Now that Francis has gone to God, our role is to pray not only that that God will be merciful to him, but also for the election of a new Pope who will be … better than we deserve!
Let us pray that he will be truly holy and faithful, zealous to fulfill God’s will in sacrificial love in keeping with Office and sacred Tradition entrusted to him.
Let us pray for a Pope who will bring healing and justice to those who are strongly attached to the Church’s ancient liturgical and doctrinal Tradition.
Let us pray for a Pope who will be a consistent point of reference for the unity of all the Churches aligned with Rome.
Let us pray for a Pope who can facilitate unity with separated Churches.
Let us pray for a Pope who will bring crystal clarity to the burning questions of our day regarding faithful and morals.
Let us pray for a Pope who will shine forth in his words and deeds, as well as in his silences and patience, Christ, whose Vicar he must be.
Amen to that, Father.
I’m praying for a Catholic pope this time.
Amen!
Amen. I will add these petitions to the also fine petition Ann Barnhardt posted, which noted that in God’s excellent timing we have the feast day of St. Catherine of Siena in NINE days. Perfect time for a novena asking her assistance.
This was not without purpose… The first appearance Pope Francis made after he got out of the hospital was that impromptu visit to the tombs of Pius X and Benedict XVI. I’m wondering if he visited them to apologize for the mess he created, to tell them they were right about modernism, etc., and, knowing that he was close to his end, to ask them for help in getting a new pope who will turn things around. At any rate, it wouldn’t hurt for us to ask God to hear the prayers of Pius and Benedict for the upcoming conclave.
Excellent idea Kathleen10.
I think we need to be prudent in how we speak, at this time. We don’t want to scandalize any new Catholics.
And to be fair, a lot of people were attached to Pope Francis (whether that be due to media image or not). And a lot of new Catholics have been surprised to suddenly feel the bond to a bishop or Pope kicking in, so they’re feeling a lot of sadness.
I think it’s kinda touching. I’m always glad to see somebody know a different side of a person than I did. And PF did do some solid things that were good, and he died bravely. His last homily was good, too.
So now we pray for his soul, and for God to send us a good new Pope. Standard operating procedure kicks in, and we trust Our Lord Jesus Christ.

I can’t help but think that this one is uber-important, particularly in light of the departed’s “muchos líos” (thx Google xlate!)
Perhaps it’s a bit soon to start thinking about the practicalities of recovering from the novelties and ambiguities of the past twelve years, but I wanted to share an idea which occurred to me:
In short I am wondering whether the next pope (yes, it would totally depend upon whom he is) might announce that he’s going to crown the “Synodal Era” with a final “Synodus Summario Francisci”. Ad extra it might be seen as a sort of tribute to the late pope, a scholarly exercise to help fully understand and appreciate his œvre; meanwhile it would provide the Church ad intra an opportunity to recast some of his ambiguous acts and outré pronouncements, define them coherently in terms consistent with what She has always believed and taught, and promulgate these orthodox interpretations in magisterial fashion.
Might be a “softer” way of correcting course and could avoid giving the media the opportunity to portray the “new” pope as contradicting the”old” pope…
We need a warrior Pope, someone like Saint Patrick, and surround himself with several dozen tough, like-minded men. And who will make Father Z a bishop.
This might help…

It will be a bad omen if the new Pope chooses the name of Francis II.
We need an authentic Pontiff who has the Courage of Christ to raise His True Church from the ashes of corruption.
The smoke of Satan has all but suffocated the Vatican. Dear God please open the eyes of the blind.
This is no time for platitudes.
Praying for a Pope Leo XIV or a Pope Gregory XVII… but a part of me is concerned about the upcoming funeral and conclave… seriously concerned, giving the state of things in the world right now.
Insofar as USA Catholics may be in tune, there have been three noteworthy revolutions in a three-day stretch; 1. April 19 – 250th anniversary of Lexington/Concord and the formal start of the American Revolution; 2. April 20 -Easter – the all-time and beyond time revolution; 3. April 21 – The end of the Peronist Papacy.
When Francis first came out to see the crowd gathered at St Peter’s Square, and as he reached the balcony, my first thought was ‘uh-oh.’ I did not know him from Adam, but something alarming was immediately aroused in me. Twelve brutal years followed, and I missed Benedict so for all twelve. Francis minimized Burke and Mueller, persecuted Pell to the point of death, never answered the dubia, and seemed always beyond fraternal correction.
I have not seen anyone opine that Francis was a holy man. May I finish by saying I hope the Synodal process, a process without a single parish priest involved as attendee, dies a prompt death.
Amen, Father!
Come, Holy Spirit, fill the hearts of your cardinal electors. And kindle in them the fire of Your love. Send forth Your Spirit so they shall follow Your inspiration. And You will renew the face of the Church.
In 2013 somebody set up a website where you could “adopt” a cardinal elector to pray for. Should we do that again?

Right now, Patrick has all he can handle with Ireland
From your mouth to God’s ear, Father Z!
Personally I am enjoying the sede vacante period. I realize that as a Catholic I should regret not having a Pope but in this case the peace and quiet that currently prevails is a welcome relief from what we’ve been through over the last dozen years.
donato2 – you took the words out of my mouth. I was just thinking: how quiet and peaceful it all is. I feel like a man who has just left the office after a hectic day.
Towards the end, I was becoming a sedevacantist in my heart, even if intellectually I accepted Francis as the Pope. But now I have two or so weeks to be a sedevacantist-legitimately! I’m enjoying the interregnum.
Cardinal Burke has a Novena prayer for the conclave which may be found at the Our Lady of Guadalupe Shrine web site:
I kneel before you, O Virgin Mother of God, Our Lady of Guadalupe, the compassionate mother of all who love you, cry to you, seek you, and trust in you. I plead for the Church at a time of great trial and danger for her. As you came to the rescue of the Church at Tepeyac in 1531, please intercede for the Sacred College of Cardinals gathered in Rome to elect the Successor of Saint Peter, Vicar of Christ, Shepherd of the Universal Church.
At this tumultuous time for the Church and for the world, plead with your Divine Son that the Cardinals of the Holy Roman Church, His Mystical Body, will humbly obey the promptings of the Holy Spirit. Through your intercession, may they choose the most worthy man to be Christ’s Vicar on earth. With you, I place all my trust in Him Who alone is our help and salvation. Amen.
Heart of Jesus, salvation of those who trust in Thee, have mercy upon us!
Our Lady of Guadalupe, Virgin Mother of God and Mother of Divine Grace, pray for us!
