The pub that survived the Great Plague is shut down by Covid-1984

Okay… this is getting seriously ridiculous now. It’s time to put a stop to the Wuhan Devil.

From the Daily Telegraph I learned that the Lamb and Flag in Oxford is to close.

That’s just plain WRONG!

Now I’m cheesed off. After an afternoon punting on the Thames there’s nothing for it but a pint with fish and chips at the Lamb and Flag.

Here at the manor in Kent my friends are restlessly pacing the Great Hall whilst muttering darkly about thrashing the peasants to ease their own dismay- the likes of which I’ve never seen. The Colonel sets down his glass, stands up, hooks his thumbs in his waistcoat pockets and exclaims, “Closing the Lamb and Flag is a plot perpetrated by pernicious EuroWeenies and will not be borne. We shall Beat to Quarters! England expects that every man will do his duty.”

The Lord of the Manor nods at Jeeves, who quickly restores the gin bottles to the pantry. The plan of the day is diverted to fox hunting followed by pints. The dark mutterings subside. Groomsmen stream into the Great Hall bearing tweed jackets, Wellington boots and the Lord’s family heirloom, the Sword of Ethandune. Whilst the hounds and horses are assembling on the lawn a gentleman at the pianoforte bangs out Rule Britannia.

Jeeves reenters the Great Hall and observes the commotion. “Right then, are we questing after the Holy Grail or spending the afternoon cleaving heathen skulls in the forest?”

“Fox hunting, Jeeves, followed by pints at the Bird and Baby,” replied the Lord of the Manor. “A pint a day, if well aimed, will keep the doctor away.”

  2. Why don’t the locals do something about this? If they won’t, maybe they deserve to lose it.

Have they checked if the ravens are still at the Tower?

To Anita M: given the location in centre of Oxford its got to be worth at least a couple of million – so a bit of a stretch for the locals who haven’t been allowed in for months. UK Charity Commission regulations do not allow the owner, St John’s College, to subsidise a loss making business – hence the closure. Hopefully a commercial buyer will be found who can keep it going

It is about destroying businesses, not about health.
That has to first be acknowledged.

Mariana2: Good question. At least the shelves at Sainsbury’s are well-stocked with bully beef, salad leaves and boiled puddings, wot?
