Yes, I heard a sermon with a lot of humor, much talk about the value of missionary work inspired by the Holy Spirit, and a clever interweaving of scripture. Unfortunately, the homilist was a nun (somewhere I formerly considered a ‘safe’ church).

  2. iudicame says:

Father spoke of evangelization and the three imperative words: JESUS- JESUS- Now

  3. timfout says:

Will we be like the apostles before or after Pentecost?

  4. Nancy D. says:

What I did not hear is a single word about the mass exodus, the great falling away, in Ireland.

  5. andia says:

Saturday Mass: Nothing about the Pentecost at all, but a sermon about how people treat each other.

Sunday Mass, was the first Mass of a newly ordained permanent Deacon-a very nice sermon about how important it is to remember that the same Spirit that poured down on the Apostles was pouring down on us today- and how the deacon saw the spirit moving in the Church today…both the parish and the Church as a whole.

Fr. Perrone discussed some quotes by St. Augustine on the Holy Spirit. He discusses the need for us to be in the state of grace, and free of sin, because the Holy Spirit dwells within us, only if we are in a state of grace. He goes on to say that there are two possibilities for us: To be, or not to be, in the state of grace; to be, or not to be, with the Holy Spirit.

Audio for the roughly 9 minute homily has been shared at the new GrottoCast website, which I encourage people to follow if they are interested in hearing Fr. Perrone’s homilies regularly. In the latest post, a number of listening and following options are discussed.

FSSP: Don’t be fooled by, or seek, ersatz “manifestations of the Holy Spirit.” The Spirit that came in a violent onrush on Pentecost more often worked (and works) in virtual obscurity, as at the Incarnation, upon people humbly disposed to His operation.

  8. Gerard Plourde says:

The homily made the point that living our lives in accordance with the Catholic faith is the greatest missionary witness we can give. (Slightly off topic – Unfailingly throughout the year, our pastor, like Fr. Z., places strong emphasis on the need for the Sacrament of Penance.)

  9. SanSan says:

Attended Our Lady of Lebanon Marionite Mass……What a well kept secret in the Catholic Church…..the Mass was said in English and Aramaic (sp), the parishioners were very friendly toward us and asked us to come back……(never heard that at any other parish)
the Mass was beautiful and rich with reverance. The Priest shared the 7 gifts of the Holy Spirit and how we must “unwrap” these gifts each day and throughout our lives in order to grow in virtue (meditate on them and ask God for the grace of each gift). In the afternoon, after a wonderful luncheon feast, we enjoyed a one woman show about St. Faustina and her diary. Beautiful.

  10. Matt Robare says:

I went to the regular NO Mass and the homily was about putting Bl. Oscar Romero in the context of Pentecost.

Later, at the same church, there was a Solemn Mass w/ the St. Paul’s Boys’ Choir — which was the most beautiful things I’ve ever experienced — and the priest talked about how Baptism means that we all have to participate in the mission of the Church.

  11. MikeToo says:

The Holy Spirit is the complete fulfillment of all our hopes and desires. Father talked about the Tower of Babel and how it’s related to our own lives. He discussed how even in our own families there is lack of communion. It is not wrong to want to be like God. It is wrong to want to be like God without God – on our own terms. We were made to be images of God. We say in the creed that Jesus is the only Son of God. We are also called children of God. This is only because we have the same spirit that Jesus has. The spirit he gave us. The Holy Spirit. The Holy Spirit is completely present in all of the sacraments. When we sin, we are like a bucket with holes. The Holy Spirit can come in, but because of sin, will pass right through. Hopefully we made a good confession during lent. That is a great start. Don’t let the holes back into the bucket. We should consider a monthly reconciliation and allow ourselves to be filled completely with the Holy Spirit.

  12. WYMiriam says:

My mother and I participated in a solemn High Mass. For his sermon, the priest listed the seven gifts of the Holy Spirit and proceeded to elucidate them more succinctly than I have ever heard. Short, sweet, and to the point. It was wonderful.

  13. pappy says:

Not part of the sermon, but the Knights of Columbus had a color guard at all masses.

  14. Uxixu says:

Fr. Berg, Superior General of the FSSP, was visiting us in http://www.fssp.la and celebrated Solemn High Mass at St. Victor’s. It should not be a difficult trial to live a good Catholic Christian life but something we should do naturally out of love, filled with the Holy Ghost.

  15. ByzCath08 says:

Father used the homily to talk about the Pew Survey and the decline of Christianity in the US. He spoke about the Scripture speaking of a great falling away before the 2nd coming and that we will become a remnant church. But, we know which side wins and that we need to stay focused on our mission.
