Buona Pasqua! I attended a wonderful NO Mass in Latin this morning at my parish. The weather is fantastic, a glorious start to Easter Sunday, considering we are due for rain later on this afternoon.
For those of you who did not see the Urbi et Orbi live earlier this morning, it is posted on YouTube and on the Vatican CTV site. Stylistically it is light years behind what we have seen in the past under Benedict and John Paul II. No mozzetta, no liturgical vestments and mitre (like Benedict), no throne, no multi-lingual Easter greetings, nary a smile on the Holy Father’s face, reading his address from a wooden lectern that partially obscured his face, donning a stole for the blessing and taking it off like he was afraid of contagion. Now go to YouTube and watch Benedict’s from Easter 2012. That man looked, acted and spoke like a Pope. All our concerns in regard to the ceremonial of Francis’ pontificate can be summed up in three words: low, low, low.
I know I will be castigated for throwing cold water on such a joyous day, but I honestly cannot warm up to this man, I feel no connection, see no warmth or humility in him which the press keeps trumpeting incessantly. My wife–who did some acting in her earlier years–said Francis projects no “presence,” that he is very tentative and nervous in front of crowds, but that he looks at ease one-to-one or in small groups, like when he was greeting Rome’s civil officials before the Via Crucis.
A priest friend told me that we have the consolation to have lived under two great pontificates, that of John Paul II and Benedict XVI, that throughout history the great majority of Popes have been, in fact, quite ordinary and rarely exceptional. We have been spoiled these last 33 or so years!

We had a very beautiful mass this morning with a talented brass ensemble to accompany the always great choir, and it was packed as usual!
We found out that our beloved monsignor passed away last night. He was in his 90’s I believe, and only gave up helping with mass and doing confessions a few months ago. We were blessed to have him as the one stable presence in our parish as we dealt with priests coming and going, scandal, and a merger. He will be missed, but I can’t think of a better time to go to Heaven.
Congratulations to all of the new Catholics, and those who celebrated the anniversary of their conversion last night–you are an inspiration.
And, finally, thank you Father Z for this blog. You (and my fellow commenters) help keep my faith on my mind and give me a lot to think about.

No, but I think I will just attend Mass in my parish and go about my life paying little attention to what happens in the glorious reign of “Francis the Humble.” Now trying stop my friend in the Vatican from texting me every bit of curial gossip is another story, but ignoring it will probably be best for my sanity and soul.
Remember for our Orthodox brethren that May 5th will be Easter for them. Don’t forget to wish them a Buona Pasqua next month!

— Our Bp. Paprocki gave the Apostolic Blessing with plenary indulgence at Mass this morning… kind of a nice surprise (and me and DD went to confession exactly 8 days ago so we’re good :-)
— For Lent I gave up putting cream/milk in my coffee. (Thought about giving up coffee completely but decided that would be too drastic. ) I never used to be able to stand black coffee and this “give up,” tiny though it was, was a bit difficult at first . Well, this morning I had two cups of coffee with special flavored creamer set aside for the occassion… and found I actually kinda prefer my coffee black now that I’ve gotten used to it. Of course, I guess your Lenten sacrifice/penance should ideally become a habit, to the point where you keep doing it even after Lent is over because it no longer seems like a penance to you. Has anyone else experienced this?

Bookworm: Nope, haha, that didn’t work for me. I gave up having my morning coffee in bed. We have to start our day at three AM because of my husband’s work, and I’d fallen into that bad habit, lounging around drinking a pot of coffee and checking out the blogs on my laptop- especially this one. So I gave up, not coffee, but coffee in bed and I stuck to it, praise Jesus! Every morning I trudged dutifully to the kitchen table to drink my coffee. However, this morning found me once more lounging among my pillows with my cup and my laptop, delighting in my coffee in bed. :)

Happy Easter! Christ is risen indeed, alleluia! I was too recieved into the Catholic church during the Easter Vigil and recieved the Sacraments of Confirmation & Holy Communion (having been baptized about 10 years ago in my former Protestant church.) I’m ecstatic, feels like I’m walking on air :)
P.S. To anyone else living in NYC — Holy Innocents church (37th St, just west of Broadway) is celebrating sung Masses (missa cantata) in the Extraordinary Form every day during the Octave of Easter (this week) at 6PM — usually they are Low Masses in the evening (or some days sung?) but every day this week will be a sung Mass. Perhaps Father Z would like to share this with his readers too as I recall he has done with services there in the past.

Your coming into the Church helps to strengthen our faith, in a way I can’t put into words easily. It always gives a frisson of great joy when an adult converts to the catholic faith. My husband became a Catholic two years after we married and when I think of his reception mass I still feel excited even after nearly twenty years.

The Chicken
Happy Easter! For our first Easter as a married couple, we lit our home paschal candle with the fire from the Easter Vigil and had a sumptuous feast surrounded by our family in our new home. Mass was glorious–candlelight until the Gloria, Mozart Mass in B Flat Major for the ordinary and various instrumental interludes throughout. A truly beautiful Easter, indeed.
