Meanwhile,…  white to move and mate in 2.

NB: I’ll hold comments with solutions ’till the next day so there won’t be “spoilers” for others.

3:16 isn’t just in John.

Generation cup (part of the Champions Chess Tour) action continued yesterday. Alireza Firouzja will again battle Magnus Carlsen in the Grand Final. He prevailed in the losers bracket to reemerge in the final. In Division II, Nepomniachtchi will face Levon Aronian in their Grand Final. In Division III, Sam Sevian will play Shakhriyar Mamedyarov. The knockout tournament concludes today Sunday, 3 September 3, starting at 13:00 EDT 19:00 CEST.

For my part, nothing… I’ve got nothing. Except, I think that doing more puzzles has helped me crawl out of my slump.

That was easy: 1. Qxg7+ KxQ 2. Rg2++. The bishop can’t capture the queen being in fetters by the rook on a8, and h6 is not free for the king because the white bishop still attacks it.

What however in that same situation… if black is going to move? Then I don’t think it’s white who is winning; I think it’s black.
    1. … QxB+ 2. Qf1 (preferable to Kf2 3. Rb2+Kg3 4. RxQ) QxQ+ 3. KxQ Rg7 4. Ra5 f6 5. exf6 (white: let’s at least get those pawn if we lose ours anyway) e3 6. fxg7 Bxg7 7. Ra3 e3 8. Re2 Bd4 9. Kg2 h5 10. Kf3 h4 11. (all right, I’m at a disadvantage, but before I move my king away again to yet greater disadvantage let’s go) Rxe3 BxR 12. RxB RxR 14. KxR h3 and while the white king is at time in b2 or so, the rook on h8 renders him completely ineffective there. Black wins. White doing Kg4 in move 11 only makes things, I think, yet worse.
