My View For Awhile: Snow Scare Edition

Off again despite the warnings of a civilization ending winter storm.  I burned miles to keep warm.

Honestly, the weather reports and reactions thereto have become ridiculously hyperbolic.  I suppose everyone is trying to cover their posteriors because of something a lawyer told them.

Although it was supposed to be howling, sled dog killing tempts, roads were in pretty good shape. Of course it was also pretty cold: 8F with partly cloudy skies.  Since the flight is so early I figured the flight and crew would be here in town so we wouldn’t have to wait.

Meanwhile, since my last flight, Delta changed the color of their blankets from Obama Red to Hesitant Gray.

I approve.

Short flight compared to the last few.

UPDATE

We landed relatively softly and then waited FORTY minutes for a gate only to be told that it’ll be another FORTY-FIVE.

Waiting for a gate will be longer than the flight.

And of course someone is waiting to fetch me.

Grrrrrrrrr.

Meanwhile an airplane with TRUMP in big letters on the side.  I wonder whose that might be.

So Matins earlier …

Time for Lauds.

Weather reports have been like that for years, ever since people failed to prepare for two major storms, one in the winter, and one a hurricane which was either the previous or following summer, I forget which.

I suppose perhaps you’ve said before, but what are you using for the Office on your phone?

I think it’s purely about sensationalism being what sells / generates page views.

The Weather Channel is a very clear example of it. I follow the blog of a local government meteorologist who, although you’d think he’d rather promote the National Weather Service forecasts, contends The Weather Channel has actually be demonstrated by back-testing to have slightly more accurate forecasts than the NWS.

So it seems they honestly are a good resource, if and only if you strictly pay attention to the numbers.

If you look at their website, however, it’s filled with inane clickbait, 1/2 of which isn’t even weather-related.

I was visiting Portland, OR six years ago in February and it snowed a bit (keep in mind I’m from the prairies of Canada and had to drive through Crowsnest Pass in the Rocky Mountains to get there). They declared it a snow day and watching the “Breaking News” about the weather was comical. Reporters reporting about the “crazy drivers who actually passing other vehicles in these treacherous conditions (on a six lane freeway) ” and the reporter reporting on the “unbelievably massive amount of snowfall *sticks finger into the snow on the bannister*, two knuckles of snow! Can you believe that?! A whole two knuckles of snow. Unbelievable.”

Shopping was great that day. The outlet stores were dead and there were hardly any cars on the roads.

I can’t stand it anymore! A “reporter” standing outside asking people how they feel! It’s December, it’s cold outside! Ask me in July if it’s hot!! Pray for Wisdom!

Part of the problem is people driving on bald tires. And there is no true all season tire unless it’s a Nokian WR.

So glad to have moved out of that stuff years ago. It’s supposed to be cold here on Christmas Day, 60 degrees. Brrrr!
