Dispute over the remains of Ven. Fulton Sheen

The cause for beatification of Ven. Archbp. Fulton Sheen has been put on hold.  Apparently, two dioceses have to settle their differences over the final disposition of the Venerable’s body.

The person or entity making the request that a cause be opened, the “Actor”, assume all responsibility for the expenses entailed in the cause, for the duration of the cause.  In this the Actor seems to be a Foundation in the Diocese of Peoria, where Ven. Fulton grew up.  However, in most cases when a cause is opened for a martyrdom, a person who lived a life of heroic virtue, or a miracle, the cause is located or handled in the place where the miracle took place or where the martyrdom occurred or, in the case also of non-martyrs, where the person died.  The Congregation for Causes of Saints can, for a good reason, transfer a cause from the place where the servant of God died, to another diocese.  For example, say that the profoundly holy servant of God Joe Bagofdonuts, born and raised and living and working for his whole life in the Diocese of Black Duck goes to visit his sister across the country in the Diocese of Mountweasel.  Mountweasel, initially would have the right to the cause, but for obvious reasons, the Congregation would have Black Duck handle it.   So, Peoria has great interest in Ven. Fulton, but he lived and worked and died in the Archd. of New York at Lennox Hill Hospital in Manhattan.  At some point the cause was transferred to Peoria.

And so the dispute begins, because… well New York has the body and Peoria wants it.

NB: There may be some more information out there about what is going on, but this is what I have seen so far.

From CNS:

WASHINGTON (CNS) — The canonization cause of Archbishop Fulton Sheen has been suspended indefinitely, according to a statement issued Sept. 3 by the Diocese of Peoria, Illinois, where the archbishop was born.

The suspension was announced “with immense sadness,” the diocese said. “The process to verify a possible miracle attributed to Sheen had been going extremely well, and only awaited a vote of the cardinals and the approval of the Holy Father. There was every indication that a possible date for beatification in Peoria would have been scheduled for as early as the coming year.”

[…]

The diocesan statement said the Archdiocese of New York denied a request from Bishop Daniel R. Jenky of Peoria, president of the Archbishop Sheen Foundation, to move the archbishop’s body to Peoria.

A Sept. 4 statement from Joseph Zwilling, communications director for the New York Archdiocese, said Cardinal Timothy M. Dolan of New York “did express a hesitance in exhuming the body” absent a directive from the Vatican Congregation for Saints’ Causes and family approval. The statement added that Archbishop Sheen’s “closest surviving family members” asked that the archbishop’s wishes be respected and that he had “expressly stated his desire that his remains be buried in New York.”  [So, it is not only the Archdiocese that has reservations.]

Zwilling said Cardinal Dolan “does object to the dismemberment of the archbishop’s body,” but, were it to be exhumed, relics that might have been buried with Archbishop Sheen might be “reverently collected” and “shared generously” with the Peoria Diocese. [We can assume that this means the vestments and other episcopal gear the late Archbishop was clothed in.]

If the Peoria Diocese’s decision is final to suspend Archbishop Sheen’s cause and to assign it to the Vatican congregation’s historical archives, Zwilling said, “the Archdiocese of New York would welcome the opportunity to assume responsibility for the cause in an attempt to move it forward.” [Ah… the plot thickens.]

“After further discussion with Rome, it was decided that the Sheen Cause would now have to be relegated to the congregation’s historic archive,” the Peoria diocesan statement said.

[…]

“Countless supporters especially from the local church in Central Illinois have given their time, treasure and talent for this good work with the clear understanding that the body of Venerable Sheen would return to the diocese,” the Peoria statement said. “Bishop Jenky was personally assured on several occasions by the Archdiocese of New York that the transfer of the body would take place at the appropriate time. New York’s change of mind took place as the work on behalf of the cause had reached a significant stage.”

[…]

Clearly this “change of mind” does not play well in Peoria.

Nor should it, if there was such an agreement.  And, frankly, it is hard to image that there was not.

During the course of the cause there had to have been an official examination of the body of the servant of God, a recognitio, of his remains, their condition, their actual existence, he is in the grave and not someone or something else.  At some point they would have had to hammer out the important question of where the body would be should the cause come to a positive conclusion and the beatification should take place.  If Peoria had the cause, they would have wanted, also, the Blessed’s remains for veneration in their local church.  It is inconceivable that this wasn’t worked out ahead of time.

Habeas corpus.

The Church has a lot of experience in these matters and the process for a cause has been worked out over many centuries.  Just about every imaginable contingency has, at some point or other, been dealt with in the past.  In the case of Ven. Fulton, we have echoes of past experiences.

For example, we all remember from our history how, in late antiquity and especially in the medieval period it was important for a monastery or city cathedral to have the body or great relic of saint.  This could mean serious pilgrim traffic and, therefore, prestige and economic advance.  Everyone would want to travel to the monastery of St. Swithin-by-the-Slough on the Feast of St. Continentia.  A market fair would be held.  Goods would be traded, etc.  For a bit of the flavor of this, try reading the interesting novel by Ken Follet, The Pillars of the Earth.  Monasteries and cities fought over bodies of saints. St. Martin of Tours died halfway between Poitier and Tours. They were about to have a little war over the saints remains, but someone managed to steal the body. When St. Thomas Aquinas died, the Cistercian monks hide his remains so that they couldn’t be swiped. But, as it turns out, a French monk managed to nick the saint’s bones and take them back to Toulouse, where Thomas is today.

Thus, bickering over bodies is nothing new in this fascinating Church of ours. It is unsavory to see, but we have seen this movie before. And it ain’t the Bells of St. Mary.

Eventually this will be settled, when someone decides to give for the sake of the cause of Ven. Fulton. Until then, however, it is entirely proper and for the best that the cause be suspended.

UPDATE:

Fr. Landry has a piece at the National Catholic Register about this.  He adds more details.  It is worth a look.  HERE

HAM RADIO ACTION ITEM! Support HR 4969 NOW!

HR 4969 – the “Amateur Radio Parity Act of 2014” – was introduced into the 113th Congress.  This bipartisan effort would direct the FCC to extend the “reasonable accommodation” provisions for Amateur Radio antennas to include all types of land-use regulation, including deed restrictions and restrictive covenants.

Effectively, the bill will help to ensure that every ham in these USA, regardless of the community they live in, will have the opportunity to practice their avocation from their own homes without breaking any rules or fear of reprisal.  Well… less fear, I guess, given this administration.

Contact your representative.  HERE  Pick up the phone and CALL.  Go HERE for other ways to make your voice heard.

I am also going to tell my congressman that I want him to co-sponsor the bill and that I will be checking from time to time to watch for his name.  If he does, I will tell others that I am pleased.  If he doesn’t, I will tell people that I am very displeased.

Finally! strategy to defeat ISIS terrorists! Fearsome Twitter messages, fatally ironic Instagram photos!

Meanwhile, from The People’s Cube, we have a solution to the problem of ISIS!

I hope the President is taking notes.

ISIL to be Defeated by Twitter and Instagram Bombardment
Dear Comrades,

Comrade Vice President Joseph Biden has announced that the USSA will chase The Islamic Caliphate (PBUI) ‘to the gates of hell’ with a barrage of fearsome Twitter messages and fatally ironic Instagram photos.

Already successful used by the USSA State Department’s Information Directorate against the bourgeois imperialist Vladimir Putin and the Boko Haram in Nigeria, The Islamic State can soon expect to receive thousand of potentially embarrassing texts and pictures from high-capacity online accounts being prepared at the White Fortress.

Throughout the USSA, countless college students have already volunteered to repost and retweet State messages, adding even heavier firepower to the State’s already considerable resources. So many messages are expected to put Caliphate accounts that many officials expect a total retreat within weeks, if not the closing of thousands of account by disloyal terrorist operatives.

Debilitated by shame and unable to handle ironic humor, Comrade President B. B. Obama has told Party officials he expects total destruction of the enemy back to manageable proportions before his mid-Autumn golf season begins in early October.

We will embarrass the Caliphate back to the Stone Age! Social Pressure is the preferred People’s Weapon!!

OBITUARY: Spirit of Vatican II – RIP – 52 years of age

The often amusing Eye of the Tiber had this.

CINCINNATI, OH- A Solemn High Requiem Mass was held Thursday at St. Martura Church in downtown Cincinnati for the Spirit of Vatican II, aged 52. After suffering a progressively debilitating illness for the last ten years of its life as a new generation of priests re-examined the Council in light of Sacred Tradition, the Spirit of Vatican II passed away quietly in its sleep last Tuesday.

“The Requiem Mass really brought closure to the community,” said 26-year old Father David Flannigan, FSSP, who celebrated the Mass with Deacon Brady Schwartz, 32, and Subdeacon Anthony LaViera, 23. “While the death of the Spirit of Vatican II was certainly expected, we were glad to offer Mass for its repose.”  [I would like to have been the celebrant for that one.  Perhaps I’ll schedule my own.]

“What a beautiful Mass!” commented long-time parishioner Gladys O’Neal. “I hadn’t seen black vestments since I was a little girl. And as much as I love the song On Eagle’s Wings, the Dies Irae sequence really got me thinking about the Four Last Things.”

The Spirit of Vatican II is survived by a dwindling number of aging hippies who dropped out of seminary in the ‘70’s, some faded felt banners, and tambourines presently gathering dust in storage.

Do I hear and “Amen!”?

COLUMBUS, IN: Quran verses spray painted on Christian churches. Punks or…?

Sure… right… these words were taken out of context.  Right.

However, I like the fact that some Muslims offered to help clean it up.

Bottom line: Sure, maybe it was a bunch if idiot punks who did this. This may not be a huge deal right now, but this is a sign of the times.

We shall have to see what the investigation turns up.

Prayers for the Sotloffs and for all of us

The incarnation of evil called ISIS (ISIL… whatever), according to the tenets of the Religion of Peace, bravely beheaded another helpless journalist.

Prayers for him and for his family.

Prayers that more people will wake up to what is happening with the rise of radical Islam.

What is going to be done about this?

St. Nunilo and Alodia, pray for us.

St. Lawrence of Brindisi, pray for us.

¿Hablas español? NEW SPANISH/LATIN TLM Hand Missal! And Fr. Z rants.

CLICK ME!

¿Hablas español?

A few days ago, I received a new 1962 hand Missal from Angelus Press to review.  It represents an extraordinary achievement. As far as I know, it is the only new 1962 Spanish/Latin Missal now in print.  More on this Missal later.

This Missal could not come at a more propitious time.

In just a few days, 14 September, Feast of Exaltation of the Cross, we will celebrate the 7th Anniversary of the motu proprio Summorum Pontificum.  Pope Benedict issued this “emancipation proclamation” on 7 July 2007 (07/07/07) and it went into force on 14 September.

This year, 14 September falls on a Sunday.  Make sure that your local celebration of the Feast is especially worthy of this 7th Anniversary.  If nothing else, consider having the Te Deum sung at the end of Mass with the Church bells pealing!

I once heard a friend observe, astutely, that the reason the liturgical life of the Catholic Church had become so barren after the Council and before Summorum Pontificum (despite what one must honestly describe as a near mania for any conceivable innovation) was that, until then, “the new Mass had no past and the old Mass had no future.”  Summorum Pontificum restored the possibility of organic development to the liturgical life of the Church by bringing the past and future together in a new present.

“But Father!  But Father!” some of you are asking, “What about St. John Paul’s Ecclesia Dei adflicta?  Didn’t it give the older form of Mass a future?”

At the time, it made a huge difference.  But there’s no denying that it also put the future of the old Mass nearly entirely into the hands of the very people who most opposed it.  In spite of the fact that the late saintly Pope commanded by his apostolic authority that bishops provide a generous application of his legislation…. they didn’t, in sheer defiance, fueled by ideological malice.

There are reasons why the older post-Ecclesia Dei communities can sometimes seem angrier than the newer post-Summorum Pontificum communities.  Those earlier communities were relentlessly persecuted for their love of the Church’s traditions in a way that the new communities have not been.  That takes a toll.

Wasn’t it in the Archdiocese of Los Angeles where, after Ecclesia Dei adflicta, Mass according to the 1962 Missal was grudgingly tolerated on Sundays but only — for pastoral reasons, of course! — at a different time and location every Sunday.  There wasn’t even a location for 5th Sundays so that no location was repeated.  Today, under Summorum Pontificum, the FSSP has been invited to establish a personal parish in LA.

In the Archdiocese of New York, after Ecclesia Dei adflicta, the first regular weekly Mass according to the 1962 Missal was only allowed on a Saturday afternoon, celebrated at a side altar.  If I recall correctly, the initial congregations at these Masses were screened to admit only those old enough to remember Mass before the changes.  No one under forty was admitted if not accompanied by a geriatric guardian.  Today, under Summorum Pontificum, the Archdiocese of New York has (at least for now) the Church of the Holy Innocents.  At Holy Innocents there are four sung Masses every week!  There are Solemn Vespers and Benediction every Sunday.  There are Solemn Masses every 1st and 2nd Class Feast.  This is a vibrant, active, and happy community with a good liturgical and social.

That is what Summorum Pontificum sparked in New York and at dozens of other places throughout these USA.

I hope we won’t see those darker days again, but we have to be realistic and smart and watch the signs of the times.

Therefore, I circle back to my opening question, ¿Hablas español?

Is your Extraordinary Form community doing anything to reach out to the growing number of Spanish-speaking Catholics in these USA?

If yours is like most communities, I’ll bet you are doing nearly nothing.

I’ll also bet that you have been told, also as if through an organized propaganda campaign, that Spanish speaking immigrants don’t want any Latin, that it is too foreign to them, that they wouldn’t be interested, not to bother, etc.

It seems to me many these people come from places that are far more liturgically (and theologically) conservative than what they will find at any Spanish-speaking community here in these USA.

I don’t need to point out how deeply condescending so many Ordinary Form communities targeting Spanish speakers can be.  Every goofy liturgical innovation, most of them hooted out long ago from even the most liberal English speaking communities), is still foisted upon our Spanish speaking brethren with a shockingly grim tenacity.  They must still endure the worst music, the ugliest vestments, the most embarrassing improvisations.  It has never stopped being 1977 for them.  They are frozen in time.

You know the scene: The Rev. Fr. Francis X. O’Blather, SJ, who studied Spanish for a month in the Dominican Republic in the 70’s and spent six years earning his PhD. in liturgical inculturation in the 80’s, still uses balloons, crayons and crepe paper every Sunday to reveal to his “native peoples” congregation the mysteries of the his version of the Faith.

They deserve more.  They deserve the patrimony which has been STOLEN from them.

Make sure that your Latin Mass community (Ordinary, Extraordinary, both) is open and welcoming to Spanish speakers.

I think that, once experienced, the Extraordinary Form will have a great appeal to them.  There should be also Spanish language materials.  Special attention should be given to feasts that are important in their cultures. Perhaps Father could also preach in Spanish?  Even if he is of a certain age, God wants him to be also an opsimath.  Omnibus omnia factus sum, right?

The new Angelus Press Spanish/Latin Missal will make it much easier for you to invite Spanish speaking Catholics to the Extraordinary Form of Mass.  Buy one for yourself to loan out at Mass.  If your Community cannot itself afford to buy enough copies to loan to people at Mass, you can at least buy some to sell.

Let’s now have a look at this fine new tool of the New Evangelization.

Let me try to post this as a gallery.

Some features: there are a good number of ribbons and the pages are gilt.  The binding is strong and the cover is very good imitation leather.  It is the same size at Latin/ English Angelus Press missal and slightly larger than Baronius.

There is good, traditional artwork.

The missal is a serious spiritual tool.  There are sections for catechetical instruction about the faith, necessary prayers, morning and evening prayer, explanations of all the elements of Mass.  In the back there is a Kyriale for singing the Mass and pages for you to write dates of baptisms, ordinations, religious professions, marriages, etc.  The Ordinary is well laid out and the Propers have slightly larger print for Spanish than for the Latin, which is not unusual in hand missals.

POLL: The Luminous Mysteries – For them or against them?

I saw a post which argues that we should “dump” the Luminous Mysteries of the Rosary proposed by St. John Paul II.  The reflections were based in part on the writings of Bl. Bartolo Longo.  I wrote some notes about the Luminous Mysteries in my Patristic Rosary Project (which I must return to one day).

I must admit that I never use the Luminous Mysteries.

Some people on the traditional side of things have an aversion to them that seems to be on the edge of strange.  I remember one loony argument that, since Our Lady wants us to pray a third of the whole Rosary each day, if we added in the Luminous Mysteries we would be praying 66.6 Hail Marys… or something like that.  Get it?  See those evil sixes?

LET’S BE CLEAR!  Not wanting to use the Luminous Mysteries doesn’t mean that you are against the mysteries they underscore.  Who is against the Transfiguration of the Lord?

Anyway, here is a little poll.

More Boko Haram Terror in Nigeria against Christians

I saw at Cross Map (with the help of Pewsitter) that the mouth-breathers of the Religion of Peace called Boko Haram, who seriously suffer from “Isis-envy” (I’m no shrink but that’s what it looks like) have upped their game right on schedule.

After declaring their own little caliphate, our of “Isis-envy”, they are proceeding to the next logical step for Islamists: decapitations of Christians, forced “marriages” of women. You know… the usual.

Boko Haram Declares Full Sharia; Beheads Christian Men, Forces Women to Marry in Gwoza, Madagali

Following the declaration that Gwoza, a town in the troubled northeastern state of Borno is as an Islamic Caliphate and the recent takeover of Madagali by the Boko Haram insurgents, Islamic extremists have reportedly beheaded every Christian man they could find in the area.

In addition, their wives have been forced into Islam and given in marriage to sect members.

According to a story by Maina Maina of an online Nigerian newspaper The Daily Post, the director of social Communications of the Catholic Diocese of Maiduguri, revealed this Thursday, in an electronic statement to journalists in Maiduguri, the Borno state capital.

According to the statement, the Daily Post reported, “The Catholic diocese of Maiduguri covers the whole of Yobe, Borno and Adamawa States, the three states under strict emergency rule. Apart from the churches within Maiduguri that have great share of such attacks by the terrorists group, all the churches on the major road linking Maiduguri and Adamawa state have been shut down due to activities of the insurgents.”

[…]

Thus, the Religion of Peace.

Take a moment to say a prayer for these poor people in Nigeria and everywhere radical Islamic terror is on the rise. And get your heads into that place where you can envision their style of terror comes to a neighborhood near you.

When will some nation or coalition of nations take these maniacs out?  Will it be European?  Who wants to bet?

Sts. Nunilo and Alodia, pray for us.

St. Lawrence of Brindisi, pray for us.
