This is crazy fun. If you really want a ride, listen to it at 1.25X like I did.
One of the things this reveals is the inherent power of Catholic sacred liturgical worship. Another thing it reveals is an inherent flaw in the Novus Ordo. Can you identify it? Some might object that this is the same in the Vetus. But is it?
Father, that guy was wonderful. Inherent flaw in the Novus Ordo: the personality of the priest being too important, which our friends alludes to. As for up, down, kneel, stand, etc., about a dozen years ago I went to Confession at the very nearby (thank you, Lord) Ukrainian Catholic church, where this Irishman sings in the choir. At the time for penance, Fr. H. said, “Patrick, you know what is it pokleen?” I said that I did, a profound bow from a standing position to lying flat, head on the ground. “For penance, take twelve pokleen.” It took me three days — I was aching so much after the first five.
This fellow is great. He says the pastor was talented but I’m quite sure he is far more talented than the pastor. I wish he could be sent to a TLM and report back.
What I LOVE about this man, is his Joy. In one of the Tones in the Byzantine Church sung for the resurection, goes Oh joyful light of the holy glory….
We need more joy. We have the TLM, the Mass of the Ages. We are Joyful that they can never shut us down.
I agree with Danteewoo — this man the focus on the priest. And, that is what he sees, first.
In my continued self-study about The Mass, I wonder (in a certain sense) “Why read anything else besides Ratzinger?” (And his faithful students, of course, like Cdl Sarah, Fr Twomey, etc.)
It is becoming more obvious (and irritating) to me that, as Fr Twomey indicates, the natural, human elements of authentic ritual can be found in many religions ( a strong element is that of being rubrical) and obviously in the EF, but he notes that these elements are virtually absent in the N.O. There are so many options that even a faithful, orthodox young man newly ordained for the N.O. has no sense or awareness that his manner of offering The Mass lacks any conveyance of Ritual, that “This is the Ritual authored by The Holy Spirit and The Son of God, our High Priest and King,” and must be respected as such. The man-made ritual of Bugnini works to prevent it (although it is not impossible).
I feel as if I am being drawn, almost against my will, towards the EF, because the more I study, and feel closer to Our Lord, I get more and more tired of even the small ways that the N.O. is focused on the people, and not on Him.
I wish bishops truly knew and loved the Faith, and so trained their men, and educated their flocks, but I do not believe that they do. They are “nice guy politicians,” who wear their pectoral crosses in their pockets, and in order to be “pastoral” never correct anyone or anything except Traditional people.
If they did know and love the True Faith, then due to Lex Orandi Lex Credendi, The Mass and other parts of the Church’s Liturgical Source, Center and Summit would be offered very, very differently…and this man would have only had 4 things to talk about, and much more to marvel at.
Thank you, Fr. Z, and to all those priests like you. Your value is beyond words to tell, how you all will be welcomed into The Kingdom.
“Ex ore infantium,” however, when the correct formation procedures are followed, a Catholic priest is expected to:
– Chant with some degree of comptence
– Possess as much, if not more, moral knowledge as a registered psychologist
– Possess an extensive knowledge of theology, especially of St. Thomas
– Know Latin
– Perform housecalls and hospital calls
So they certainly are supposed to be “more talented” then any of the evangelical preachers I grew up hearing. Many that I’ve met also are.
So true tlawson.
Sometimes, when the priest says the prayers, I close my eyes to imagine the priest is facing “ad orientem” and then I am focused on God.
