Here is an Allegory of Music by Laurent de la Hyre (+1656).
The figure is playing a theorbo, or chitarrone, probably a symbol of musica “artificiale“. They had drone strings and produced a rather symphonic effect. On the other hand, the little bird is probably a symbol of musica “naturale“.
The music is actually readable.
And simply because she is so beautiful.
Thank you Filippino Lippi!
UPDATE:
For St Ambrose on his feast!
By Giovanni di Paolo.
UPDATE:
By the way, we don’t know what exact piece is in the manuscript in the painting. However, so that you know more about the theorbo, here is a great video that shows it from many angles.
The being played is by Kapsberger, who did in 1651 in Rome. The painting is from 1647.

And this piece, with a touch in Piccinini, is a little more groovy.

The Lippi painting leaves one breathless. I am assuming is it an egg tempera considering the luminosity, but correct me if I am wrong. Indeed, the Immaculate Conception!
Beautiful!
Music God made for a reason
Music moves the soul.
Beautiful!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

God bless
Ok, the music is visible, but inquiring minds want to know — what is it?
Beauty is on of the aspects of God.
Thanks, Fr. Z. for the peeks at the beautiful works of art, music and the always enjoyable bird sightings, too. I like the 2nd video – the music is very groovy, for sure.
