Rome: Day 1 – settling back into it

I got settled in safely and soundly this morning and, for lunch, had caprese.

Later in the afternoon I said Mass at the tomb of St. Philip Neri in the Chiesa Nuova.  I will say Mass for the intention of my benefactors, you donors, tomorrow, late afternoon Rome Time.

I met with friends on the roof of the Minerva Hotel for a pre-prandial.  Mine was campari soda.

It was great to see and spend time with Bp. Morlino here.  As you can imagine, there are many bishops here.  Bp. Morlino said that there would be as many as 700!  It will look like a council.

The view from one direction.

My small group went to Fortunato near the Pantheon for supper.  While we were seated outside, a group of Portuguese students with their priest chaplain stopped and peered over the hedge by our table and asked if it was truly I, Fr. Z. I responded in the affirmative. We chatted for awhile and got a group shot or two. Really great young men, full of faith and energy. Portugal needs many more like these men!

Heading back to grab a cab and get some shut eye.  Jet lag has taken hold.

I always look forward to the pictures you post when you are in Rome. I was surprised by how I felt when I got there in 01. It was like coming home! I felt like I belonged there, and of course I do! It was even stronger in 06 when I went again, this time with Bishop Finn and others, to celebrate the 50th anniversary of the establishment of the diocese.
Thanks for renewing my sweet memories again. I’m keeping you in extra prayers while you are there. God Bless you.

Excellent news! I am glad you are there safely. I will pray for your intentions at Mass tomorrow.

Had caprese too. Not like that though.

    Campari is a fave.

“I said Mass at the tomb of St. Philip Neri in the Chiesa Nuova.” I know it well. Well, well enough. You’re just across CVE from Polesi’s! Yum.

    Fortunato!

I just read “The Cask of Amantillado” by Poe with literature students.
He was not so fortunate, was he?

    Godspeed to you in Rome!

This goes to show that even if your hobby is reading about industrial design, you really cannot keep up without Father Z’s blog. I just searched for “Ingo Maurer campari” and found this:
Campari Bar, by Raffaele Celantano, for Ingo Maurer, 2013.

Until Father Z arrived in Rome and mentioned Campari, I knew about only the ceiling lamp version of this light, and I subscribe to the Ingo Maurer newsletter.

That caprese looks sooooo good! Enjoy!

  8. Fr Z, you have the best life. I hope you thank God for it. Which I’m sure you do.

I so very much want to make a pilgrimage to Rome. That altar and mosaic look incredible.

I think it’s awesome how the Portuguese fan club recognized you. It’s like they were star struck. That goes to show that the concern for the liturgy has spread by virtue of your blog!
