An oldie PODCAzT about an Advent hymn.
As I wrote back then:
I decided during Advent to drill into the hymns in the Liturgia Horarum.
We begin today with the hymn for Vespers called Conditor alme siderum, with its variation Creator alme siderum as it was in Breviarium Romanum.
I dissect this hymn and we hear different translations and many musical version.
I ramble a bit. No… I ramble a great deal. We get into an amusing comparison of two Latin verbs… always hilarious and interesting. You Latin students will be ROFL, because that’s what Latin students do with this stuff. No. Really.
Then we veer sharply into Roman agriculture and cooking.
Then we get into a book that screwed up the world, by Jean Jacques Rousseau. And I talk about a book that talks about books that screwed up the world.

I very much enjoyed this podcast. By the way, the anglican New English Hymnal’s first hymn is “Creator of the stars of night”, John Neale’s translation of this hymn. And even has plainchant notation.

I listened! I played (softly as an interlude) Creator of the Stars of Night today as a matter of fact. Your analysis was absorbing Fr. Z., I don’t know Latin very well, but I apreciate your concern for it, your explanations and hearing the subtle differences.
(It also had me thinking about a nice big Kosher dill pickle.)
Hey, we sang Creator Alme Siderum today at mass! I was just meaning to look up the meaning of the words! ^_^
BTW, if you think you ramble, my brain went straight to Kato from the Green Hornet, and Gaius Baltar from Battlestar Galactica. Then I’d hear something about someone walking into a volcano and have to rewind. Oh the trial of being a nerd with ADD…

thomas-I heard [and sang] that very hymn, ‘Creator of the Stars of Night’ just yesterday, when I was at a ‘Service of Lessons and Carols’ at a local Episcopal church! I have a copy of the 1982 Episcopal Hymnal that it’s in! So, John Mason Neale wrote that version, eh? He was quite prolific as a hymn writer!
