Dear Father,
I thought I would give you an update on the TLM at Ave Maria Town. The new schedule, announced today by Fr. Robert Tatman, pastor of the Quasi-Parish of Ave Maria Oratory, has placed the Extraodrinary Form of the Holy Mass on Sundays at 12:30pm, Tuesdays and Thursdays at 7:30am, and Wednesdays at noon. It was initially scheduled Sundays at 7:30am, so this places it at a much more convenient time. Please pray that the Extraordinary Form will be continued to be offered at a convenient time in Ave Maria, as there will likely be some hostility for having it at this time.

Sadly, it is my understanding that the Novus Ordo Latin Mass, present on campus since the beginning, will be disappearing. So this seems to be a case of one step forward, one step back.
In Collier County (where Ave Maria is located) the only other TLM is offered at St. Agnes Parish, which is out in the boonies, at only 7:00 AM on Sundays. Appears designed to be difficult to attend for us in Naples.
This is great news for those of us who are planning to move to Ave Maria.

It would be interesting to know how many regular Latin Novus Ordos have
been replaced with the TLM since September 14. I think there have been
more than a dozen. It is obvious that, for many
people, the Latin Novus Ordo was merely a stop on the way to the Traditional
Latin Mass.

It is quite sad that you would think that Bishop Dewane has that Mass scheduled to be “difficult” for you. In fact, he has been a great promoter of the TLM since his arrival in the Diocese in Venice and has directed that the TLM be said in more places including AMU on a daily basis. You may not realize that Fr. Fryar is one of two priests that have to cover all the way from Ocala to Naples each week. It would do you better to pray for more vocations and that more priests take Fr. Tatman’s lead in learning the TLM than complaining about getting up earlier on Sunday morning.
Jon – To clarify, the mass at St Agnes has, if I recall correctly, been moved now to 8am. Hopefully the FSSP apostolate here will soon be getting a 2nd full time priest to support Fr Fryar in covering the entire diocese. This is not the best situation, but remember these are all developments that have come about in less than a year. Continue to pray!

1. St. Agnes is not out in the boonies. Ave Maria is out in the boonies. No one is going to have to drive an hour and a half to get to St. Agnes unless they are coming from Fort Myers.
2. I am a little sad to see that the Latin N.O. at Ave Maria has disappeared – it would have been nice to see at least one retained.
Still, I’m pleased to see that the TLM is now offered thre times weekly in Ave Maria. Bishop Dewane has been a good friend of the traditional liturgy in a state episcopate where that sort of thing is rare.
The Latin N.O. will certainly not disappear. Fr. Tatman said that if an “authroized” priest is unavailable to say the EF, it by default is celebrated as Latin N.O. As it stands right now, Fr. Fessio is the only priest “authorized” to say the TLM, and he’s gone all summer, so it is unfortunately likely that we will not even have the TLM until much later. Fr. Tatman is learning to say the TLM, but his Latin needs some work, so I’m sure it’s going to be a while. Meanwhile, Fr. Lamb supposedly is practicing on his own.
We are indeed fortunate to have such a caring bishop as Bishop Dewayne here in SW Florida.
Roman Catholics in the Ft. Myers area now have The Latin Mass the first and third Sunday of the month at Resurrection Parish in Ft. Myers.
The church is a beautiful setting for the Mass of The Ages and I am pleased to report that on both occasions it was well attended.
We in SW Florida should keep Bishop Dewayne in our daily prayers.

The heart of Collier County is Naples. That’s where most of the Catholics are and where the largest Catholic Churches are – St. William, St. Ann, St. John, and St. Peter.
What’s so complicated about having the only Collier County TLM where most of the Collier County Catholics worship, at one of those four churches?
And what’s so complicated about having the only Collier County TLM at a time accessible to all, such as 9:00 or 10:00 or 11:00 or 12:00 or even 2:00?
Some Catholics have children, and offering one TLM at 7:00 (or even 8:00) in the side Chapel of a small church (St. Agnes) is, we can agree, not exactly well designed to expose young Catholics to the TLM.
Yes Bishop Dewane directed the TLM at Ave Maria. That’s terrific. However, given the well known power struggle between the two sides (e.g., Bishop Dewane did not inform Ave Maria who the Pastor of its Oratory would be until he arrived to consecrate the Oratory), that directive may have been at least partly an exercise of authority, a flexing of muscle. After all, there has been no similar directive given to any of the big four Naples churches.
In fact I have not seen or heard a single mention of Summorum Pontificum in my Naples church, from the pulpit, in the weekly bulletin, or otherwise. But we were treated recently to a letter from the Diocese on the importance of preserving water.
Went to Ash Wednesday mass once when I was in Naples, visiting a friend at Naples Bath and Tennis Club.
I don’t remember which parish, but Jack Ramsay was sitting in the pew behind me.
