Cardinal Vingt-Trois of Paris has said that the press reaction to the Holy Father’s comments on AIDS and condoms in Africa is really pay back for the success he had in France.

About this blog…
“This blog is like a fusion of the Baroque ‘salon’ with its well-tuned harpsichord around which polite society gathered for entertainment and edification and, on the other hand, a Wild West “saloon” with its out-of-tune piano and swinging doors, where everyone has a gun and something to say. Nevertheless, we try to point our discussions back to what it is to be Catholic in this increasingly difficult age, to love God, and how to get to heaven.” – Fr. Z

- The most evident mark of God’s anger and the most terrible castigation He can inflict upon the world are manifested when He permits His people to fall into the hands of clerics who are priests more in name than in deed, priests who practice the cruelty of ravening wolves rather than the charity and affection of devoted shepherds.

“Until the Lord be pleased to settle, through the instrumentality of the princes of the Church and the lawful ministers of His justice, the trouble aroused by the pride of a few and the ignorance of some others, let us with the help of God endeavor with calm and humble patience to render love for hatred, to avoid disputes with the silly, to keep to the truth and not fight with the weapons of falsehood, and to beg of God at all times that in all our thoughts and desires, in all our words and actions, He may hold the first place who calls Himself the origin of all things.”

Don’t rely on popes, bishops and priests.
“He [Satan] will set up a counter-Church which will be the ape of the Church because, he the devil, is the ape of God. It will have all the notes and characteristics of the Church, but in reverse and emptied of its divine content. It will be a mystical body of the anti-Christ that will in all externals resemble the mystical body of Christ. In desperate need for God, whom he nevertheless refuses to adore, modern man in his loneliness and frustration will hunger more and more for membership in a community that will give him enlargement of purpose, but at the cost of losing himself in some vague collectivity.”
“Who is going to save our Church? Not our bishops, not our priests and religious. It is up to you, the people. You have the minds, the eyes, and the ears to save the Church. Your mission is to see that your priests act like priests, your bishops act like bishops.”- Fulton Sheen

"But if, in any layman who is indeed imbued with literature, ignorance of the Latin language, which we can truly call the 'catholic' language, indicates a certain sluggishness in his love toward the Church, how much more fitting it is that each and every cleric should be adequately practiced and skilled in that language!" - Pius XI
"Let us realize that this remark of Cicero (Brutus 37, 140) can be in a certain way referred to [young lay people]: 'It is not so much a matter of distinction to know Latin as it is disgraceful not to know it.'" - St. John Paul II

Grant unto thy Church, we beseech Thee, O merciful God, that She, being gathered together by the Holy Ghost, may be in no wise troubled by attack from her foes. O God, who by sin art offended and by penance pacified, mercifully regard the prayers of Thy people making supplication unto Thee, and turn away the scourges of Thine anger which we deserve for our sins. Almighty and Everlasting God, in whose Hand are the power and the government of every realm: look down upon and help the Christian people that the heathen nations who trust in the fierceness of their own might may be crushed by the power of thine Arm. Through our Lord Jesus Christ, Thy Son, who liveth and reigneth with Thee in the unity of the Holy Ghost, God, world without end. R. Amen.

That’s like banks saying that bank robbers should keep their tires well inflated for the sake of safety and good gas mileage.
Metaphorical pygmies.
But see what real pygmies did to show their love for the Holy Father. They travelled to the apostolic nunciature in Yaounde where Benedict was staying, built a grass hut in its grounds and gave him the gift of a turtle. It’s a pygmie sign of respect, apparently.
Metaphorical pygmies.

If you’re referring to me, I would point out that I used a simile not a metaphor.
Good for you, RBrown! LOL!
No, I was referring to the critics of the pope mentioned in Father’s post. Now, however…
How Cardinal 23’s attitude contrasts with the FSSP French District, who issued a statement valiantly defending the Pope against his attackers. [Perhaps you didn’t smoke that the Cardinal was defending the Pope.]
A turtle. How delightful! I’m rather fond of turtles. Who isn’t?
The Church is like the noble turtle – a little slow perhaps, but a sure bet for eventual victory!
Sorry father, didn’t actually read the article, just (mis)interpreted it from your statement.
I disagree with the opinion that because the French faithful gave a great welcome to our Pope, the media is more after him. They are ALWAYS after him/
It is forgetting that when pope JPII came in France, people were asking to annull their baptism!!! ( that shows the degree of catechism in my country!!!). They made a big fuss about pope JPII coming to prayer on Doc. lejeune tomb. I remember banners promoting condoms, so as we say in france, “ce n’est pas d’hier.”
The media are like in the US, they show an anti catholicism rampant!
That cardinal Vingt Trois seek to understand the hatred against the pope, I can understand. To me he is barking at the wrong tree. The communists are in the street Sunday afternoon to sell condoms. It is the result of poor catechism, and anti catholicism militant. The French clerge is not up to the job.
I know I was taught that the Pope is in Rome out of touch, we have to apply his general teaching to our daily life ( meaning…you can pick and choose) by the way I was not taught about venial and mortal sin…
I still didn’t hear one french Bishop defending the teaching of the pope. Except FSSP and the Vendee politician De Villiers who quallified Juppe, kroutchner and the others of “obsedes de la capote”.
we even have the “priest of the Gang” (le pretre des loubards): Guy Gilbert who said “when my guys are f**** like beavers I have to give them condoms!!!!” yes, on TV Figaro.
France what have you done of your baptism!!!!
“I’m rather fond of turtles. Who isn’t?”
I’m not. They look slimey and evil.
Rorate Caeli reports (http://rorate-caeli.blogspot.com/2009/03/43-of-french-catholics-wish-to-see.html) that many French Catholics are very much against this Pope and what he stands for and want liberalisation of abortion etc. The sample, though, is small (600+).
“According to an Ifop poll for the Journal du Dimanche, 43% percent of French Catholics desire the departure of Pope Benedict XVI who has been widely criticized after his recent statements about condoms. If 54% want him to remain in the Vatican, 83% of the Catholics of France believe that the Church must change its discourse and its positions on abortion to reflect changes in society. According to the survey which is to be published on Sunday, they also want the Church to change its discourse and its positions on homosexuality (69%), remarriage for the divorced (77%), and contraception (85%).
The survey was conducted from March 19 to 20 among a sample of 620 Catholics representative of the French population aged 18 and over, following the remarks of the pope.”
No wonder they have barely 4% practising Catholics. France is utterly divided between outstanding traditional Catholics – wonderful institutions such as the Benedictines at Fontgombault, Le Barroux etc – and rank modernists and a dreadful hierarchy since the 70s who have all but succeeded in destroying the Church.
Here you can see the communist of Act up on the ground yelling “le pope it is the forbidden, the condom is life” ( that’s what I could make up)protected by the police in front of Notre Dame de Paris, then you see and hear the French youth having more guts than most, singing to our Lady, they wear a hand that says” don’t touch my Pope” ( it is after a campaign against racism in france “touche pas a mon pote” “Don’t touch my buddy”
http://www.fdesouche.com/articles/31504
The youth singing are the hope of France.
