A quick break on the way

Thirsty. Since I found a hot spot I thought I would post some local color.

Gee, I wonder how many pitted olives one gets for £1.99? The place looks warm and inviting!

You may be aware that tonight (in about two and a half hours) is the Last Night of the Proms, which is at Royal Albert Hall (within blocks of the Brompton Oratory). I did some searches to see if there were tickets available on the internet, but apparently not. I’ll be listening to it on MPR – a rollicking good time for classical music lovers and Angliophiles.

  3. TNCath says:

Is that The Crown in or near Covent Garden? I believe my lunch there (nothing special but very good) this summer cost me USD $26! What did you pint run?

  4. John Enright says:

I hope that the pitted olives come with martinis attached!

  5. Mike D: I am not sure, but I think they come wrapped in gold leaf (and without a marini).

  6. TNC: Yes, not too far. At Seven Dials. I found free wifi there for my phone.

  7. Supertradmom says:

I had a half-pint there once. I like the area as well and have had some mediocre ice-cream cones from a shop nearby. I love London…”He who tires of London, tires of life.”

The fellow with the graphics on the BACK side of the polo shirt? Why the lay version of ad orientem, of course!

    Cheers!

  9. John Enright says:

Ah. Without a martini, and olive is, well, a “pitied olive,” not a “pitted olive!” LOL!

Is it just me, or does everyone seem to be wearing blue in that pub? I know Chelsea were playing Man City today, any fans there?

I spent the day in London several years ago, most of it in a tour bus (The only time I’ve ever been to England). We were given about 3 hours on our own, and I (probably being the only member of the tour who is a native English speaker) didn’t waste it by hanging out at Buckingham Palace all day.

As I hurriedly strolled the see the sights, I stopped in a London pub for a pint of REAL ale. As it just so happens, it was The Crown. Small world…unfortunately I was about 10 years too soon to meet you there Fr. Z.

  12. Richard T says:

Father, if you have time whilst in London, and have not done so already, do visit St Etheldreda’s church. A 13th century episcopal chapel, lost after the Reformation but restored to the Faith in the 19th century. A beautiful, ancient building, plus one of the few places to see decent modern stained glass.

As an American, you may also be able to comment on the story that it was the model for the Catholic chapel at West Point.

As an added incentive, after you have visited, go down the narrow passage just by the church and hidden away in a courtyard you will find the Mitre Tavern – one of the best pubs in London.
