman Rite in the Ordinary Form is to bear any real fruit, we have to pray what the Latin original actually says…otherwise, we are going to be taken further from the intent of ‘Sacrosanctum concilium’, the writings of John Paul II on the Sacred Liturgy and the work that Pope Benedict XVI done has so diligently. And that is a horrible thought.
