Remember… it is Lent

   …and I think a good many people gave up the internet for lent. I don’t know about you Fr. Z, but my hit count is down right now. Although it is the weekend, but I noticed a decline since Ash Wednesday.

   I know many people who have ditched the television for lent and I’m doing this for the first time myself. Normally, I have it tuned in to Catholic television or something benign like a cooking channel while I work around the house or cook. I find myself reading more, and even conversing more with Our Lord, the Blessed Mother, and my guardian angel spontaneously. This yields a post-lent lesson to continue with far less TV, even good programming, after lent.

   Diane: So far, I haven’t been able to track what is going on with the stats, since where I am in Rome has such a bad internet connection half the time… more than half the time… I can’t get even to the blog itself. Pretty frustrating. Still, I suspect that some people are limiting their internet use.

   On the other hand, there can be some good uses of the internet for Lent as well. It is possible to find good spiritual sustenance.

   Groan! Can’t I be let off for today? After all it is the 150th anniverary of Our Lady of Lourdes, whom I have much devotion to. Also we gain a plenary indulgence in the Birmingham Oratory today, as it is dedicated to the Immaculate Conception!

   Fr. Z,

   It sounds like you are getting lenten penance with all the hassles. Technical problems can really try the patience.

   I agree wholeheartedly on internet use during Lent for spiritual reasons. It is how I keep track of the Holy Father’s messages, the calendar, readings, and a number of other things.

   Also, today being 150 years for Lourdes provides an opportunity to share it with people.

   And, Assumption Grotto in Detroit is a shrine dedicated to…..Our Lady of Lourdes.

   The first pastor of the parish back in the 1800’s was so inspired by Lourdes, he had a grotto built behind the church.

   Diane,

   I am seeing an uptick in stats at my crummy blog. Perhaps perhaps mine is a favorite of the recalcitrants and lukewarm, which isn’t surprising considering the author.

   Most of my traffic uptick has been on posts regarding the death of the Grand Master of the Order of Malta, Fra’ Andrew Bertie.
