Meanwhile, remind you of anything?

We were out to eat tonight in a fairly large group of mostly priests and a few laymen, including our gracious host, a member of the Archconfraternity from Canada who comes to Rome occasionally to take a part.   The supper was very chatty, very much indeed, especially of the incredibly, unprofessionally slow service even for Rome, but the company was exquisite.  Eventually we did order and the food, when it came, was quite good.  A few shots.

You get the idea here.

More of the idea.

Even more of the idea.  From Britany.  #2 I think.

Butter, anchovy and truffle.

Frankly, I could do that one better at home.  But it was good.

My neighbor’s.

I’m not going to bother posting a shot of the fish, which was divided up into pretty small portions and dressed with a touch of olive oil.  Was it good?  Okay, it was good.  It wasn’t that good.

There were at the end a long list of dessert possibilities.  But even as people chose things, they also brought these for everyone, which was more than enough.   The homemade panetone with zabaglione looked GREAT.

They served people ice-cream with one of these:  this is NOT an ice-cream spoon, even though it is mistakenly called that by the ignorant.

In chessy news: Wesley So Takes Sole US Championship Lead

There is a lot of chess yet to be played, but that headline pleases me. I was up late to review the coverage. *yawn* Coffee….

NB: I’ll hold comments with solutions ’till the next day so there won’t be “spoilers” for others.

Black to move and mate in 4.

Okay, Father, you got me. After 10 minutes of searching spoons online — something I never thought I’d be doing with my Wednesday morning — I am unable to locate and name the misnomered “ice cream spoon.” Please advise. I’ve seen that kind of spoon before but have completely forgotten its function. And the resources online to name it are abysmal. Nobody knows their spoons anymore. Tsk tsk. What the world is coming to…

  2. Life is hard sometimes, I know.

This is the delightful “cuillère à sauce individuelle”.

It has been featured from time to time on this very blog!

    For example, HERE.

And here is an old post about its very use. HERE

    And a newer… HERE

    And HERE.

I have 4 silver by Cristofle for my fancy stuff which I never use, one each from four of the world’s great cities.

I have 8 quite economical in stainless steel which I bought in Paris at Dehillerin, but I am certain they would be found with a search online pretty easily.

We had fresh salmon delivered to our house 2 days ago. $4 USD /kg, We bought 5 kg. Yummy. Fresh caught out of a local lake here in Chile still flopping around.

Ha! I came to the comment section specifically to see about the spoon. Thank you for answering, Father, and taking me down the rabbit hole of a 2013″Babette’s Feast” post.
Sweet SuperTradMum had some lovely things to say; I prayed for her soul.

These are the posts from you about Rome that I love,

  7. Sid: I get it. Of course I don’t go to places like this on my budget. Frankly, the places I go are pretty humble but they often do a BETTER job of it at a fraction of the cost!

Still, thank. I used to post more about my own cooking too. I think I ought to get more disciplined in this when I get back to the states.

    Dear dear dear Supertradmum. R.I.P.

And this blog provides nearly infinite rabbit holes, or “worm holes” of posts it you are so inclined. There is a LOT of information here.

    The spoon thing is FUN.

  9. Jim: hard to get better than that!

  10. Gregg the Obscure says:

Thank you Fr. Z. i look forward to more of your cooking posts. . . . and to doing more cooking myself. i started 72 hour short ribs in the sous vide at lunchtime today.

My Son is a Business Man. He travels around the Country. He always manages to find the good places to eat. If he can’t he cooks in his hotel room kitchen. He like you spends time in Airport lounges. He has been on the lookout for you for sometime. Safe travels to you both.

It’s a sauce spoon?! (Slaps forehead) Of course. :-)
How very French. (And how Victorian.) I love it.
Now I have esoteric knowledge to lord over the plebes at my next fancy dinner (which, if anyone here knew me, would elicit a hearty laugh!).
