15-18 July 2019: East Coast Priest Conference in Wheeling, WV – looks good!

I have heard great things from a couple priests about the St. Paul Center’s East Coast Priest Conference.   This year, 2019, it is to be held at Oglebay Resort and Conference Center in Wheeling, WV, which looks like a really beautiful place.   The speakers will be Scott Hahn, John Bergsma and Ralph Martin.

HERE

I wrote to them about being TLM friendly and right away got a couple of notes back from their Director of Events about what we could do!  Very friendly.

I think I’ll go to this.   Fathers, click, above and check it out!

The organizers have – as an incentive – provided you priestly readers with a special CODE you can use if you sign up, which will give you a $100 discount.

The image they put on the webpage for the conference is a detail from a painting in – if memory serves – the Louvre in Paris, Carreno de Miranda’s Mass of the Foundation of the Trinitarian Order.   This is hardcore in a couple ways.  First, note the liturgical style.  Second, the Trinitarians were seriously bad ass when they were founded.  They were dedicated to the ransoming of captives from Muslims.

    “Oglebay Resort”

Hmmmmmm …. is that where Baywatch was filmed?

Two candles for a solemn high Mass?

The picture is appealing, the style, reverence, and awe are unmistakable. That reverence and awe are what made converts, and sustained the faithful. There is a list in todays N. Y. Post numbering the closing of catholic schools, we are reaping what the spirit of VII sowed. Will anybody wake up?

How the artist captured the obvious belief of the Trinitarians in the most Holy Sacrament of the Altar shown in that painting is remarkable.

YES! And this is what I have banged on about for years now. The Trinitarians dedicated themselves to the hardest corporal works of mercy that there were. But their strength to carry out their apostolate flowed from the Blessed Sacrament.

When I hear priests and bishops rattle on about this or that initiative, I am 99% sure that not a single one of them will mention sacred liturgical worship as the root and goal, the source and end of these initiatives. No project that we undertake will bear lasting fruit unless it stems from and returns to our sacred liturgical worship of God.

  6. Fr Z:

I will be at that conference. However, I signed up before the Z-discount was announced! Alas.

Oglebay Park was the home and estate of an industrialist who gave it to the City of Wheeling along with money to maintain it. It’s a neat place. The older part of the lodge is “quaint” and the newer addition on the back is excellent. It has a small zoo, a big model railroad display, three golf courses, tennis courts, tours of the mansion, botanic displays, and so on. The diocese in which it’s located is problematic, and is without a Bishop at the moment. It would not go amiss if you would conduct a proper exorcism of the diocese while you’re there.

  8. Gab says:

Hopefully Fr Z will either train it or drive to Wheeling. I don’t think I could handle the stress of another flight!

  9. JonPatrick says:

He could take the Amtrak Capitol Limited overnight from Chicago to Pittsburgh then rent a car and drive to Wheeling from there. Not sure exactly where Fr Z lives, but there are several trains a day from Milwaukee to Chicago plus a bus connection from Madison WI.

  10. Gab says:

As long as he doesn’t hire a motorbike, JonPatrick!

  11. Fr AJ says:

This conference is wonderful! I was at it last year for the first time and signed up immediately afterwards for this year. Dr. Brant Pitre was a presenter last year along with Dr. Hahn and Dr. Bergsma.

  12. mrs wu says:

One of my favorite priests EVER is in that troubled diocese……..Fr. Grassi of St Thomas Aquinas Church in Thomas WV. Than whom, it gets no better!

  13. mrs wu says:

And he doesn’t need to rent a car in Pittsburgh….he can stay on the Capitol Limited to Cumberland MD or Harpers Ferry WV, and drive from there….

The See in Wheeling is currently vacant. I have been praying for a good bishop to be appointed here soon. Preferably someone who can relate to good country folks.

  15. carndt says:

Offered to pay for my local pastor to attend. Said he couldn’t attend right now. Some TLM would do him good.

  16. Discerning Altar Boy says:

Listening to Dr. Hahn lecture on any topic is no-doubt worth the price of admission alone.

  17. L. says:

mrs wu, I agree that Father Grassi is excellent- he seems to believe and teach what the Church believes and teaches, and he appears not to favor liturgical frivolity. This explains why he was transferred from the co-cathedral to a small secluded parish in the mountains. I wish we had fifty more of him.

I must disagree as to your travel suggestions, however: Pittsburgh is about an hour’s drive from Wheeling, while Cumberland is two and a half hours away and Harper’s Ferry even further. Pittsburgh is so close to Wheeling that when Bishop Zubik in Pittsburgh announced he was selling the Bishop’s mansion there, I joked to my former parish Priest that I was afraid our profligate former Ordinary would buy it to add to his collection of houses.

I recommend a visit to the beautiful Cathedral of St. Joseph in downtown Wheeling.

Ralph Martin, NOT James Martin, SJ!!!!

    Slightly off-topic regarding the painting:

Can anyone help me to understand the joined thumb and forefinger being made at least three times in the painting (lower left, lower right, and just above the lower right)? Was it just the fashion of the time to carry your hand that way, or is there a deeper significance?

  21. Father Z, you should have a good time when you make it to Wheeling, WV. Wheeling holds a special place in my heart. It was in Wheeling at the Cathedral of Saint Joseph that I learned how to serve the extraordinary form of the Roman rite while I was attending university nearby at Wheeling Jesuit University (you may have heard the unfortunate news of its demise/passing earlier this year). I wanted a Catholic university education and that was my only option if I wanted to keep one of my bigger scholarships (it stipulated that you had to go to an in-state school to use it and WV only has 1 Catholic college). The Jesuits there weren’t all that bad and I had the blessed opportunity to take Latin there one-on-one with one of the Jesuits (Father Walter Buckius, who, unfortunately, passed away 2 years ago).

Having spent 4 years of time in Wheeling, I would be curious to know what the director of events could be thinking when you told him you were TLM-friendly. There are a few churches in the Wheeling area that still have their high altar intact, but I don’t believe that any of them have regular celebrations of the extraordinary form. I take it food is provided as part of the conference, but if you want to stray off the beaten path, some good places to try are Greco’s Italian restaurant, DiCarlo’s pizza (it’s rather locally famous), and for Wednesdays and Fridays, there’s Coleman’s Fish Market.

For those of you mentioning Father Timothy Grassi, yes, I agree he is an excellent priest. I know him from serving the couple times he helped out the extraordinary form Mass group of northern WV when our regularly scheduled priest couldn’t make it.

@hwriggles4 I can think of a few priests in the diocese of Wheeling-Charleston that could take the place of Bishop Bransfield there. Since my parents still live within the diocese, I get regular updates from them.
