My View For Awhile: Westward Edition

I am on my way home after a few great days in Washington DC.

I love Uber.

Airport Burger review…. Ben’s Chile Bowl…

It’s only after you order and pay that they tell you it’ll take more than 10 minutes.  Really? At an airport?

Chile on it.

Small… okay… took a long time… worth it? Half a shrug.  I won’t go there again.

My unsatisfying lunch was supplemented in the club.

And now to defy the laws of physics again and cause two object to occupy the same space at the same time.

Delta … Comfort Redefined™.

UPDATE

Next leg.

Father… Ben’s Chili Bowl is a local U Street institution.

I understand the annoyance, but people down here consider Ben’s part of the DNA…..
(I, myself, am not a fan, BTW. But I never tell people. :-) )

The only Reagan Airport eatery I’d consider is the Fuddruckers in Terminal B, which contains no Delta gates. In my experience the Delta lounge has the best food of any of the domestics.

There is, as Papabile notes, something about Ben’s, but I’m not at all sure what.

Next time you’re in town give a holler and I’ll point you at my favorite pizza joint.

  3. That Guy says:

Five Guys. That’s all ye need to know.

  4. Adaquano says:

I’ve only had Ben’s from their original U Street location, and that was hit or miss. I’m usually wary institutions expand. Five Guys can be had anywhere, I’d prefer to eat Good Stuff on Capitol Hill. I know of a terrific Ethopian place for your next visit.

  5. Look… the burger wasn’t bad, it just wasn’t all that noteworthy. And food at airports is always more expensive because we are captives. Road-warriors factor that in. That said, it was the “Oh, by the way… it’ll take 10+ minutes,” after paying that was annoying. Were they to give you a little notice beforehand, fine! It’s not the fact of the wait – that’s just what they think they need to make the burger. It’s when they let me know about the wait.

  6. Papabile says:

As I said, Father…. I completely understand the annoyance.

BTW…. next time go with the chili dog. That’s what they are famous for.

I’ve given up on airport restaurants – unless I have about a five hour layover. They’re incredibly slow and disorganized. I just go to the Sky Club, snack on whatever they have (which is getting more substantial) and get a glass of wine.

I figure I’ll save all my eating for my destination. It annoys me to spend an inflated amount of money for slowly served and completely indifferent and overpriced food.

  8. Papabile says:

Same with me, Traductora. I generally eat only at the Admirals or Sky club. I travel enough and get my clients to pay for them because they know they will save money in the long term.

In any case, of note, Ben’s Chili Bowl is outside of security in DCA. Perhaps that may be a reason why they are not so focused on timeliness. I ate at the U street place for years with a bunch of other Republican staffers, and I always had to add about an extra half hour for lunch. It’s just one of those local places that moves at it’s own pace, probaly the same pace DC moved at before air conditioning.

  9. APX says:

FWIW: As long as you’re not flying internationally, you can bring your own food with you. There’s no need to eat at the restaurants there.

Stevie Ray Vaughan… gosh I miss him. What a tragic loss.

    FrZ:

Has anyone sitting next to you on a flight ever recognized you?

  12. RichR: Has anyone sitting next to you on a flight ever recognized you?

Sitting next to me? Yes, a couple times. And someone others on a flight (not sitting next to me) or in airports recognize me, especially if we are going to some event such as the March for Life, etc.

  13. You surprise me in that we have similar tastes in music! I love Paint It Black. Don’t think I’m brave enough to listen to Sky Is Crying on a plane. Especially considering how SRV died. Chills.
