New Mars Rover images coming in!

The other day I was pretty excited about the safe landing of the new Mars rover Curiosity.  The dangerous entry and landing built a real excitement.  Then the first images came in.  Very cool.

Now that Curiosity has been on the martian soil for a while, more and clearer images are beaming to Earth.

Here is the latest.

Fr. Z, did you have a Bombay Sapphire martini with your lunch?

    Looks like Tatooine.

George Lucas said they were in a Galaxy far far away. (These are Star Wars walking tanks (model AT-AT) for those who don’t know.)

‘Twould be interesting to see those turtle-like formations from up close.

..Or should I be looking for a vindictive Martian with a plasma beam? Tom Cruise might want to run for cover.

  5. Art says:

Looks like the Empire took a wrong turn at Proxima Centauri – those AT-ATs ought to be on Hoth!

  6. Pedantic Classicist says:

O Hercules! teh lolz. I call Vincenzo-related shenanigans. I suspect, acardnal, that Fr. Z and Vincenzo hatched this over a TWO-martini skype lunch.

The funny thing is that these will turn out to be 1 foot tall rock formations when the rover gets closer. Something similar happened with that alleged person on Mars a few years ago, though I don’t totally recall all the details.

    Holy Tatooine, Batman…

Wait… these AREN’T the droids we’re looking for?

  9. Fr. Frank says:

Are those Barbara Marx Hubbard’s puppy dogs running loose in the background? She really should have kennelled them before leaving home. Some wymyn! Fooey!

Then again, I’m probably being rash. It’s bound to be hard being a Visionary in the midst of full-blown Regenopause and a pet owner, too.

    Did somebody beat us here?
“sir, you should have made your presence known.”
    “And spoil that beautiful scene?”

Could this be TEOTWAWKI? Perhaps a nuclear event in St. Louis?

I was thinking the same thing! Now, I can break out my AT-AT (one of the few remaining Star Wars toys that I had as a kid) and play Mars Rover Attacks!

“Imperial troops have entered the base! Imperial troops have entered the…”

  20. Darren says:

@Mixolydian no, those are not Imperial troops… if you look VERY VERY CAREFULLY, behind the AT-ATs is a group of nuns on a bus…

  21. Kathy C says:

Mixolydian – what instrument do you play?
