Thanks to readers and Penjing Report

TwitterWhen I receive donations through the donation button on the sidebar or on some posts (especially bird related posts), I always write back an email with a note of thanks.   However, lately some of my e-mails are getting kicked back to me as undeliverable.   If you sent a donation and did not hear from me, that is why.

Also, I am deeply grateful to readers who used my amazon wishlist to send items.

Since I am on the road a lot, I thank CQ of WI who sent a couple retractable charge chords.  I hate hauling cords and wires around and this will make things easier.

TS of AL sent a copy of astronaut Jim Lovell’s about about Apollo 13.  I will try somehow to get it autographed.  The Apollo 13 mission still amazes me, 40 years later.

Deep gratitude to JR who sent the riveting page turner Handbook of Literary Rhetoric by Heinrich Lausberg, a book I need for my thesis.  Thank you!

I also received from FW remastered DVDs of what is arguably one of the best TV series ever broadcast, I, Claudius. BTW… did you know that a younger Captain Picard is in this?

PENJING REPORT

I regret to inform you that Penjing is… not well at all.  For weeks this tree has been struggling.

It lost all its leaves and now, it has repeatedly put out new leaves only to lose them again. And the leaves just don’t look good.  They are a lime color instead of that dark green of yore.

Not good.  The other trees are fine.

It also stars Derek Jacoby, who played a Very Important Character in the episode “Utopia’ during Season 3 of Dr Who…

I’m a Whovian, and proud of it.

Not to mention the great performance of Derek Jacobi as brother Cadfael in the detective series of the same name. I remember watching I, Claudius, Star trek TNG and Cadfael pretty much on the same day many years ago – with 1,000 and 2,300 years between the roles it was all great fun. (though “I, Claudius” is not exactly fare for those too young).

    Enjoy, Fr.!

  3. Poor Penjing.

St. Fiacre, patron saint of gardeners, pray for us!

So sorry to hear about Penjing…

I echo Suburbanbanshee’s prayer: St. Fiacre, pray for us!

I, Claudius is a great series although younger people seeing it for the first time may be taken aback by the production values, which are frankly cheesy (Augustus acknowledging the cheering throng at the Colosseum, only the camera’s on him and the cheers are obviously canned). But the writing and direction are outstanding and the acting is out of this world; you couldn’t put a cast like that together today. I’m curious to see the remastered version. The older DVD release left something to be desired.

Maybe too much water for Penjing? Looks like you have it sitting in a tub of water. He may not like having wet feet. Also could be a fungal problem stemming from that.
