About this blog…
“This blog is like a fusion of the Baroque ‘salon’ with its well-tuned harpsichord around which polite society gathered for entertainment and edification and, on the other hand, a Wild West “saloon” with its out-of-tune piano and swinging doors, where everyone has a gun and something to say. Nevertheless, we try to point our discussions back to what it is to be Catholic in this increasingly difficult age, to love God, and how to get to heaven.” – Fr. Z

- The most evident mark of God’s anger and the most terrible castigation He can inflict upon the world are manifested when He permits His people to fall into the hands of clerics who are priests more in name than in deed, priests who practice the cruelty of ravening wolves rather than the charity and affection of devoted shepherds.

“Until the Lord be pleased to settle, through the instrumentality of the princes of the Church and the lawful ministers of His justice, the trouble aroused by the pride of a few and the ignorance of some others, let us with the help of God endeavor with calm and humble patience to render love for hatred, to avoid disputes with the silly, to keep to the truth and not fight with the weapons of falsehood, and to beg of God at all times that in all our thoughts and desires, in all our words and actions, He may hold the first place who calls Himself the origin of all things.”

Don’t rely on popes, bishops and priests.
“He [Satan] will set up a counter-Church which will be the ape of the Church because, he the devil, is the ape of God. It will have all the notes and characteristics of the Church, but in reverse and emptied of its divine content. It will be a mystical body of the anti-Christ that will in all externals resemble the mystical body of Christ. In desperate need for God, whom he nevertheless refuses to adore, modern man in his loneliness and frustration will hunger more and more for membership in a community that will give him enlargement of purpose, but at the cost of losing himself in some vague collectivity.”
“Who is going to save our Church? Not our bishops, not our priests and religious. It is up to you, the people. You have the minds, the eyes, and the ears to save the Church. Your mission is to see that your priests act like priests, your bishops act like bishops.”- Fulton Sheen

"But if, in any layman who is indeed imbued with literature, ignorance of the Latin language, which we can truly call the 'catholic' language, indicates a certain sluggishness in his love toward the Church, how much more fitting it is that each and every cleric should be adequately practiced and skilled in that language!" - Pius XI
"Let us realize that this remark of Cicero (Brutus 37, 140) can be in a certain way referred to [young lay people]: 'It is not so much a matter of distinction to know Latin as it is disgraceful not to know it.'" - St. John Paul II

Let us pray…
Grant unto thy Church, we beseech Thee, O merciful God, that She, being gathered together by the Holy Ghost, may be in no wise troubled by attack from her foes. O God, who by sin art offended and by penance pacified, mercifully regard the prayers of Thy people making supplication unto Thee, and turn away the scourges of Thine anger which we deserve for our sins. Almighty and Everlasting God, in whose Hand are the power and the government of every realm: look down upon and help the Christian people that the heathen nations who trust in the fierceness of their own might may be crushed by the power of thine Arm. Through our Lord Jesus Christ, Thy Son, who liveth and reigneth with Thee in the unity of the Holy Ghost, God, world without end. R. Amen.

Thumbs up!
Thanks. I needed that.
I can write now that I have got back in my chair and stopped crying! That was good.
Yep, that’s how it works. Next time, let the Papal Nuncio order please. ;)
That may be the funniest cartoon I have ever seen. Thank you Father.
Funniest thing I’ve seen in ages! Especially on this topic. Thanks!
I have said before that the real news story will be “News media accurately report Church teaching”; I’m keeping the parka in the attack, just in case.
I got a belly laugh from that one– thanks!
thanks Fr Z. think we all needed that!
I sort of like the idea of Frank and Benny kicking back to enjoy a pizza together.
Can’t really see either one of them liking anchovies (though Frank is clearly the more adventurous one).
Heretics do not eat anchovies.
How do I know? Because I eat anchovies.
Awesome.
I found it terribly funny! Read it to my hubby. Not sure he quite got why I was so tickled by it. Thank you for the laugh.
Heh.
Pizza with anchovies always makes me think of a co-worker a while ago who was also a devout Catholic. During Lent when we would go out to lunch on Fridays we would make us order plain pizza with anchovies. A form of penance I guess :)
that should be “… on Fridays he would …”
It seems to me, what is happening with Pope Francis and the media stories may be what happened after Vatican II. When you leave it to the media to tell us what the Pope said, you know you’re going to be lead down the wrong path. Back then, we did not have the internet and fabulous Catholic bloggers such as dear Father Z to tell us “what did the Council really say.” Since the evil father of lies is in charge of this world, I know I cannot believe what the media tells me, about anything. I certainly do not trust them to tell me what the Pope really said. I trust in the Holy Spirit to give us the right Pope. I am deeply thankful for and to Father Z and his explanations so I do not have to wonder what it really means, as I would have when Vatican II was new. I think I see how it got hijacked now. Father Z, I continue to pray for you and all your intentions. Thank you so much for all you do.
Best cartoon ever; I hope both Pope Francis and Pope Benedict Emeritus get to see this cartoon!!!! It’s a pause that refreshes and “great medicine” – this laughter. I’m still laughing.
Dear SMC-BC
I believe there may be an unfortunate misunderstanding of the “wound” mentioned in your link.
It may be not a wound allegedly caused by Pope Francis, but a wound caused by those who misinterpret VII.
Perhaps the following may shed a little light on why Pope Francis made the restriction to the one group from celebrating the Mass in the ancient rite which Benedict XVI had guaranteed for all…..
I had heard a long while back, Mother Angelica of EWTN, when deciding to broadcast their Daily Mass, had wanted to have the Priest face the Altar with his back towards the people. The Pope at that time asked them to have the Priest face the people, – reason as I “remember” it was that so the viewers would not think that it was a mistake of Vatican II to face the people. Both ways must be considered acceptable.
Mother Angelica a few years ago received the Cross of Honor from Benedict XVI, the highest award that a Pope can give laity or religious.
LOL. I think the 2 prophets in white deserve an extra large pizza with everything on it, hold the anchovies, and two large cups of Mystic Monk Coffee™……
Oh, and don’t forget the Fr. Z mugs! [Do the black, say the red]. Can we get these in German and Spanish? ;-)
ev —
I remember reading in one of Raymond Arroyo’s books about Mother Marie Angelica that it was in fact the local Bishop in Birmingham (at the time) who prevented the ad orientem posture on the TV Mass. Initially the Bishop didn’t have a problem with ad orientem, because the celebrant was facing the sisters, who were in the choir area behind “the fence.” When the sisters moved out of Irondale, that is when ad orientem posture on TV stopped.
The Mass which is said for the sisters at their shrine in Hanceville is ad orientem, and as far as I am aware it always has been. In addition, when EWTN broadcasts an Extraordinary Form Mass, it is ad orientem and no one has a problem with it.
Also, when they broadcast Mass from Hanceville, it is usually ad orientem, as it was at the funeral of Deacon Bill.
