Wednesday 1 November 2017 is a Holy Day of OBLIGATION.
For our part, there will be a Missa Cantata at St. Mary’s in Pine Bluff, WI, in the Extraordinary Form
Remember that the Church can determine out obligations in this regard. It is a Commandment of the Church that we are to fulfill our obligation on Sundays and other Holy Days of obligation. The Catechism of the Catholic Church explains our obligation in the section about the Third Commandment of the Decalogue:
2180 The precept of the Church specifies the law of the Lord more precisely: “On Sundays and other holy days of obligation the faithful are bound to participate in the Mass.” “The precept of participating in the Mass is satisfied by assistance at a Mass which is celebrated anywhere in a Catholic rite either on the holy day or on the evening of the preceding day.”
2181 The Sunday Eucharist is the foundation and confirmation of all Christian practice. For this reason the faithful are obliged to participate in the Eucharist on days of obligation, unless excused for a serious reason (for example, illness, the care of infants) or dispensed by their own pastor. Those who deliberately fail in this obligation commit a grave sin.
So, do check your schedules.

When I was in Catholic grade school (mid 70’s-80’s), we actually got off on Holy Days. The Mass schedule was similar to Sunday, with the exception that one of the day Masses was transferred to the evening to allow more people to attend (7:00 – not 6:30 or earlier). Then came the new priest who thought it was too much trouble to do all that. When people complained, the response was: “Well, it’s not a sin if you CAN’T attend.”
Since this is the one HDO all year that I can’t fulfill in the UGCC parish, I’ll be trying to drive to the Shrine of Christ the King, Sovereign Priest. Rush hour, Chicago, what could possibly go wrong??? :D
Tried inviting my dad, (he’s the only one who even pretends to be Catholic at this point,) but he’s not interested and doesn’t think HDOs are important =-\
I live in an apartment for independent seniors. I offered one lady who identifies as Catholic to attend Mass with me tomorrow at noon. I belong to an FSSP parish and she has been wanting to go with me for some time. This afternoon she came to tell me she can’t go because “the cleaning lady comes tomorrow at that time”! I would have called to reschedule the lady but it didn’t even occur to her. This is typical these days in my town, for catholics who call themselves Catholic. I guess I sinned too when I only said, “OK maybe the next time”.
I will celebrate the 23rd anniversary of my reception into the Church on November 1st, and pray for the repose of the soul of the priest who received me.
