OLDIE PODCAzT 18: Dominica “in albis” – Augustine to the newly baptized

Here is an oldie PODCAzT from last year for this Sunday "in albis".

_________

Today is traditionally called Dominica in albis, the Sunday of the white garments which the newly baptized received on the Vigil of Easter.  St. Augustine (+430) preaches about this day, and you can hear some of what he has to say in Latin and English (s. 260A).  I also talk about the Pope’s book Jesus of Nazareth and about the Mass he celebrated today (last year – 2007) in St. Peter’s Square.

    Fr. Z.

I don’t know if this is of any interest to you, but BBC 4 is doing a 4 part series about Sacred Music:
    http://open2.net/sacredmusic/index.html

You can see programme 2:Palestrina and the Popes using the BBC iplayer (http://www.bbc.co.uk/iplayer/search/?q=sacred+music) if you can’t access BBC 4 any other way.

  2. John Miller says:

    Father Zuhlsdorf,

Who is the arranger of that Victimae at the beginning of your podcast?
    What CD is that on?

    JSM

  3. Habemus Papam says:

Mark: In programme 1 what was the title of the penultimate piece, that beautiful version of the Fiftieth Psalm; Have mercy on me O God, according to thy great mercy? I recognised it but missed the intro.

  4. Mark says:

Habemus Papam: Sorry I didn’t see that one, but it’s being repeated again Tomorrow Morning (Monday) @ 2.15am. If you got this too late to record it, I’ll be recording it, so I should be able to tell you tomorrow evening :c). Hope that helps!

  5. Habemus Papam says:

Mark, thats really kind of you. Its a well known piece, beautiful (apart from the blonde soprano; she makes my eardrum vibrate).

  6. Mark says:

Habemus Papam, I think we have a problem! :c). When you mentioned programme 1, I took it to mean the first in the series, which was ‘The Gothic Revolution’. Having just watched that programme, and not having seen or heard any eardrum vibrating blonde soprano, I’m guessing it can’t be the one to which you were referring! Incidentally, the penultimate piece in that programme was ‘Viderunt Omnes – Organum for Christmas Day’.

I do remember seeing & hearing a mixed sex choir in the second programme ‘Palestrina and the Popes’, but alas have no recollection of the penultimate piece… and I’ve missed all the repeats of it too; although, you can catch it on that BBC iPlayer, where there are 6 days left to catch it.

Sorry I couldn’t help this time.

  7. Habemus Papam says:

Thats alright Mark, thanks for trying. (BTW the blonde was on a bolcony with an older woman and two men and the rest of the choir on ground-level). You’ve probably seen Fr.Zs new post about Palestrina and the Popes?
