Belgian religious euthanizers to be investigated

Not long ago, a Belgian religious order which runs psychiatric hospitals approved euthanasia for their patients.

It seems that the Holy Father is going to let the CDF be the CDF.  Let the investigation begin!

Vatican to investigate Belgian Catholic hospitals for deciding to euthanize sick people

BELGIUM, May 9, 2017 (LifeSiteNews) — The Vatican has launched an investigation into Catholic psychiatric care centers in Belgium run by a Catholic order after it quietly approved euthanasia for patients earlier this year.

The Vatican’s Secretary of State Cardinal Pietro Parolin is running the investigation of the Brothers of Charity after the board of the Brothers’ institutions made a decision to allow a doctor to kill their patients who “suffer.”

The head of the Brothers of Charity, Brother Rene Stockman, had strongly opposed the decision to begin euthanizing patients. It was he who brought the matter to the attention of the Vatican as well as Belgium’s Catholic bishops.

Stockman said that he hopes for a “clear answer” from his country’s bishops as well as from the Vatican.

“I wait for the clear answer of the church and that answer will be presented to our organization, in the hope that it will adapt its vision,” he told Catholic News Service May 4.

“I hope we will not have to withdraw our responsibility in the field of mental health care in the place where we started as a congregation with such care more than 200 years ago,” he added.

The Vatican should assign Cardinal Coccopalmerio to investigate so we’ll know in what circumstances euthanasia is OK.

  2. Mike says:

Sounds like Brother Rene may have an awfully rigid attitude!

  3. Atra Dicenda, Rubra Agenda says:

Not euthanizing people is an “ideal” that most cannot achieve in real life when dealing with the psychiatrically disturbed. The Church needs must meet euthanizers “where they are” and recognize the inherent value of those who euthanize for the gifts they have to add to Catholic healthcare. No unjust form of discrimination should be brought against euthanizers who are simply following their consciences and therefore obeying the ultimate authority which is their own mind.

I mean the Eye of the Tiber article writes itself, yes?

    Both comments above are superb.

By definition, liberalism is unable to limit itself.

Nobody expects the [Roman] Inquisition! Well, at least not under the current administration…

    …why not?

Even so called Catholic libs oppose euthanasia. They do not like abortion, either. I do not classify Pope Francis as liberal, but this investigation is not a surprise.

My brain first read the post title to be “Belgian Investigators to be Euthanized.” I was momentarily concerned.

From the bottom up, clerics in the Church for the last several decades have actively taught and fomented extreme confusion, often with glee and an excess of pride.

I for one do not think people should have had to suffer, and die, before wolves in sheep’s clothing begin to get even a slap on the wrist. Even one person is too much, let alone the horrific numbers given up in the failure of the dialogue with “choice” of faux modernism and alinsky politicking. But no one asks me.

The coddling of pro choice politician/priests and religious and their agents, mouthpieces, and means of teaching and publicity by high places hasn’t gone well for the human reality of our communion. They just get celebrated while people die.

What occurs under the moniker “euthanasia” should be named for what it is, before it gets out of control in propaganda, consumption and reassurances in the Church as the abortion culture was permitted to by so many sympathetic to abortion shepherds and clerics. It should be recognized as a movement that seeks to control others’, deprive humans of their dignity, become as gods in power and worship and control (pagan and merciless), and further a wealthy, elitist trendy popular notion, for coin, in our churches, playing with people with the life of Christ in them.

  10. RJBennett says:

I’m just cynical enough to think that Bergoglio will see to it that the CDF concludes euthanasia is licit because it’s “merciful.”

[I don’t agree. Read what the Pope has said about the elderly. I think this is an issue on which the Pope will be unambiguous.]
