Can you believe how ridiculous this is getting?

Can you believe how ridiculous this is getting?

At a guitar shop, teenagers complained that a guitar with the Confederate flag was on display! HERE

union jack guitar

Ummm… no, kids.  Fail.

Thank you, American educators!  Well done.

And then there was the story in the American Mirror about the guy who called 911 because someone was selling Confederate memorabilia at a flea market.  The emergency? He was offended!

It gets worse.  The police dispatched a car!

This is getting ridiculous.

It’s possible the second item from the American Mirror may have alluded to a valid point – albeit one they never bothered to specify. It didn’t have anything to do with the confederate flag, so much as with some Nazi memorabilia – and the person who seemed to be offended, according to the American Mirror story, had a grandmother who bore the numbers of a nazi concentration camp on her body. That would be the speculation I gather from the American Mirror article, and this one at the link below which gives a better visual of where the “offense” appears to be centred.
Wallingford police called after Nazi, Confederate merchandise found at flea market.

Maybe one reason they can’t call it a crime is they can’t discern with any degree of certainty whether people were buying the items for historical reasons. Personally, I don’t think I’d want to have any nazi memorabilia hanging around here – It would clash with several framed photos I have on the wall . . . photos of some of Canada’s best and bravest who gave their lives in the line of duty.

Not surprising in a nation that elected an utterly unaccomplished naked marxist as its emperor.

  3. APX says:

It even says Union Jack on the card!

If you think this is ridiculous (and it is) just wait (not long I’m sure) until it’s the Crucifix they are coming after. I thought what Cardinal George said was overwrought until the events of the last few days – now I’m convinced it was prophetic.

  5. Imrahil says:

As for the first story: “ridiculous” is the precise description.

As for the second, obviously no police action against Confederate flags and memorabilia being shown is called-for absent any law banning them. I do not think, though, (here’s a German speaking, § 86a of our penal code comes to mind…) that there is any principle in natural law that would hinder legislators from enacting such a law, if they desire to do so.

In the meantime, it is obvious that a great many good soldiers fought valiantly and bravely, and apparently with sincere conviction that their cause was just, for this manifestly unjust cause (for the pivotal issue was slavery). In that sense, I’m going to quote one Catholic priest who was on their side as well:

(you know what the quote’s going to be, right?)

    Furl that banner. Softly. Slowly.
Treat it gently: it is holy,
for it droops above the dead.
Touch it not. Unfold it never.
    Let it droop there, furled forever;
for its people’s hopes are dead.

  6. Andrew says:

Maybe they are on to something. Technically speaking historically haven’t the British been more oppressive of more people around the world than the Confederates? We should probably ban it just in case.

  7. iPadre says:

I could care less about the Confederate flag either way, but, we have become a nation intolerant of everything but sin. Those who scream tolerance will soon take away free speech. St. Lawrence, deacon of Rome – Pray for us!

Welcome to the Communists States of America. Ah, yes, the communists are in power and this is what you get from its sheeple.
It’s just a matter of time before these little red-army misfits start to rat-out our parish priests for speaking the truth about the immoral issue that our lovely supreme court shoved down our throats recently!

Not even an Irishman would deliver such a protest.

  12. Cosmos says:

Seems a little strange to be calling this “ridiculous,” as if having the proper, educated, democratic disposition from a previous era has any relevance anymore. It almost feels like scoffing at those guys who wear the flat-brimmed caps, when everyone knows adult baseball cap brims should be curved! We stand off at a distance shaking our heads as the progressives swallow up ground. When they turn their attention to us, we tuck tale and run away, because they really will bite…

To be honest, I’m not sure we Catholics have ever really understood the full implications of turning our culture over to the whims of a constantly shifting majority. The 19th century popes were prophets.

  13. rtjl says:

Confederate flag. Oh No. This is far worse. This signals the beginning of a British Invasion! Oh, wait. That was 50 years ago. Never mind.

  15. Kerry says:

Torch, after “beyond me”, is there an unwritten “therefore”? We hope not. If there is, are you making your own feelings the standard to which the standard bearers must align? (I had a very lefty at work friend once who commonly said, “I can’t think of any reason why” followed by “own this”, “oppose that” and so on. When he once said, “The French don’t…”, he could not answer my question, “Why is what the French do the standard?”)
Is positive law now just “Feelings!” ? Just”B as in B, S as in S” ?

  16. Kerry says:

In the vernacular, this flag nonsense is just more from the head of the fish, “Get Whitey!”

  17. frjim4321 says:

If nothing else the recent events around the disgraced Confederate flag demonstrate that symbols are very powerful.

  18. Gerard Plourde says:

    Dear Imrahil,

Thank you for the thoughtful post. If only Fr. Ryan’s wise counsel had been remembered and heeded by the generation who appropriated the flag of the Army of Northern Virginia in 1948 and intentionally made it the symbol of groups dedicated to preserving segregation, denying Americans their voting rights based on their color and perpetrating acts of violence to preserve injustice. It is this later history that defiled the flag that brave men rallied under in a war that contested for a nation’s conscience.

  19. “Why anyone would want to fly a flag of sedition and rebellion at all is beyond me.”

Some of them may be still be like my 1950s classmates at a high school whose sports teams were the “Rebels” and the Confederate flag was ubiquitous–adorning walls of rooms, yearbooks, class rings, cheerleaders’ outfits, etc–and everyone stood and waved Confederate flags whenever the hand played “Dixie” at football games. At that time, none of us (so far as I was aware) associated any of this with racism or segregation; it simply expressed solidarity and pride in school and homeland.

It was a bit later beginning in the 1960’s these symbols that had seemed wholesome in our innocent youth were co-opted as symbols of defiant racism and intolerance. Now, a half century later, most (though perhaps not all) of the people who wave that same flag are expressing decidedly unwholesome attitudes. And most (though perhaps all) of us know that these former expressions of Southern pride now have very different connotations than those we first knew.

  20. Sonshine135 says:

I would like to say I am amazed by these reactions, but everything in existence seems to be paired down to soundbites. Christianity, for instance, needs no Bible. After all, love is love. The American Civil War now breaks down to be nothing more that righteous American North versus the evil, slave-holding South. Who cares about truth and greater understanding when we can simply trivialize everything.

I am saddened for children and their future, I imagine all of the lost souls searching for happiness and never finding it. I also imagine the pleasure it brings the devil to take those souls from God. I have begun to pray the Prayer to St. Michael and the Fatima prayer of the Rosary many times a day.

  22. SKAY says:

The city council in Memphis has voted to remove a large memorial statue of a Confederate general and sell it. They also voted to dig up his grave and also his wife’s and move the remains.

The mayor of New Orleans is talking about removing several large well known memorials. Some are talking about removing memorials in Washington DC.
It is beginning to remind me of some things happening in the middle east.

Unfortunately you have a point, Kerry. Divide and conquer has been the goal of
a particular ideology for years in this country. They just needed a certain set of
circumstances in place to succeed. W e also know Christianity (and the cross) is also
in their crosshairs. The Catholic Church in particular.
Along with the circumstances it also takes large groups of people willing to be manipulated.

  24. JesusFreak84 says:

  25. Gerard Plourde says:

    Dear Henry Edwards,

While the students you knew in the 1950’s most likely were unaware of the devisive use of the flag, its original purpose had already been co-opted explicitly by the Dixiecrats in 1948 in support of segregation and the denial of full citizenship rights to Black people (some examples – disparate literacy tests imposed on people of color seeking to vote, laws forbidding interracial marriage, segregated, inferior schools for people of color being). They rose in reaction to President Truman’s desegregation of the armed forces. Georgia incorporated the flag of the Army of Northern Virginia into its state flag specifically to protest the desegregation ruling in Brown v. Board of Education. It was at this time as well that it appeared in protests against desgregation at the University of Mississippi.

It is sadly these uses that now taint the flag. Perhaps, after a period of retirement, these associations still fresh in the living memories of many will be muted.

The United States hardly has any history, and yet we’re going for “damnatio memoriae” and digging up cemeteries to get rid of wrongdead.

    Unbelievably stupid.

@ Suburbanbanshee: Wrongdead. I’ll have to steal that one.

“We are quickly headed to our own version of the French Revolution in this country, and I don’t think the 2nd amendment is going to save us.”

No, look at the Cultural Revolution. Obama is trying to smash the ‘four olds’. He’s copying right out of the old Maoist playbook – including digging up graves, and desecration. If you’re not already prepared, get ready. Store anything you possibly can – and print it off! It would not take much for stuff in the cloud to ‘disappear’ and be deleted. If you don’t have it in your hands, you don’t have it!
