"Cardinal Mueller said that Cardinal Roche is worried about the Chartres Pilgrimage and its promotion of the TLM. He should be more worried about the 400K Catholics who left the church last year instead of 25K faithful Catholics in France." – @DecreviD2BC#TraditionalLatinMass https://t.co/8FIeyqdS6h pic.twitter.com/idfu4zTeSU

French Bishops’ Paper: The Vatican Considering forbidding Traditional Masses inside Cathedrals for the 2025 Chartres Pilgrimage
The semi-official daily newspaper of the French bishops, La Croix, had news on this startling development yesterday: the greatest Traditional pilgrimage in the world (and largest Catholic pilgrimage in France) under threat.
From our friends at French blog Le Salon Beige:
The Vatican may ban the celebration of the traditional Mass at the Chartres pilgrimage. According to information gathered by La Croix:
“…the dicastery for Divine Worship and the Discipline of the Sacraments considers that this annual gathering raises questions of conformity with the rules in force on the Mass in the ancient rite. And would indeed consider banning certain celebrations.”
British Cardinal Arthur Roche, author of the texts restricting the celebration of the traditional Mass, believes that the organizers of Notre-Dame de Chrétienté did not respect the norms. As a diocesan priest recently wrote on X, liturgical norms were not respected for the installation of the new altar at Notre-Dame Cathedral in Paris. But these norms can be flouted without the prefect of the dicastery for divine worship and the discipline of the sacraments reacting:
“The closing mass in Chartres cathedral is a lawless zone. The question of banning this mass seems to be on the table.”
Jean de Tauriers, president of Notre-Dame de Chrétinté [Rorate note: the organizers of the Pilgrimage], interviewed in La Croix, expresses his “befuddlement” and says he feels “overwhelmed” by the “bureaucracy.” He regrets a potential limitation that could “be difficult to explain” to future participants.
The bishop of Chartres, Mgr Philippe Christory, refuses to make a decision and puts the responsibility back on Rome:
“If anyone should decide anything, it’s the Pope”.
In Paris, Mgr Ulrich did not wait for a decision from Rome. He has already indicated that the traditional mass will not be celebrated in the restored cathedral. At the risk of letting the organizers celebrate mass in front of the cathedral’s closed doors? A return to the origins of pilgrimage…
And Notre-Dame de Chrétienté knows how to organize open-air masses. Jean de Tauriers says he’s not worried:
“This pilgrimage began outside the cathedrals. Maybe that will be the case in 2025 – that would be sad, but it won’t stop us and it won’t limit our enthusiasm or our numbers.”
Wow!
Even if this is only a “rumor” – the end result will now be a *greater number* of pilgrims for the 2025 Chartres Pilgrimage. Are these… suppressors really that clueless?
What will it take for these people to come to grips with reality?
How many closed Churches in USA and Canada? Diocese going bankrupt!
Let’s crush the faithful.
There comes a point when I honestly ask myself who it is they are serving? Who is there master? When one fails to see reality and truth in plain sight, I question.
But for the grace of God, there go I.
If I remember correctly from my study of history, the French are a very passive people who love being told what to do.
If anyone doubts that the hierarchy is firmly in the hands of Satan they should give it some serious thought. Pray the Saint Michael Prayer daily for your bishops and all bishops.
Advent is a great time of waiting, and boy have I been waiting for the persecution to end.
If they think this will shut down the TLM movement, they’ll be in for a surprise. It has been tried before, and failed. It will fail again. I guess the best thing will be to pray for those involved.
So pastoral and synodal of them. Fine, another 5 to 10 years and the new generation will put them to pasture and there will be a glorious return of tradition.
Midwest St Michael: “the end result will now be a *greater number* of pilgrims for the 2025 Chartres Pilgrimage”.
In theory, yes but in practice, no. The (happy) fact is that the pilgrimage is now so large that they logistically can’t handle any greater numbers! It’s a tremendous success story but last year they had to stop enrollments before the published end-date as it was oversubscribed, and during the actual pilgrimage there were some slight hiccups, delays etc. due to the huge numbers (and it’s always superbly organised, b.t.w.).
I have no idea what that utter nonsense about the final Mass in Chartres being “a lawless zone” is all about – unless these types consider themselves threatened by the sight of literally thousands of young people kneeling, making the Latin responses, singing same, kneeling for H.C. and receiving on the tongue and generally being the type of kids that a lot of parents could only dream of having. The actual celebration is, of course, impeccable. They probably consider that threatening as well. No – we know they do.
There’s also the corresponding Chartres-Paris pilgrimage done by the SSPX over Pentecost – in the past I recall briefly crossing over with them at one stage. It’s much smaller but of course they wouldn’t have any problems with the Traditional Mass being “forbidden” ;-)
As a seasoned Chartres pilgrim myself, this news is shattering. Could these old progressives in the Vatican really be so cruel as to prohibit the celebration of the sublime Mass of the Ages that is the high point of a pilgrimage for literally thousands of Catholics, nearly all of them very young? And why would they want to do that? Are they perhaps jealous of the deep reverence and love these great numbers of young people have for the Traditional Latin Mass, when their Novus Ordo parishes, many these days sporting just a few snowy heads, are practically empty of the youth?
The growing number of participants in the Chartres Pilgrimage was so great this year that logistically they could barely cope with catering for such numbers; over 18,000 pilgrims in the end we were told! What is the attraction to take part in a three day pilgrimage that is extremely tough physically in every way ? Yet year after year most of us return to repeat what many would describe as a mini Calvary. I can only say that the amazing spectacle of Christendom on the march, with the highlight of the day being the beautiful celebration of the same Holy Mass that nourished our ancestors throughout the centuries, and sharing it all with thousands of other likeminded devout Catholics from all over the world, is an incredible spiritually enriching experience. Your faith grows deeper, as does your love for God and His Holy Church.
If they ban us from celebrating the TLM inside their cathedrals we won’t be deterred. Instead we will celebrate it outside come rain or sun, just as we do in the fields and woods on the second day of the pilgrimage. Pope Benedict XVI affirmed that the “Old Mass” had never been abrogated! The would-be destroyers can’t argue with that.
Hahaha, Fr. Z, that’s a good one, you don’t want my thoughts. My thoughts are unprintable. My filtered comment is I’m embarrassed by these prancing ladies. As a woman, I’m just embarrassed, I find it humiliating that women can be so silly as to think it is appropriate to flit around the ALTAR, like a pair of deranged butterflies. And holding rainbow flags/wings/whatever. I’m sorry for them, how badly catechized these ladies are, but there is no excuse, girls, get OFF the altar, entirely, take your wings with you, how dare you approach the throne of Almighty God and flutter around while the King of Everything Created is there, you are making a mockery of all that is holy with your performance, take it anywhere else you want, but you have no right at all, to be where you are. You dare to dance around the holy altar of God, drawing eyes to yourself, it is shocking, it is inappropriate, it is to make all women look a little bit stupid, too stupid to realize how inappropriate this is. Too bad there isn’t a bishop or priest, a man, with sufficient…faith…to tell you how terrible a thing you are doing, but I’ll do you the favor, stop, just…stop.
That’s my filtered comment, Fr. Z. I have lots more I’d like to say about the bishop or priest who allows this and the other outrages. These people aren’t Catholic. I have nothing in common with such people. They can have their dopey church. What have they to do with me? But it is distressing to see the disrespect they have for God.

A new day, however, has dawned
When the Jesuits were expelled from Spain in 1931, my grandfather sent his wife and sons to Cuba for safety (my grandmother was from the province of Cuba). In 16 years of Jesuit education I only met one priest I could visualize in that Mass shown above. After the second exile, around 1975, one of the old Jesuits from my father’s time in school came to say a Mass for a group of former students and their families and he asked me to serve at Mass. I thought it was strange, since I was in my twenties and had never served in a Novus Ordo Mass. He said “That silliness will pass. We’ll have the old Mass here.”
I don’t know what their founder would say about the current state of his order and his country, but I picture him as in his portrait by Ferrer Dalmau:

In my opinion, the latin Mass celebrated before the closed doors on the parvis of Notre Dame for at least 15000 attendants would be a slap in the face of the pilgrims, knowing that among these 15000 people there are possibly much more than a half of generous donors for Notre Dame’s restitution.
And, anyways, this would immediately draw the french media’s focus on the latin mass prohibition, thus possibly making a lot more pilgrims to consider for the 2026 Chartres pilgrimage.
