We continue our series of vintage rectory bathroom tiles with a contribution by a reader.
Dear Father,
I was glad to see this series revisited. I’ve been fortunate to live in some beautiful old rectories, with some fantastic old tile work, throughout my summer assignments as a seminarian. The yellow tile is found in the guest suite at my priest friend’s first assignment. For the life of him, he could not understand why I insisted on stopping the tour to take a picture.
On another note, thanks for all you’ve done over the years to help inspire and form my own sense of priestly identity.
Here they are! In the rectory I was in for some time in St. Paul, there was a bathroom with this color of wall tiles and pattern of floor times. The sink is similar, too. I imagine it to have two metal legs supporting it.
Yellow! With a green bathtub?

Not sure why but I love this series!
The mint-green bathroom fixture is perhaps one of the greatest legacies of the 20th century.

There must be some rectories out there with a “colour drenched” scheme, given the preponderance of non-white sanitaryware from the 60s-80s. Colour drenching is coming back into fashion lately.
The pink reminds me of my grandparents’ house.
I’m struggling to see how these colors are fitting for a man’s bathroom. I would have chosen black and white if I were designing these bathrooms.
I also think that colorful decor in these older homes is backlash against all the men’s experience of serving in the military in two world wars plus Korea and Vietnam.
Yellow, pink, mint green, and pastel blue are all the opposite of olive drab and khaki, or Navy white.
Can’t really tell from the photo, but in the one with the mint green bathtub, the toilet looks mint green too.
The tub and toilet look blue to me.
