A prayer before connecting to the internet

CATEGORY: SESSIUNCULA — Fr. John Zuhlsdorf @ 12:20 pm

Some years ago there was much chat about having St. Isidore of Seville (+636) proposed as the patron saint of the internet.  I was asked to write a prayer people could recite before using the internet.  It seemed to me that that was a good idea.

I wrote the prayer in Latin and submitted it, with a translation into English, to a bishop who gave it his approval.

This prayer is all over the same internet now (both with and without attribution), which amazes me a little.

The experience prompted me to revisit this “internet prayer”, seek some additional language translations, and post them all online in one place.  Here is the prayer.  These days most Latinists refer to the “internet” as interrete, n.

You will want to know why some people proposed St. Isidore for this role.

I think it was probably because his most notable work, the Etymologiae, a massive encyclopedic work of 448 chapters in 20 volumes indexing just about everything people thought it was important to know at the time, was rather like a primitive database.    You can pray to any saint in this matter, of course, and nothing official about a patron for the internet has been handed down from the Congregation for the Causes of Saints, which is the competent dicastery of the Holy See in all issues having to do with patron saints.  People wanted a prayer for St. Isidore, and I wrote one, but you should feel free to change the name to whatever saint you prefer.  Others have proposed St. Maximilian Kolbe (+1941), St. Bernadine of Siena (+1444), St. Rita of Cascia (+1457), and the Archangel Gabriel (still around).

Please know that I am quite happy for people to use this prayer.  I kindly ask that you give attribution.   Also, if you would like to offer a translation into a language missing from those below, please send it.  I am waiting for a translation in Tamil right now.

    LINGUA LATINA

    Oratio ante colligationem in interrete:
    Omnipotens aeterne Deus,
qui secundum imaginem Tuam nos plasmasti
et omnia bona, vera, et pulchra,
praesertim in divina persona Unigeniti Filii Tui
Domini nostri Iesu Christi, quaerere iussisti,
    praesta, quaesumus,
Amen.

A prayer before logging onto the internet:
    Almighty and eternal God,
who created us in Thy image
and bade us to seek after all that is good, true and beautiful,
especially in the divine person of Thy Only-begotten Son, our Lord Jesus Christ,
    grant, we beseech Thee,
that, through the intercession of Saint Isidore, Bishop and Doctor,
during our journeys through the internet
we will direct our hands and eyes only to that which is pleasing to Thee
and treat with charity and patience all those souls whom we encounter.
    Through Christ our Lord.   Amen.

    2. Dear Father,

What a wonderful prayer! I cannot thank you enough for the work you are
doing for Holy Mother Church. I especially appreciate that you do not diss (a
wonderful word we have from the Black community) the
Traditional Mass (1962 liturgical books) and Sacraments, which are very dear
to my heart. I publish a monthly newsletter: Una Voce Arkansas Ozarks

    3. Nice prayer, nice to see that someone still values Latin.

    4. Thank you very much for this wonderful prayer.

I am also wishing to print copies of it to distribute them to anyone
who wishes to have it. I am also taping it at at every computer station
(no, I won’t get in trouble, as we own the business—which is really owned
      by God).

Before I do, however, did I correct make the proper attribution that you
have requested? Also I ask your permission to replace the Thee, Thine to
You and Your? (Some of our secular-thinking staff already think we went off
the deep end by becoming Catholics (at our age) and the Thee, Thou, and Thine
talk may put them off. We seek to be inclusive, rather than alienating!)

A prayer before logging onto the Internet
      by Fr. John Zuhlsdorf

Almighty and Eternal God, who created us in Your Image

and bade us to seek after all that is good, true and beautiful,
especially in the divine person of Your Only-begotten Son,
      Our Lord Jesus Christ.

      Grant, we beseech You,

that, through the intercession of Saint Isidore, Bishop and Doctor,
during our journeys through the Internet
we will direct our hands and eyes only to that which is pleasing to You
and treat with charity and patience all those souls whom we encounter.

      Through Jesus Christ, Our Lord.
      Amen

I await your permission. Thank you again.

    6. Is it in Turkish anywhere?

    7. Sieglinde: All the versions I have are posted. I would be very pleased were some trustworthy person to prepare a translation in Turkish and in other languages and send them to me, especially with an audio file of them being read aloud.

    8. This is a very nice prayer and I will start using it.

A while back, I read that the Vatican had the 3 Archangels for their patron Saint. I don’t know if that is true or a joke.

Would you consider asking someone in the department of “Congregation for the Causes of Saints, which is the competent dicastery of the Holy See in all issues having to do with patron saints.” (copied) if we could please have an official patron Saint?

Thank you for this prayer and this web-site. Also I’m very excited about the “Mass” news.

    11. Thank you for a wonderful prayer. Too many people get into the internet to learn evil (pornography, satanism, violence, laziness, etc). Perhaps a sentence to pray for creators of messahes and spams could be added.

May be somewhere: Bless those posting messages so that they do not corrupt the readership in any way, Lord. . .

The Swahili translation is interesting. I would modify the following:

Uliyetuumba kwa umbo wako (Umbo wako =mfano wako). .

Na kutuamru tutafute kilicho kizuri (kilicho chema. . )

Kwa uombezi wa Mtakatifu Isidore ( Kwa maombezi ya mtakatifu isidore. .

. . tuelekeze mikono yetu na macho yetu (tuelekeze mikono na macho yetu. . )

And for the added verse :
Uwabariki wale waandikao habari wasiwaingize wasomaji katika mawazo potofu, ee Bwana. .

      Laudatur Iesus Christus

    12. I find this to be a wonderful prayer. May be we could remember those uploading information on the net; that they might consider the possible damage to the sould who might read those messages (here I have in mind increasing postage of pornography, satanistic messages, movies condoning violence, blasphemous messages . . etc)

Live long to write more prayers father.
