23 Feb: Ordination with 1962 Pontifical in St. John Lateran

Let those suffering from hysteria over the Pope changing the Good Friday prayers in the older rite consider this.  This deals with the great Luigi De Magristris.  If there were ever a man to be made Cardinal, it would be he.

My emphases and comments:

Archbishop to ordain priests using Tridentine Mass in Rome cathedral

VATICAN CITY (CNS) — A former Vatican official will ordain four traditionalist priests in a Tridentine Mass celebrated in the cathedral of Rome, church officials said.  [Yes, the Vicarius would have had to approve this.  But do you think for a moment it didn’t require the Pope’s approval?  So, old Mass… ordination… in his cathedral church.]

The Feb. 23 ordination Mass in the Basilica of St. John Lateran will be the most prominent celebration of the old rite in Rome since Pope Benedict XVI relaxed restrictions on its use last year.  [Brick by brick, people.  What will be next?]

The Mass, to be celebrated by Archbishop Luigi De Magistris, will follow the 1962 Roman Missal, known commonly as the Tridentine rite. In July 2007 the pope issued new rules, saying the old rite could be used much more freely than before.

Those to be ordained are members of the Good Shepherd Institute, [ROFL!  The French bishops will love this.  REmember the kerfuffle about this group?  So much, therefore, as to say: "Get over it."] a society of apostolic life that uses only the Tridentine rite. The institute, based in France, is made up primarily of priests and seminarians who left the schismatic [CNS’s word, but I don’t think that represents the official position of the USCCB.] Society of St. Pius X and reconciled with the Vatican in 2006.

The Society of St. Pius X, founded by the late Archbishop Marcel Lefebvre, split with the Vatican years ago over liturgical and other issues.

In a statement, the Good Shepherd Institute expressed thanks to the pope and the Diocese of Rome.  [You can bet they did!]

"We wish to extend our heartfelt thanks to the ecclesiastical authorities who have graciously allowed the celebration of this Mass to take place in the extraordinary form and in the cathedral of the Holy Father," the statement said.

"The Institute of the Good Shepherd wishes to take this opportunity to demonstrate its devotion to and communion with the Holy Father and, though him, its communion with the whole church," it said.  [Gee… I’d like to celebrate my communion with Peter too.  How about another big Mass in St. Peter’s with Peter himself?]

Archbishop De Magistris is the retired head of the Apostolic Penitentiary, an office that deals with indulgences and matters of conscience. Last September, he celebrated a Mass of thanksgiving in Rome for the papal document that allowed wider use of the 1962 missal.

I used to talk with Mons. De Magistris often.  He is the one I sometimes call "the last Roman Catholic priest".

Now, if the same happened with Diocesan Priests… ;-p

  2. Paul(different) says:

Who is the Vicarius? I tried some years ago to do research on the temporal governance of the Holy See, but English-language resources on the subject are rare as hen’s teeth. (In all honesty I was attempting to research the political arrangements during the papacy of Bl. Pius IX, which may have made it slightly more difficult, but still.)

    Any reason?

Off topic, but I awarded you this… it’s a bit double edged because it’s a meme too, but you can ignore that if you want!

    Hope you’re having fun!

Too bad EWTN doesn’t pick this up!

Yes, this is wonderful news. Brick by brick, indeed.

    Paul (different):

The vicar of Rome is Cardinal Ruini. I believe he is the one meant by the term.

    This.

In the midst of their great joy I hope the members of the Institute of the Good Shepherd spare a thought of thanks to Archbishop Marcel Lefebvre, the only Bishop who for so many years ordained priests in the Traditional Rite and provided their training which was unavailable elsewhere.

How about the Holy Father offering Mass ad orientem at St. Patrick’s Cathedral in New York when he visits this April? Ordinary or Extraordinary Forms, either would be fine with me.

How about a show of hands for that?

I wouldn’t say, “split,” they are still together, but just needed a little time of separation and reflection. I think Rome has been reflecting, and will once again allow SSPX back into the fold, from which they were never really excluded.

Speaking of reflection, think about this: without SSPX, there would be no Summorum Pontifucum. Here are some of the reasons why SSPX continues (or continued) to be obstinate (from SSPX website):

“Pope John Paul II preached in a Lutheran church (December 11, 1983)

recited psalms with Jews while visiting the synagogue of Rome (April 13, 1986)

invited Catholics and Jews to prepare together for the coming of the Messiah (June 24, 1986)

engaged in dialogues with the high priests and witch doctors of Voodoo (February 4, 1993)

took part in Animist rites in the “Sacred Forest” in Togo (August 8, 1985)

had the sacred Tilac put on his forehead by a priestess of Shiva in Bombay (February 2, 1986)

and invited representatives of the “main religions” (about 130 came) to Assisi to pray for peace (October 27, 1986).”

This does not take into account the abuses from Paul VI (which I don’t have time to delve into here); suffice it to say, the main “abuse” from Paul VI was commissioning Archbishop Bugnini (a suspected Mason) to create a brand new mass, a thing that had never been done before in the history of the Church, and which has had devastating consequences for the entire Church–namely, the near universal disbelief in the Real Presence of Christ in the Eucharist. (Also, a traditional priest has said, Liturgical abuse leads to sexual abuse, a point I will not elaborate on here.)

So, in Archbishop Lefebvre’s mind, milieu 1980’s, he had no choice but to consecrate three Bishops. But make no mistake, SSPX has always considered itself within the fold, but felt there was a real emergency in the Church (which is historically supported).

Seeing as how it’s de Magistris’s birthday on that date as well, it seems the Holy Father has provided him with the perfect present.

I pray that the Institute of the Good Shepherd find a way to videotape this Mass. I, and I think it is safe to say many others who cannot attend, would love to see a traditional ordination Mass in St. John Lateran. Perhaps they could consult with the ICKSP, which had the ordinations in the Cathedral Basilica of St. Louis recorded.

How about Pope Benedict XVI ordaining priests in the extraordinary form?

  15. Allan says:

I have already emailed benedict XVI, requesting that he say mass in the extraordinaryhform, when he comes to the U.S.

It might be nice if many more did so, maybe we could be his stable group.
