When I was very young I marched in a Veteran’s Day (or Memorial Day – it is that long ago that I don’t remember) parade, in a Cub Scout squadron. It was a beautiful, sunny, dusty green Northeastern day in the kind of town on Long Island where almost nobody thinks anyone will ever be a hero (I wasn’t, but three miles away a future Medal of Honor winner’s parents were growing up) and I never imagined I would be a veteran myself one day. Of the millions of Americans who went overseas in a war, I had probably close to a one in a hundred easiest time of it – a few random shots heard in anger, and a reasonable level of danger from the local and untrustworthy populace, but no rats, no hunger, no lice, no repeatedly whizzing bullets. For me – and only for me, I don’t speak for veterans of other wars, or even veterans of my war who were in greater danger – the nice thing about Veterans Day is the realization that a few – not a majority, obviously, but still a substantial number – of people who are blessed to live in the United States actually honestly care and appreciate what others have done for them.
I have lived long enough to see thousands – and I mean that word, thousands, literally – of examples of unappreciated sacrifice – both in violent and non-violent situations – and it is nice to see the exceptions to the rule (that is, appreciated sacrifices) every once in a while. So best wishes on this Veteran’s Day and this Armistice Day.

As an Army brat, I was raised to always remember the significance of the 11th month, 11th day and the 11th hour.
As my father spent two tours in Vietnam, while I only had one, it became even more important for me and I always asked in the various Catholic schools I taught at for the entire school to remember this minute of silence.
This day, I always remember the friends in my unit, my father, his father, and my nephew – all Veterans and all who were proud to serve.

Our veteran’s day was celebrated at our local schools last Friday, because today the schools were closed.
The program was beautifully done with Presentation of the Colors, band and choir pieces, a guest speaker, the showing of the youtube video, Angel Flight. Then the kids hosted a lunch for the vets.
