Franklin Graham to Cardinal Dolan: ‘take a moral stand’ against Gov. Cuomo
January 30, 2019 (LifeSiteNews) – Protestant evangelist Franklin Graham, president of the Billy Graham Evangelistic Association, took to Twitter urging New York’s Cardinal Timothy Dolan to “Take a moral stand.”
[… The tweets follow…]
The Catholic Church is discussing as to whether @NYGovCuomo should be excommunicated from the church for signing the state’s new abortion bill. This law allows for the murder of unborn children up until the day of their birth. 1/3 https://t.co/Rml0pYHQFS

Then…
I call on my friend @CardinalDolan to take a moral stand. Whether it moves the governor’s calloused heart or not, it will have a great impact on not only the church in New York, but on the church worldwide. It’s about standing for right over wrong, good over evil. 2/3

Then…
Albany Bishop Edward Scharfenberger said to @FoxandFriends about the new abortion law, “I don’t see it as something to celebrate…the kind of procedures that now are possible in New York state, we wouldn’t even do to a dog or a cat…It’s torture.” 3/3

Not that I would expect much other than the path of least resistance, but what would Cardinal Dolan’s role be in this situation, even if he were so inclined? Since Cuomo is the governor and Albany is the capital, wouldn’t Bishop Scharfenberger be “his” bishop and so any action flow from him on up right around Cardinal Dolan? Or is the point simply that the Archbishop of New York (whoever that may be at any given time) is the most influential member of Church leadership in the US and so he should be saying something, even if he can’t actually do anything?
As I understand it, because Cuomo spends so much time in NY City as governor, either bishop could take action against him. I suppose any bishop could declare him excommunicated, but it’s normally left up to their own jurisdictional bishop.
Does anyone notice the dynamic at play here? Surely, in as yet only an embryonic form: evangelical shames Catholic Cardinal to act more … Catholic! And while this effect might very well imperviously bounce off the Cardinal, the evangelical, who still knows, loves, and serves God with all his heart, all his mind and all his strength, might discover that he is losing something as the “Mother Church” sinks like the Titanic. Gasp! Even after 500 years, Protestants might understand that the bulwark and pillar of the Church has been sustaining them all along, even with their schisms and heresies. Hence, “No one enters salvation except through the Church.” What a revelation for them! This may … MAY … be how God reunites us. But lasting changes happen slowly. Don’t hold your breath.
Funny – I was on my way to Mass Sunday and the thought popped into my head – “Was Timothy Dolan still Cardinal of the Archdiocese of New York?”. It was not in relation to the Cuomo mess, I just haven’t heard anything from him since the Yankees almost made the World Series a couple of years ago. This prince of the Church has become a non-entity in his own city.
Gone are the days of Cardinal O’Connor who was often on the cover of the Daily News and/or the New York Post defending (or at least explaining) Catholic teaching.
I believe Cuomo’s legal residence is still in Queens, so Bishop Nicholas DeMarzio of the Diocese of Brooklyn, should be the shepherd who provides him with guidance back to the Truth.

Non-Catholic Christians, as well as so many Catholics, are pleading – and praying – for a cure for the paralysis of our episcopate.
Gina Raimundo too (gov of RI, heading the same direction)
There is good news from Tennessee! Our new governor Bill Lee, who campaigned heavily on his Christian faith, is promoting a bill to ban abortion once a fetal heartbeat is detected, as early as six weeks into pregnancy. He said, “I would support any bill that reduces the number of abortions in the state.” The article in the newspaper that carried this story said Tennessee is one among several states considering “heartbeat bills”. According to the report, it stands a good chance of passing in Tennessee since three top officials and a very Christian majority serve in our legislature. Of course it will be challenged and may be struck down (as it has been it other states) but this is so encouraging to me in the face of the New York travesty.
but what would Cardinal Dolan’s role be in this situation, even if he were so inclined? Josephus Corvus says: 1 February 2019 at 10:24 AM
The Cardinal Archbishop is the Metropolitan and the Suffragen Sees are Albany, Brooklyn, Buffalo, Ogdensburg, Rochester, Rockville Centre and Syracuse. Dolan can indeed act. He simply chooses not to.
Can. 1408 Anyone can be brought to trial before the tribunal of domicile or quasi-domicile.
Governor Moloch.
The name could also apply to the Governors of Virginia and Rhode Island.
Well done Franklin Graham.
True, Protestants are working from incomplete Bibles, but a raised glass to those Protestants who are opposed to the Party of Death.
Archbishop John “Dagger John” Hughes of New York (mid-19th century, had armed Catholics guard the Cathedral against rioters, served as an envoy for Lincoln to Europe) would not be amused by this situation.
The word “ghoul” probably entered English from the Arabic “guul.” Guuls appear in the Koran and the One Thousand and One Nights. The word seems to go back to the dawn of civilization and the Sumerian “gallu.” Regardless, these foul creatures who feast on corpses acquired at some point in the folklore the ability to shape-shift, and present a pleasing appearance to lead travellers astray.
Such is the state of the Church today that we need Protestants to remind many of our Church leaders how to live out their faith.
To be fair, Cardinal Dolan has spoken up about this topic frequently.
Within the past 2 weeks he’s written editorials in the NY Post, given lengthy interviews on Fox News, and on his own radio show on Sirius, Catholic Channel.
anna 6: That is insufficient. Before this Cardinal Dolan attended the blasphemous Met Gala, next for New York could be assisted suicide. Cardinal Dolan would benefit from a little research on Dagger John and the Lion of Munster.
