Here is some interesting news from Catholic News Service:
No Deal: Pro-Life Democrat Still Vowing to Kill Health Care Bill
Thursday, November 05, 2009

Rep. Bart Stupak (D-Mich.), co-chairman of the House Pro-Life Caucus.
(CNSNews.com) – Rep. Bart Stupak (D-Mich.) told CNSNews.com on Thursday he has not reached an agreement with House Speaker Nancy Pelosi, [the pro-abortion Catholic Nancy Pelosi] and therefore he and dozens of pro-life Democrats are still poised to kill the House health care bill.
Stupak has organized a group of about 40 Democrats who are committed to killing the health care bill if [pro-abortion Catholic] Pelosi (D.-Calif.) does not allow them a straight up-or-down vote on an amendment that would prohibit federal dollars from paying for any part of any health insurance plan that covers abortions.
Stupak and his approximately 40 allies plan to vote against the special "rule" that would govern the terms of the House floor debate on the health care bill. If this rule does not win a majority vote, the House cannot proceed to consideration of the bill itself.
Stupak has said he believes he has enough votes to defeat the rule if [pro-abortion Catholic] Speaker Pelosi does not relent. The vote on the rule is likey to occur late Friday afternoon or Friday evening.
“I will continue to oppose, and will continue whipping my colleagues to oppose, bringing the bill to the floor for a vote until there is satisfactory language to prevent public funding for abortion,” Stupak told CNSNews.com in a statement on Thursday.
A senior aide in Stupak’s office told CNSNews.com, “Right now, the group of those pro-life Dems are holding together pretty well. The coalition is standing strong behind Congressman Stupak.” The group is committed to killing the bill if the Stupak amendment is not allowed a vote, the aide said.
Read the rest there.
In the meantime, also on CNS we read:
Sen. Bob Casey Jr. (D-Pa.) said he supports an amendment to the health care bill that would prohibit federal funds from paying for abortions through the bill, but he also said he is not drawing any "lines in the sand” on the issue.
It is good to know who is who.
I have a passionate dislike for the junior senator from my state. I miss Bishop Martino.
I should add that I likewise have a dislike for the senior senator from PA as well.
I never thought I’d say this, but I am glad there are pro-lifers in the Dem party, b/c without them, this evil bill would pass.
God bless Catholic family man Bart Stupak, a profile in courage, a hero for human life! He needs continued prayers to stand firm for life in the face of temptations from Auntie Screwtape and Co.
Nancy’s soul is in great need of prayer. She’s going headlong into evil.
FYI: These links are to Cybercast News Service, created by Brent Bozell, not Catholic News Service. It’s very easy to confuse them….Didn’t the USCCB have some sort of legal battle with this group over the “CNS” initials?
At the time of Speaker Pelosi’s visit with the Holy Father there was much speculation as to what he said to her. When pressed, by a Fox newsman, as to what the Pope had said to her specifically about abortion she replied, “He shared his point of view.” The Fox newsman was trailing her from one meeting to the next and it seemed an unguarded remark. I’ve thought it strange that no one has picked up on that.
I can only pray for Stupak and his pro-life colleagues. Nancy Pelosi will surely tempt, target and terrorize them. Obamacare is the dream of the Culture of Death — the fulfillment of the kingdom of the left. Life, liberty and the pursuit of happiness be damned.
I can’t help but think of Horatius at the bridge.
Queen Pelosi the Proud?
Can we ask her to send back her baptismal certificate?
You know Father Z if her Bishop had the guts to do his job and excommunicate her publicly you could use the red ink to say pro abortion former catholic. The Pope “shared his point of view”??? To arrogant leftists like Pelosi there are no absolutes just opinions and points of view. Unfortunately due to the lack of teaching by U S Church leaders over the past 40 years there are many Pelosi’s out there who share the same misconception that there is no true teaching and that its all just a matter of opinion.
And did we forget to mention that she’s a (pro-abortion) CATHOLIC? The bad example (pro-abortion) Catholics set for the rest of the world is truly a fast track to nowhere good. There are a lot of folks who need prayers for conversion. Never forget to do that.
Pray for these pro-life democrats. Pray that they be strengthened against the attacks that are surely being hurled at them as we read this. Pray, and pray again.
Sorry, but Stupak is caught on video at a townhall saying that the bill covers abortion and that he is voting for it. Just smoke and mirrors just like the Ellsworth “amendment”.
GW1962: Can you provide a link?
I found this article from this evening saying that Stupak awaits the USCCB’s opinion on the language first:
I certainly hope he and the USCCB do not cave, but we shall see. Also, what about consciences? The USCCB mentioned that as well.
DisturbedMary: I imagine it’s out of frustration with a pro-abortion politician, but asking someone to “send back” a baptismal certificate does not seem very prudent. It may give the wrongful implication that somehow the baptism is no longer valid, which is contrary to Tradition, even if it’s only meant to be symbolic.
GeoffsWife: I’m sorry to hear that. The nice thing about the internet is that there’s a lot more people vigilant for such things, and it’ll be difficult to “sneak” it past everyone.
The USCCB has not “caved”. The letter insert should be in the bulletins at tomorrow’s Sunday and Sunday Masses, plus a note which is supposed to be read by the priest in every parish. It looks at this time that the vote will be delayed until Sunday, which gives the Bishops’ letter time to sink into the consciences of every pro-abortion Catholic on the Hill. Pray. We let Roe v. Wade happen. We cannot let this happen.
Regarding the refusal to acknowledge absolutes on the part of the Speaker, and how appeals to absolutes will not sway her —
maybe if we pointed out that those were future taxpayers?
St. Michael pray for us — especially her!
PRO LIFE DEMS NOW WHAT ARE THOSE? I NEVER HEARD OF THEM BEFORE., OH WAIT ONE OF MY SENATORS ( CASEY )FATHER WAS THE ONLY ONE WHO TRIED TOO MAKE A SPEECH BUT THEY WOULD NOT LET HIM AT THEIR PARTY OF DEATH CONVENTION. [Please DON’T SHOUT on my blog!]
