UPDATE: Le Barroux DVD

A reminder about the DVD put out by the monks of the wonderful Benedictine Monastery at La Barroux in France a long with some additional information.

Go HERE for images from the DVD and to get a sense of what it is all about. I thought it was wonderful.

ORDER HERE.  Here is a PDF the monk sent me with order information in English.

One of the monks wrote to me with additional information:

We hope that the English guidelines for our site will make it much easier to use.

Please take advantage of the reduced price of our DVD during May only, 17 euros instead of 18.50 (postage extra). They are in stock and ready to go, and all have English subtitles (and German, Spanish and Italian).

They are all in the PAL format, which it seems can be played on a non-PAL DVD player if it can be switched for PAL, or on any DVD-playing computer. Someone wrote in: "If the target is computer DVD playback, then format is not an issue as the computer is a progressive scan display and is independent of any framerate requirement. This means it will play perfectly irrespective of the format."

There is no chance of any other format being available before the end of May, and unfortunately it is far from certain that we will bring one out at all, because of the substantial cost involved.

We hope that this DVD will make much better known the treasures we are trying to conserve and transmit: our Catholic heritage.

PS: At this monastery, all the monks who are priests say Mass only in the older, traditional form.

  1. Henry Edwards says:

I wonder if anyone has recent information whether the monks at Le Barroux still celebrate the TLM according to the 1965 Ordo Missae (rather than the 1962 rubrics) which when it was released was thought (I understood then and believe now) by all concerned — publishers, laymen, priests, and bishops — to be the final revised “Mass of Vatican II”.

Of course, we all know now that — unbeknownst then to most, high and low — a certain commission continued in the next few years to work on still further revisions.

  2. J. Basil Damukaitis says:

What is fascinating about this monastery is that if you look at the way the Abbey Church is set up, with the tabernacle seperated from the altar of sacrifice, along with the style of vestments; gothic casubles, servers in albs, and style of vesture, they are very “liturgical movement” oriented. In other words, this is what the Council was originally speaking about. I give them a lot of credit, they have been able to develop and progress, without reverting to an antiquarianism of any particular time period, neither “early Church” on one end, or Renaissance or Baroque on the other. In other words, in order to love the Ancient Liturgy one need not insert oneself into a particular time in history, but be a part of the ongoing renewal. That is what I believe is so impressive about them. Their vestments are stunning.

  3. Antonius says:

From what I’ve heard, the monks still in Le Barroux (cf. Dom Jehan’s leave) celebrate the liturgy from the ’62 books but with the provisions (of which many came to be general norm in ’65) granted to certain Benedictine communities in 1964.

  4. sacerdos in germania says:

    Mr. Edwards,
The liturgy at Barroux for the conventual mass is in fact the 1965 rite with certain monastic modifications or customs if you will. For the private masses, the priests are free to choose the missal they wish to use but as at Fontgombault and Clear Creek, most opt for the ’62 missal.

  5. David says:

    Dear Father and all,

On the day the information was posted by Father Z I went to the monks’ website at http://www.barroux.org/index.html

I had greatly appreciated Father’s little video clip and, having also enjoyed “Into Great Silence”, though I might order the DVD.

Was that Tuesday? I ordered the DVD online right away and it arrived today (Friday)! I am very much looking forward to viewing it.

    God Bless,

    David.

  6. James says:

Where are you located, David? I ordered mine from Massachusetts last weekend, but I have not received it yet.

  7. David says:

    Dear James,

I am located in the UK, Scotland in fact. I sometimes order from Amazon in the US as they have Catholic books not available in the UK(!). It usually take a bit (sometimes quite a bit) longer for these items to be delivered across the Atlantic. I suspect the same is true of your order from the brothers in France, so don’t give up hope.

I watched some of the DVD last night and it is beautiful. You will enjoy it when it comes.

    God Bless,

    David.
