07/07/07 – 5 Years since the release of the text of Summorum Pontificum

I posted this last year, but it is good enough to repeat!

On 7 July 2007 the text of Summorum Pontificum was released.

The Motu Proprio went into force on the subsequent 14 September, but the release of the text itself was an important moment.

At that time, back in 2007, the Official WDTPRS Parody Song Writer, the esteemed Tim Ferguson offered us a tune.  He came up with something based on Pete Seeger’s classic (made famous by the Byrds in 1965) :

Go to the altar (turn, turn, turn)
look to the East now, (turn, turn, turn)
there’s a time for every Mass now, if it’s valid.
The time for banjos and dancing is gone,
dust off the censer, and toss out the bong.
No need for hugging, we all get along
let’s keep our focus together, on Jesus.

Page through the Missal (turn, turn, turn)
remember the rubrics (turn, turn, turn)
there’s a time and a purpose for those words there Pure,
humble rev’rence is what we now lack,
just do the red words and say those in black.
When we say High Mass, there’s no need for crack,
just let your deacon and subdeacon guide you.

Now weed your library, (turn, turn, turn)
use some discernment (turn, turn, turn)
it is time now to brush up on your Latin.
Farewell to Vosko, McBrien, Hans Küng,
deep down you knew that they just peddled düng,
the 60′s are old and the Church is still young
what still subsists is a thing of great beauty.

Thank God for Benedict XVI! When I was ordained 20 years ago, you were persecuted for wearing a cassock and the biretta lay hidden in a draw. We’ve come a long way baby! This is what they call “Back to the future!” Long live Benedict XVI!!!

  2. Rachel says:

Started to sing this out loud, but busted out laughing at “toss out the bong” and couldn’t continue!

    Really funny.

I started giggling (softly here in the library) at the line, ‘When we say High Mass, there’s no need for crack’.
Very, very creative! At least I know the ‘original tune’ for this parody! It was one of my favorite songs of the 60s. Even back then, I knew that the words of ‘Turn, Turn, Turn’ came from the Bible’s Book of Ecclesiastes! In fact, a local deejay gave it a funny name: ‘The Rotisserie Song’! Get it? Rotisseries get ‘turned’!
