Your Sunday Sermon Notes: Sts. Peter and Paul – 2025

Too many people today are without good, strong preaching, to the detriment of all. Share the good stuff.

Was there a GOOD point made in the sermon you heard at your Mass of obligation for the this Sunday?  It is/was the Feast/Solemnity of Sts. Peter and Paul in both the Vetus Ordo, the Usus Antiquior and that new one.

Tell about attendance especially for the Traditional Latin Mass.

Any local changes or (hopefully good) news?  I know there is a lot of BAD news.  How about some good news?

A taste of my thoughts from the other place: HERE

In Acts 12 we hear about how Peter was imprisoned.  There were four squads of guards (v. 4) and, bounds with chains, he had to sleep between two soldiers with sentries at the door (v. 6).  Not a hopeful scenario in human terms but nothing special for an angel.  However, between v. 4 and v. 6 we read:

earnest prayer for him was made to God by the church (v. 5).

The Church’s pastors need your earnest prayers.  Is there something you could be doing for, perhaps, a particular – let’s say – bishop?  One who seems to be under fire, or somewhat out of it?  Is there one whom you find especially annoying?  It is, firstly, hard to cling to hatred or annoyance toward one for whom you sincerely and assiduously pray and offer penances and acts of reparation.  Bishops and priests are high value targets for the Enemy and they need prayers.  The Enemy hates them in a relentless and savage way.  Bring one down and the whole Church suffers.  The whole Church in Peter’s time was small, but they prayed for Peter and he was miraculously rescued.  The people who prayed became the cooperating instruments, intermediaries of Christ’s providential action in saving Peter for his mission in Rome.

The Church’s pastors need your earnest prayers.  I am mindful of the Seven Sisters Apostolate to which I link HERE.  This is a beautiful initiative which could be joined by women.  Perhaps it could be imitated in a parallel way by men.

  1. Sue in soCal says:

Our associate pastor emphasized the different approaches of Sts. Peter and Paul to proclaiming the faith, but each was a spiritual powerhouse. He then went on to urge everyone to call on the saints for help in our spiritual and material needs.

Attendance was good as usual at our 10:30 AM high mass.
In Peter and Paul, God chose men who were flawed, one who denied him 3 times and another who persecuted Christians. He does this because He wants us to depend on Him and not on our own abilities. This is the virtue of humility, that we realize we cannot succeed without God’s help.

After mass we had a procession on the streets around the church in honor of the Sacred Heart of Jesus, carrying a statue and singing the Sacred Heart litany (in Latin of course). This made up for not being able to have a Corpus Christi procession last week due to weather.

We had a large crowd at our Vigil Mass in our Novus Ordo parish. It was sweltering hot (no AC) – at least 90 humid degrees in the church – but Father of course emphasized the Solemnity of Ss. Peter and Paul – my own patron saints, since my birthday is 6/29. We were sweating for Jesus, and we were happy about it!

Father wore his red vestments, and our sanctuary crew had beautiful dark red carnations, white carnations, and red roses out on the stunning white marble high altar and the side altars.

Father reminded us in his homily that both Peter and Paul were very flawed, sinful men. And that they surrendered their wills to His and, even with their drawbacks and disappointments to God, He made them two of the greatest saints of the Church. And that if God could do that with them, just think of what He could do with us if we surrender to Him! I was encouraged!

After Mass, at least 70 of us had a supper in the church hall/basement of the church, also non-air conditioned, with pulled pork, homemade meatballs and sauce (I prepared both meat dishes), cole slaw (for the pulled pork), frozen fruit salad, watermelon, and soft drinks, courtesy of the K of C. And after that, we walked to our local ballpark, 2 blocks away, to see the AA Akron Rubber Ducks (who were called the Galley Boys for the evening in honor of the local burger joints best seller burger), who won over the Harrisburg Senators, 4-2! And they recognized our parish on the jumbotron!

And then fireworks. I know they were for the ballgame, but I prefer to think they were in honor of my good Ss. Peter and Paul!
