FOLLOW UP: Soccer Match for Peace – COEXIST sighting

The Holy Father threw his weight behind yesterday’s (1 Sept) Soccer/Football match for Peace at Rome’s Olympic Stadium.

One of you readers caught something at the Spanish section of Vatican Radio… HERE.  I am not making this up.

It’s the rainbow theme that really makes it special.

Let’s all sing John Lennon’s “Imagine” again, as they did before the game.  All together now…. a-one… a-two….

UPDATE:

This just in…

  1. JesusFreak84 says:

“Imagine a world without original sin / and no savior, too //Imagine perfect people / living life in peace”? Is that how it went? I’m a bit fuzzy on the details since it was before my time =-p

  2. Chris Garton-Zavesky says:

[Intending it as a serious question]: How much of that propaganda is international? “Coexist”, for example, means something in English, but not in Spanish. If I stamp “Adidas” or “Saab” or “Audi” or “Google” on anything, does it have the same text and subtext as elsewhere? (There’s a famous story about Chevrolet, which decided to sell the Nova in Latin America. “No va” is Spanish for “it doesn’t work”

  3. MGL says:

    @Chris G-Z,

This case makes it clear that COEXIST is now a cross-cultural meme that transcends language: The ability to make the English word into (Mohammedan/Peace/Transgender/Jewish/[?]/YinYang/Christian) symbols is just too symbolically powerful, for those who are into that kind of thing.

What IS that ‘i’ symbol, though?

    [iTunes? iPhone?]

  4. Muv says:

The “i” symbol – self-love, out and out narcissism? There is a little white heart in the dot at the top.

  5. ejcmartin says:

I must admit though that was a nice header by his holiness.

  6. Unwilling says:

The second symbol is (etymologically speaking) anti-nuclear weapons.
The third symbol is genitalia equivocata.
    The color scheme is indifference.

  7. ‘Imagine’ Revised as a Reflection on the Faith and Social Doctrine of the Church

    By Fredi D’Alessio

    Imagine there’s a Heaven,
    It’s easy if you try,
    A hell below us,
    Above us Holy sky,
    Imagine all the people
    Living for God’s way ~

Heaven and hell do exist, as does a spiritual warfare between good and evil. What is good and holy comes from God (from heaven above) and what is evil comes from Satan (from hell below). We live for what pleases God (not to have everything our way; but his).

    Imagine there’s no hatred
    It isn’t hard to do,
No cause to kill or die for,
    And one religion too,
    Imagine all the people
    Living in Christ’s peace ~

Though we would gladly die for God there would be no cause to. He would have no enemies, nor would we. All people would be united by their common faith in the one Triune God and confess Jesus as Lord and Savior. There would be one Church of God, the truly universal Church of Christ Jesus sent forth to the whole world by Him for its conversion to the Gospel.

You may say I’m a dreamer
But I’m not the only one
I hope someday you’ll join us
And the world believes as one

Every Christian should have the same desire for unity as expressed by Jesus in his prayer to the Father: “I do not pray for these only, but also for those who believe in me through their word, that they may all be one; even as thou, Father, art in me, and I in thee, that they also might be in us, so that the world may believe that thou has sent me.”(Jn 17:20-21)

    Imagine shared possessions,
    I wonder if you can,
No deeds of greed, no hunger,
    A brotherhood of man,
    Imagine all the people
    Sharing all the world ~

In the beginning God entrusted the earth and its resources to the common stewardship of mankind to take care of them, master them by labor, and enjoy their fruits. The goods of creation are destined for the whole human race. Although, mankind is called to respect both the universal destination of goods and the right to private property, the right to private property does not do away with the original gift of the earth to the whole of mankind.
(There is but one Owner of the World)

You may say I’m a dreamer,
But I’m not the only one,
I hope someday you’ll join us,
And the world will love as one

And he said to him, you shall love the Lord your God with all your heart, and with all your soul, and with all your mind. This is the great and first commandment. And a second is like it; you shall love your neighbor as yourself. On these two commandants depend all the law and the prophets. (Mt 22:37-40)
(Love of neighbor cannot be separated from love of God)

    GOOOOOOLLLLLL!

  9. janeway529 says:

Fr. Z, you do realize that in Italy, the rainbow/rainbow flag is the symbol for the family?

  10. Suburbanbanshee says:

I’m pretty sure the i-heart represents “I am the licensed character Plim-Plim.”

  11. Venerator Sti Lot says:

    janeway529,

Tell us more! There’s no hint of this in the Italian Wikipedia “Arcobaleno” article, its English equivalent, or the specialized English articles “Rainbow in culture” and “Rainbow flags”, which have no Italian equivalents. Is this just Wiki inadequacy and/or bias? (I have not checked article histories for any wars over including and removing such information.)

Ah, Romance (languages, that is): ‘coexistencia’, ‘coessistenza’…

  12. acardnal says:

I hope someone in ISIS leadership watched the cartoon video. They don’t seem too interested in “coexisting” with anyone who is not one of them!

  13. MGL says:

Oh, that ‘i’ symbol? Apparently it was altered from the Plim-Plim original. Rorate has the before and after pictures, with the “before” sourced from the Plim-Plim Facebook page.

What was the original dot on the’i’? Oh, just a pentagram.

  14. Iconophilios says:

I could not stomach even 30 seconds. I actually felt like vomiting.

  15. Aspie says:

Coexist? And yet the Second Vatican Council’s Lumen Gentium says in #14 “In explicit terms He Himself affirmed the necessity of faith and baptism and thereby affirmed also the necessity of the Church, for through baptism as through a door men enter the Church. Whosoever, therefore, knowing that the Catholic Church was made necessary by Christ, would refuse to enter or to remain in it, could not be saved.” If someone wishes truth to coexist with error they unwittingly encourage the damnation of non-Catholic souls.

  16. Reconverted Idiot says:

HERE is the original image, with the ‘i’ as it appeared prior to a slight judicious censoring by I don’t know who but apparently for the sensitivities of the faithful (such un-PC discrimination against pagans and wiccans everywhere!!!) How could they undermine the ‘up-to-dateness’ of such expressions of ‘belief in peace’ which all men are encouraged to foster? I am disappoint: keep the pentagram, Satanists have rights too!!!

  17. Venerator Sti Lot says:

    MGL and Reconverted Idiot,

Thanks! The pentagram has a long history of ‘occult’ (including ritual magical) use, but it has also been used innocently, historically – I take the great Middle English poem, ‘Sir Gawain and the Green Knight’ to include examples of this, for instance.

Is it, like the rainbow, a symbol awaiting rescue from its hijackers? (And where does this cartoon come in the spectruum of use?)

  18. goodone121 says:

I can’t believe they would go behind the Holy Father’s back, like this. His heart will be broken.
